Knockoff smartphones, designer clothing, and luxury handbags are only part of the counterfeit business. In recent years, mainland China's copycat profiteers moved into the business of counterfeiting ENTIRE shops and brand identities! In 2011, a fake Apple store popped up in the southwestern city of Kunming. It looked so authentic, some employees even thought it was real! In 2015, the police shut down a fake bank in the eastern city of Nanjing, where depositors reportedly lost nearly $33 million dollars. The fake bank looked exactly like a real one complete with security guards, computers, ATMs. In 2014, Hong Kong restaurateur Yenn Wong got a surprise one morning. The co-founder of popular Hong Kong restaurant Chachawan Isaan Thai and Bar woke up and found a second Chachawan restaurant in Shanghai that completely copied her restaurant! Chachawan's Facebook page was filled with enthusiastic inquiries asking if the shop had opened a new branch in Shanghai. The Shanghai Chachawan had the same exterior look and feel as the Hong Kong shop, and even the menu, focusing on northeastern Thai, or Isaan cuisine, looked the exact same. As it turned out, the owners of the fake Chachawan expressed interest in taking the concept to the mainland but their idea was refused. But that didn’t discourage them in the slightest! 9 - Panda Panda Panda Panda Panda diplomacy is China's use of giant pandas as diplomatic gifts to other countries. The practice existed as far back as the Tang Dynasty when Empress Wu Zetian sent a pair of pandas to the Japanese emperor. BUT the panda diplomacy comes with a twist. Actually, China is the owner of all the pandas in the world – even if they give it away as a gift! Well, almost. But I’ll get to that in a minute. In fact, if you happen to see a panda outside the country, that’s because it’s on loan! China even owns all future offspring of all pandas! Over the past 15 years, every time China has sent a panda to a foreign zoo, they’ve required an agreement with the receiving country. According to the contract, the pandas belong to China and so do any of their offspring. If there are any offspring, they must be returned to China before they turn four years old. The contract also expressly forbids panda cloning research! However, there are two pandas which are owned by Mexico; Xin Xin and Shuan Shuan. This was before China implemented the “I own all the pandas” policy. But, Mexico has agreed that if these pandas have any offspring, they will belong to China. You know what. I’m adopting this policy for all the gifts I give!!!! 8 - Cave dwellers Did you know, there are currently 30 million people in China who live in caves?! That’s the equivalent to the entire populations of Australia and New Zealand combined! The craziest part? Most of those 30 million people LOVE their living arrangements – the majority of these caves are bigger, nicer, and quieter than a lot of Beijing’s apartments! The majority of China’s cave dwellers live in Shaanxi province, where the porous soil and limestone cliffs make for easy excavation. Most have electricity, many have plumbing, and some come with multiple rooms and a lawn too! More importantly, in a country where people still earn low wages, you can rent a big cave for about $30 a month or in some cases, you can just make your own and live completely for free. The earth that surrounds the indoor space serves as an effective insulator keeping the inside of the structure warm in cold seasons and cool in hot seasons. Very little heating is required during the winter, and during the summer, these caves are supposedly as cool as an air-conditioned room. In the last decade, these cave dwellings have been brought to the attention of scientists and researchers and have been regarded as an example of sustainable design. Hey, I can’t say it’s a bad thing.

The World's First Paper Money was created in China over a thousand years ago. The idea of using a durable light-weight substance as evidence of a promise to pay a bearer on demand, originated in China during the Han Dynasty in 118 BC, and was made of leather. The first known banknotes were then developed in China during the Tang and Song dynasties, starting in the 7th century. 2. Despite China spanning five geographical time zones, the time in China follows a single standard time offset, which is eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. The official national standard time is called Beijing Time domestically and China Standard Time (CST) internationally. Because China merged these 5 time zones the sun rises as late as 10am in some places in China. 3. The Lotus Bridge, located about 8 km west of the Macau International Airport, connects mainland china with Macau. The bridge has an unusual arrangement as drivers in China drive on the right side of the road, where as in Macau they drive on the left side. 4. 1 in every 3 socks you have, were made in the district of Datang in Zhuji, China, now known as "Sock City". 5. Over 30,000,000 people in China live in cave homes, called yaodongs; because they are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Many of the cave dwellers find caves more desirable than concrete homes in the city. 6. Prior to June 30th 2014, it was a requirement that all cosmetic products sold domestically be animal tested. However a law was passed on June 30th 2014 removing the requirement for domestically used cosmetic products to be animal tested. Don't get this confused with banning animal testing. China made it a requirement that cosmetic products be animal tested and just removed that requirement, so animal testing is perfectly legal. 7. The first Internet Addiction Centre in China was established in 2004. China takes Internet Addiction very seriously and has classified it as a disease since 2008. There are now hundreds of these rehabilitation camps around China. These addiction centres are generally military run bootcamps that keep the teenagers far away from computers. 8. Dyeing pets to look like other wild animals has been a trend in China since the 2000's. 9. China has strict sentencing laws for white-collar crimes that many other countries take lightly, like fraud, corruption, or illegal fund raising. China has executed several white-collar criminals ranging from government officials to small business owners and even CEO's of large firms. 10. China is by far the least religious country in the world. In a recent poll, 61% of Chinese people claim to be convinced atheists, approximately twice as many as any other country in the world. A further 29% say that they are not religious and only just 7% of the population say they are religious. This is in large part due to the decades of Communist rule, which has instilled a widespread atheistic materialism that still surprises many visitors. ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ If you enjoyed the China facts in this episode of "10 Fun Facts About China" please do share this with your friends by clicking the share button below. This top 10 brought to you by Zero2Hero!! Don't forget to subscribe here! https://goo.gl/NXuChu Click here to see the Top 10 AMAZING Stories of Survival! https://youtu.be/i5VC-YOVlyI Number 10: Great Wall of China. We’ll start the video with one of the most well known features from China’s vast history; the Great Wall China is one of the great wonders of the world. As far as defensive fortifications go, you don’t get much more impressive than this. Stone, brick, earth and other materials make up this incredibly long wall. Construction began on the wall over 2000 years ago and was added to by consecutive generations, and it is estimated that millions of people worked to build the Great wall over 1000 years. With so much wall stretched over such vast distances, it’s no surprise we are still find sections we didn’t even know about. In 2009, 180km of previously unknown sections were discovered. If you travel along the wall you would see it in various different conditions, from overgrown vegetation on forgotten sections, crumbling brick or complete sections destroyed, to the preserved and renovated areas nearest to tourist centers. Can it be seen from space? Well, I hate to disappoint you, but it can’t. Although NASA has said it can be seen with the naked eye from low Earth orbit, which is about 100 miles up, some continue to debate this. Number 9: Rice. The ancient Chinese agricultural way of life, which was centered heavily on rice, played an important role in the history and development of the country. For thousands of years, Chinese farmers diligently cultivated their land, and due to the production requirements of cultivating race, they developed irrigation techniques to help improve cultivation. By cultivating rice and increasing their agricultural way of life, they consequently developed social, economic, political and ideological developments that were closely linked and influenced by rice cultivation. In some parts of China, they have also combined rice cultivation with raising fish in a rice-fish aquaculture system, a practice that is still widely practiced today. This sustainable and innovative choice ensures that the rice protects the fish from the sun, and, in turn, fish eat the weeds that would cause harm to rice, as well as fertilizing the crop! Number 8: Foot Binding. Chinese foot binding was a practice that Chinese women took part in, and we don’t exactly know when and why it started. Some historians have dated its beginning to sometime during the 10th century, but no one knows for sure who started or why. However it was highly likely that it was the male perception of beauty that helped sustain the practice. The process worked by very slowly forcing the form of the foot into a strange crescent shape over the course of decades, and began when female children were young, and their bones were still soft. First the feet were submerged in hot water and then the four smaller toes were tightly wrapped in cotton bandages, nestling them under the rest the foot, angling it to create a sort of half-moon shape. After that, they had to rinse, wrap and repeat it for the rest of your life, every time making that little bit tighter. If the feet were not cared for, like cutting the toe nails, it could result in swollen, pus filled areas that created a horrible odor. In the worst cases whole toes might fall off, and that wasn’t the end of the effects on the body. Women would regularly suffer from severe headaches, poor circulation, and extreme hip discomfort. Thankfully this practice was stopped about three generations ago! Number 7: Chop Sticks. Today chopsticks are the norm of any Japanese or Chinese restaurant, and many of us still struggle to work out how to use them. As far as utensils go, these aren’t the easiest ones to use, but that is likely a view impacted by western traditions. Nevertheless, it is something you can learn easily enough with practice, and once you do, there will be no going back. They are commonly made of bamboo, plastic, wood or stainless steel, but they have also been made from porcelain, jade, ivory, silver and even gold and titanium. They were first used over 200 years ago in the ancient Han Chinese or the Zhou Dynasty, and later spread to other surrounding countries. Today you’ll find them used in Cambodia, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Vietnams, in various styles and materials.

While the United States is turning to protectionism, across the Pacific, China is doing just the opposite. The Chinese government has been heeding a call from consumers, for more quality choices in their daily lives. It has been steadily reducing import tariffs on its own initiative in the last few decades, and especially following the country's accession to the WTO in 2001. Just recently, China announced a reduction in import duties on more than 1,000 different types of goods, effective from July 1, 2018. The list covers a wide range of consumer products, from washing machines to refrigerators, from shoes to cosmetics.
