What do you know about ur planet? Many things seem to have existed forever, and certain well-known people are associated with a specific period of time. But have you ever really sat down and considered the relationship between different events in correlation with each other? You’d be surprised how your perception of time really fools you! By the way, we’ve hidden 3 tiny light bulbs in this video. Can you find them all? If you’re the first one to find them and write the time they appear in the comments, you will get a mention from us in one of our next videos! Good luck, and let’s begin! TIMESTAMPS When the first Star Wars was released, the guillotine was still being used in France. 1:02 People born at the same moment can celebrate their birthdays on different days. 1:46 Martin Luther King Jr., Anne Frank, and Christopher Plummer were all born in the same year. 3:15 Cleopatra lived closer to the founding of McDonalds than to the building of the Great Pyramids. 4:14 Some of the whales that lived when Moby-Dick was written are still alive today. 4:58 A plane from New Zealand traveled in time. 5:40 The grandchildren of US President John Tyler, who was born in the 18th century, are still alive. 6:22 Warner Bros. Studios appeared when the Ottoman Empire still existed. 7:18 Throughout the life of Queen Elizabeth II, there have been 16 different US presidents. 8:22 Tiffany & Co. jewelry company is older than Italy. 8:44 If you could fit the entire history of Earth into 1 year, humans would appear at 11:35PM on December 31. 9:59 We are now closer to 2033 than 2000. 12:24 SUMMARY - The first Star Wars movie was released on May 25, 1977. After that, France officially abolished the use of the guillotine along with the death penalty 1981! - For example, it's still morning in the US but already the next day in Australia. Anyone who has flown westward over long distances especially gets what we’re saying. You’re travelling for hours and hours but, according to the local time, you arrive to your destination earlier than when you had left! - The famous American preacher and 1960’s civil rights leader was born in the same year as Anne Frank, a brave little Jewish teenager. - By the time Cleopatra was born in 69 B.C., the Great Pyramid of Giza had already been around for 2,471 years! - Herman Melville wrote Moby-Dick in 1851. In his book, the author described a gigantic white whale infamous for its huge size and the destruction it caused to ships. And while such whales have a lifespan of about 50-60 years, the Bowhead whale can live for as long as 200 years and more! - What happened was a Hawaiian plane took off from Auckland at 12:05AM on January 1, 2018. The passengers on the plane were happy to celebrate the New Year a second time because the plane landed in Honolulu at 10:16AM local time on December 31, 2017. - John Tyler was born in 1790; that’s over 200 years ago! Yet 2 of his grandchildren, Lyon Gardiner Tyler Junior and Harisson Raffin Tyler, are still alive. Yes, grandchildren! - In 1903 the Warner brothers opened their first movie theater called the Cascade. Their parents were originally from the Russian Empire, and out of 12 children in the family, it was actually just Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack that started the famous company. - Elizabeth II was born in 1926 when Calvin Coolidge was President of the US. Since then, there have been 15 successors. - The Italy we know today, aka the Italian Republic, was established in 1861, and Charles Lewis Tiffany and John Young opened their first store on Broadway in 1837. But you probably wouldn’t have recognized the company in its early years. - Let's imagine the Earth’s 4.54 billion-year history is squished into one calendar year. If you crunch the numbers, you’ll see that 1 second would equal 144 years! - When you hear "10 years ago," you still think of the '90s, not the 2000s, don't you? Isn’t it crazy how so many people are guilty of this? Well, here’s a friendly reminder: it’s been 18 years since the year 2000 (and 28 since 1990!) How to Broaden Your Horizons. In case you think you know everything about our planet and us humans, here’s a surprise for you: the world is so interesting and complicated that you can always learn more about it to get smarter and impress your friends. Pay attention to these 15 amazing shocking facts that’ll completely change the way you see the world. Acne slows down aging 0:54 Researchers at King’s College London found that the cells of people who had acne in their youth have better built-in protection against aging. It all comes down to things called telomeres. They’re like tiny caps on the ends of chromosomes that protect your DNA from damage. Basically, the longer the telomeres, the slower your cells age. In the study, the researchers measured the telomeres in over 1200 twins and found that those who’d had acne growing up had longer telomeres than those who didn’t have to deal with pimples. Breast milk can change its composition 3:32 A mother’s milk can change its composition if her baby is sick. Researchers at Harvard University have noticed that when a breastfeeding infant is ill, it transmits a signal to its mother’s body through its saliva. Once mom’s body gets this SOS, it produces more antibodies and transmits them to the baby through the breast milk. A thick beard is a sign of future baldness 4:06 The thicker a man’s beard and the faster it grows, the more likely he is to suffer from baldness later on in life. As strange and scary as it might sound, it was actually proven by French scientists at the University of Lyon. The reason why men go bald is that the lack of hair on the head helps compensate for the heat created by a growing beard; thus, the optimal body heat balance is maintained. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Acne slows down aging 0:54 Babies cry with an accent 1:41 Cockroaches can bite 2:31 Cats have an internal compass 3:07 Breast milk can change its composition 3:32 A thick beard is a sign of future baldness 4:06 The "Cholesterol-free" label on vegetable oil is merely a marketing ploy 4:47 Men also have PMS 5:30 There is such a thing as “joke addiction” 6:15 Watermelon snow is a real thing 7:22 Only 22% of people can wiggle their ears 8:03 People who constantly complain live longer 8:45 Red cabbage can change color in different kinds of water 9:33 An hourglass figure speaks of high intelligence 10:03 Lovers hearts beat in sync 10:57 SUMMARY -The cells of people who had acne in their youth have better built-in protection against aging. -German scientists have found that infants cry with an intonation similar to that of their mother’s speech. -Cockroach bites can cause irritation, swelling, and sometimes even lesions. -Cat’s brain cells are sensitive to the Earth’s magnetic field, giving them a sort of internal compass. -A mother’s milk can change its composition if her baby is sick. -The thicker a man’s beard and the faster it grows, the more likely he is to suffer from baldness later on in life. -“Cholesterol-free” oil has tons of polyunsaturated fats and getting too much of those can throw the balance of healthy natural fats in your body all out of whack. -Men experience a similar syndrome called IMS, or Irritable Male Syndrome to be more precise. -Sometimes when a person suffers from some traumatic brain injury, they’ll have an abnormally hyped-up sense of humor after their recovery. -The Sierra Nevada in California is hiding something really special in the summer time: pink watermelon snow. -Only 22% of the world’s population can move each of their ears one by one, and a mere 18% can wiggle both ears at the same time. -Pessimists relieve themselves of stress when they let their negative feelings out and thus live longer. -The color of red cabbage can change depending on the water it’s being cooked in due to the fact that water pH levels differ. -Curvy women in particular develop more omega-3 fatty acids and store them on their hips which contributes to a more active development of the brain. -When a man is in love, his heart beats in the same rhythm as the heart of his partner. Let's find out whether such astounding progress is good and if this “science of the future” can actually come back and bite us later. Did you know that there's a strong chance of a remote control for the body and brain being invented? With each passing day, science continues to move forward. It keeps expanding the boundaries of human capabilities to such an extent, that it seems like it's just a matter of time until we see something we could've imagined only in the boldest sci-fi flicks! TIMESTAMPS Transplantation of a human head 1:16 Selective amnesia 2:14 Water on Mars 2:58 A child from three parents 3:50 Organs grown in a lab 4:39 “Plastic” diseases 5:33 Nanorobots inside people 6:24 There are one billion planets that look like the Earth 7:20 3-D bioprinter that can print human skin 8:10 Bacteria evolving faster than we find cures for them 9:03 Mysterious Universe 9:56 Remote control for the brain 10:42 SUMMARY - Sergio Canavero, a neurosurgeon from Italy, is planning to take on a divine endeavor – bringing people back from the dead! The Italian scientist is sure that successful transplantation of a human head is a fairly realistic possibility. - Would you like to get rid of all your phobias, worries, bad memories and fears? Well, lucky for you, scientists are now ready to do just that and rid your brain of all the negative thoughts and flashbacks without affecting the important parts of your life's history. All this can be done by combining brain scanning technologies and artificial intelligence. - In 2016 NASA made an exciting announcement – there are some tiny frozen seas on Mars! In fact, scientists don't exclude the likelihood that the water there may flow underground. And where there’s water, there’s the possibility of life, right? - In 2016 a baby boy was born using a new and innovative technique that incorporates DNA from not two but three people! This scientific sensation allowed the baby’s parents to conceive a perfectly healthy newborn, despite the fact that the mother carries genes of Leigh syndrome, which is a fatal disorder that affects the central nervous system. - Scientists at The Ohio State University (go Buckeyes!) have spent nearly 15 weeks in the lab growing a human brain. The final product of this serious lab work has the same developmental level as a nine-week-old fetus! - As it turns out, we consume loads of poisonous chemicals every day without even realizing it. Plastic drink containers and bottles can lead to all sorts of health problems. Among them are uterine cancer, breast cancer, heart attack, diabetes, and that's just a drop in the bucket of the whole list of possible “surprises” you may end up with. - Teeny-tiny bots can store and transport remedies to sick and ailing parts in your body. Amazingly enough, these little babies can also detect diseased cells on their own! - Two years ago NASA came to the conclusion that there are nearly one billion planets that are similar to the Earth. And we’re talking about in our galaxy alone. Just imagine what could be outside of it! So, basically, what it means is that there are billions of planets where intelligent life could possibly live. - Spanish scientists have presented a prototype of a bioprinter that can print totally functional human skin! This skin can be used for transplantation, cosmetics testing, and really any type of medical experimentation. - Even though medicine continues to advance forward as quickly as it can with all its new and effective antibiotics and vaccines, it turns out that it isn’t moving fast enough. Unfortunately, some strains of bacteria are always a couple of steps ahead of us. - Such important things as dark matter and dark energy are completely unexplored to this day. The only thing astronomers are sure of is that all of these dark parts are the main causes for the expansion of the universe. - In 1923 scientists learned to control the brain's neurons, which allowed them to control movements and manipulate emotions and feelings. Sounds kind of dark, right? And that's not all. Facts that will change your perception of time! These are the surprising facts that you won’t believe and crazy facts that will shatter your concept of time! 7. Moon Landing Before Wheeled Suitcases Maybe you've heard the phrase, "We can put a man on the moon, but we can't…" This means, I can't believe humans can achieve something so brilliant, but not something so seemingly easy. Well, safe to assume this phrase was in its heyday the first 3 years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first landed on the moon in 1969. It's also safe to assume the most popular accompanying sentence to that phrase was "…but we can't put wheels on a suitcase!" For those three years, families walking through the airport must have been absolutely flabbergasted towards the reason why they had to carry every single heavy suitcase on their journey. They were saved in 1972 when Bernard Sadow finally was able to sell his rolling suitcase idea to department stores. Bernard claims he was turned away for years by everyone claiming that no one would pull a piece of luggage, maybe they thought the laziness wasn't stylish. Well, flash forward to 2018 and everyone is dressed head to toe in pajamas while they roll their suitcases at the airport. Note to inventors, capitalize on laziness. 6. Oxford Older Than Aztecs It is safe to assume everyone has studied the mighty Aztec Empire. It has undoubtedly produced some of the most interesting relics to study in textbooks and museums, and most students assume it was an ancient empire that predates most civilizations. This is not the case at all. The official beginning of the Aztec civilization traced to the completion of the city of Tenochtitlan in Mexico, which did not actually occur until 1325 AD! This is a full 229 years after the first classes at the University of Oxford began in 1096! What is even crazier is that the Aztecs barely had a rule at all. They were overtaken by Spanish conquerors in 1521, only 196 years after their beginning. That means the White House has been constructed and the home of presidents longer than the Aztecs ruled over central Mexico. 5. T. Rexs and Stegosauruses NOT Close If you've ever watched the Land Before Time, or any other kids show about dinosaurs, it's common for all of the species to be lumped together. That is completely long. In fact, two of the most well known dinosaurs, the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Stegosaurus lived almost 100 million years apart from each other. Stegosauruses lived about 150 million years ago and T. Rexs lived about 66 million years ago. That means that the Tyrannosaurus Rex is closer to humans! It just goes to show you how deep time goes compared to how we think.

If you get interested in truly random things that were of no importance during the day, and can’t find the answers, you’re going to just love this. We’ve done all the hard work for you and found the answers to the most burning random questions. Human saliva contains a natural painkiller that is six times more effective than morphine. But unlike the latter, it doesn't cause any side effects or addiction. When the Universe appeared, there were not so many substances out there: just hydrogen and a bit of helium, and almost nothing else. Stars convert their "fuel" into something else. This way, hydrogen gets turned into helium, and helium, in turn, transforms into nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, iron, and sulfur, in short, everything a human body is made of. This building material for our bodies comes from dying stars. Any human being is born with approximately 9,000 taste buds which work together with the sense of smell to provide you with the full picture. But after 40, the number of taste buds starts to become smaller which later leads to being unable to differentiate taste. As for the sense of smell, it doesn't fade until you're 70. In a study by Brown University, sleeping people were exposed to two scents: peppermint and pyridine, which is a typical byproduct of fire. No one responded to the peppermint smell. The system of your blood vessels is so long it can go around the planet more than two times. How we perceive the size of objects depends on different factors, for example, visual angle. And even if you know the actual size of an object, you still may misestimate it if the distance between you and the object is too big, for example. In 1991, sociologist Scott Feld calculated the number of friends people in one test group had. Then he compared the results with the average number of friends the friends of those in the test group had. It turned out that the second number was always bigger than the first one. Are you afraid of alien invasions or giant meteors rushing toward Earth? Oh, forget about them! There’s something much more dangerous lurking in space, and it’s called "strange matter." While people don't know much about it, experts are sure that under particular conditions, this stuff would be able to eat our planet alive! Imagine a jar of honey that suddenly goes nuts and decides to consume everything around: the table, plates, your kitchen, you, the whole galaxy! That's exactly what may happen if the strange matter was left to roam on its own. But would there be a way to stop all this from happening? Other videos you might like: The Bermuda Triangle Mystery Has Been Solved https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_5n7URd2Gk& The Great Pyramid Mystery Has Finally Been Solved https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sONLWHuYo7w& How Deep Can You Possibly Dig? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zU_CiB2GnQ& TIMESTAMPS: What's so unique about neutron stars? 0:35 How just one teaspoon can weight 10 million tons 1:31 Strange quarks. What is it? 2:34 Strange matter may be... contagious! 4:01 Is it really so dangerous? (Oh, yeah!) 5:04 Could we stop it? 5:49 How to avoid becoming spaghetti 6:46 What physicists say 7:48 #space #blackhole #strangemater Preview photo credit: Cartoon fantastic planet, worlds asteroid set. cosmic, alien space element for game: Designed by vectorpouch/Freepik, https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/cartoon-fantastic-planet-worlds-asteroid-set-cosmic-alien-space-element-game_2238498.htm Animation is created by Bright Side. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Imagine this: a super powerful and massive star is reaching the end of its life. If the star had been massive enough, it’ll produce a black hole. But if it wasn't that big, a neutron star will appear in its place. - Scientists say that one day these neutrons can get tired of holding all that weight, and the structure keeping the entire thing together will collapse. This leads to the appearance of a quark star. - The pressure inside a quark star is getting stronger. As a result, things called “strange quarks” can appear in its core. They’ve been dubbed “strange” because, well, they don’t behave like normal quarks. - But strange matter – oh, that's a bundle of chaos! Here’s where the “strange” part comes in. Its quarks have no boundaries – they just run totally amok wherever and however they want. - When two neutron stars collide or when a neutron star crashes into a black hole, these strangelets break free. Sadly, a strangelet wouldn't care whether the object it's encountered is a star or a planet full of life! - To get rid of strange matter, the only thing we could do is toss it into a black hole. But this escape plan raises all kinds of questions itself. - But as soon as you get to the black hole’s edge, aka the event horizon, you won't be able to turn back because it’s the point of no return. - Everything that approaches a black hole gets broken down into individual atoms. And we become long thin pasta. - At this point, strange matter is just a theory that hasn't been confirmed yet. Physicists have considered creating strange matter in a particle accelerator. Luckily, they later came to the conclusion that it's impossible to do since particle accelerators get so hot that they’d immediately melt any appearing strangelets. Do you know, why the apple in the Apple logo is bitten but not whole? What do the colors in the BMW logo symbolize? We found 12 stories that uncover and explain little secrets of logos we all know very well. TIMESTAMPS Amazon 0:49 Ferrari 1:21 Apple 1:52 Wikipedia 2:26 BMW 3:05 Pinterest 3:29 Nike 3:47 Lacoste 4:22 Starbucks 4:57 Pepsi 5:23 McDonald’s 5:55 Metro Goldwyn Mayer 6:40 SUMMARY - Have noticed the arrow that connects A with Z? Yes, it does look like a smile, but it also shows that Amazon sells everything from A to Z. - In his biography, Enzo Ferrari mentions that the horse silhouette was initially painted on the plane of a famous Italian ace pilot Francesco Baracca. Enzo met Francesco’s mother who asked him to put the horse on his cars for good luck. Enzo agreed and added the canary yellow background. - Designer Rob Janoff says that he chose a bitten apple to show its dimensions. You see, a whole apple can be confused with any other round-shaped fruit. - The logo is incomplete, which indicates the very essence of the Wikipedia project: the encyclopedia is incomplete, and it's constantly being updated. And anyone, no matter what their language is, can make a contribution. - BMW stands for Bavarian Motor Work, and the logo was simply created from the national colors of Bavaria (which are obviously blue and white). - If you take a closer look the letter «P», you’ll notice that it looks a lot like a pin. So, Pinterest quite literally pins photos but does it digitally. - The logo, which many people simply call «The Swoosh» symbolizes motion and speed. It is often associated with a wing of Nike, a Greek goddess of Victory. - In 1923, René Lacoste, a French tennis player, was walking down the street with the captain of his team, Alan Moore, and noticed a crocodile skin suitcase in one of the shop windows. Lacoste and Moore made a bet that if René won the next game, Alan would buy him that suitcase. - In the beginning, Starbucks was a small coffee shop in Seattle. The founders wanted to make a logo that would somehow represent the seafaring history of the city. They created a logo with a topless mermaid holding two tails. Later when the company expanded they had to censor the logo, so now her breasts are covered by her long hair. - The agency that Pepsi hired to develop the latest logo explained that it represented the theory of relativity, feng shui, geodynamics and many-many more. - In 1962 McDonald’s hired Louis Cheskin to develop a new logo for the company. His idea was to replace the Speedee the Cook logo with golden arches, making an «M» that we know very well today. He explained that such a shape resembles female breasts, and makes you hungry. - Dozens of poor lions were tortured before the creators got a perfect shot. How could they do such a terrible thing? This is what you could think if you saw this fake picture that is now on the Internet. That is definitely NOT how Metro Goldwyn Mayer made their famous logo. In fact, seven different lions were properly tamed and trained to roar on cue. Don’t believe the Web. No lions were harmed. Bernard Shaw once said that this world is full of idlers who don’t want to work and just want to make money, while those who are ready to work never get rich. You work hard but your salary still leaves much to be desired? You have to change something. If you wanna be rich, you gotta work hard, plan your budget and live within your means. This all sounds like well-known, logical advice. However, there are some less obvious ways to get there, such as avoiding shopping on sunny days or in comfortable shoes. It only makes sense to clean every plate straight away if you’re eating foods that stick to the plate for good. - Try calculating the price of something you want to buy in your own labor costs and hours. - A 2017 study from researchers at New York University and the University of Sydney in Australia has shown that people are more likely to take risks in bright light. - Do you invest a lot of time in your Instagram page? Make it work for you! If you have a hobby you’re passionate about, or are just great at describing your daily routine, turn it into your part-time or full-time job! - Even if you don’t have a large family and don’t need that much food or supplies, you can team up with your neighbors and order stuff together. - Fill the kettle with exactly as much water as you need to have tea, for example. It will not only save water, but also energy, and Mother Nature will be grateful to you. - The next time you decide to head to a hardware store for a tool you’ll likely never use again, go to a rental shop instead. And, it doesn’t only work with tools these days. - If you get hungry on your way somewhere and stop at a store or fast food restaurant, you’ll likely overspend on things you don’t really need and won’t finish anyway. Even if you’re not that big on statistical data, some facts can simply blow your mind. We’ve put together a list of some amazing facts you didn’t know about the Earth, humans, and even hamburgers. While it definitely wasn’t an easy task, tons of volunteers, environmentalists and students joined together with scientists to try and count the number of trees on the planet. As for the number of stars in the Milky Way, that job was left just to the scientists themselves. The results were pretty shocking: there are almost 3 trillion trees on our planet and only 400 billion stars in the Milky Way. The biggest portion of the German population belongs to people between the ages of 25 and 54. They form the prime working age group and take up 40% of the whole population of the country. Over the last century, from 1917 to 2016, Mary and James held the record for the most favorite baby names for many parents. The People's Republic of China is a truly “golden republic” since it’s the world's largest gold producer. The average person takes 7,500 steps a day. The average life expectancy, in turn, is 80 years. Based on this information, researchers calculated that we walk nearly 110,000 miles over our lifetime. Americans clearly love television more than any other nation in the world. It turns out, they spend one fifth of their day, or 270 minutes, watching their favorite programs. The United States is the biggest source of spam, sending almost 18% of the world’s junk mail. Turkey and Russia came second and third, respectively, sending the world 9% and 8% of its spam. McDonald's has many fans all over the world, so it comes as no surprise that the company sells 75 hamburgers every single second. Music: Nutty Comedy – Biz Baz Studio Mr. Sunny Face – Wayne Jones Fun Activity Montage - Biz Baz Studio https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS There are less stars in the Milky Way than there are trees on Earth. 0:34 Germany has the lowest share of child population in the world. 1:30 Mary and James are the most popular baby names. 2:15 China can also be called the “golden republic”. 2:58 There are more than 200,000 Karlssons in Sweden. 3:35 Over the last millennium, the Earth’s population has become over 22 times larger. 4:14 In a lifetime, you walk a distance that could wrap the Earth 4½ times. 4:57 People in the U.S. watch over 4 hours of TV a day. 5:33 Saturday is the least common birth day. 6:10 90% of the emails people receive is spam. 6:47 Denmark has the most working mothers in the world. 7:28 McDonald's sells 75 hamburgers every second. 8:07 1,700 people become millionaires in the U.S. every day. 8:40 Bangladesh has a bigger population than Russia. 9:26 SUMMARY -It turns out there are almost 3 trillion trees on our planet and only 400 billion stars in the Milky Way. -According to the distribution of population by age, only 12% is under the age of 14 in Germany. -Almost 5 million boys were named James and 3 and a half million girls were called Mary from 1917 to 2016. -For the last 10 years, China has been producing approximately 440 tons of gold each year. -There are over 200,000 Karlssons and almost 240,000 Anderssons in the country. -On July 1st of the year 1000, there were only 275 million people on the planet, while today the population of Earth is 7 billion people. -Researchers calculated that we walk nearly 110,000 miles over our lifetime. -Americans spend one fifth of their day, or 270 minutes, watching their favorite programs. -Saturday is the least common birth day with 12% of births. -According to a report from Cisco, about 90% of all email sent worldwide is spam. -Denmark has the most mothers in its workforce: 82% of them work after having a baby. -McDonald's sells 75 hamburgers every single second, and you can see how much of each menu item they’ve sold worldwide in real time online here: http://www.everysecond.io/mcdonalds; https://www.youtube.com/user/McDonaldsUS -According to Bloomberg and based on projections by the Boston Consulting Group, by the year 2020, 3.1 million new members will join the millionaires' club. -Bangladesh, a country about the size of Iowa, has a lot more people (165 million) than the biggest country in the world, Russia (144 million). Many of us have somehow romanticized life in castles with all the feasts, beautiful outfits, lords, and ladies. But medieval life was as far from the glamorous picture in your head as possible! Narrow passageways, smoky fires, gloomy and dark rooms - that's what would have greeted you upon setting foot in a castle in medieval times. And that’s just the good part... Castles were ice cold inside. They were huge stone boxes with freezing cold dark rooms inside. Although castles looked inaccessible from the outside, they were literally one large and mostly open space inside. There was no privacy in castles! And you couldn't find solitude even in the toilets. At any time, you could have a neighbor or two engaged in the same delicate business. Besides, for better safety, castle windows were small and narrow and didn't let in much sun. Sum up these facts, and you'll get a huge stone box with freezing cold dark rooms inside. - Although castles looked inaccessible from the outside, they were literally one large and mostly open space inside. People had to spend days and nights in the company of other people. - A medieval toilet was actually just a long wooden bench with numerous holes for numerous... well, I think you get it. No walls, no partitions. - Most people didn't care about hygiene and couldn't even afford to take a bath every now and then. A bathtub and fresh water were something that only high classes could afford. - If you were a castle inhabitant, rats were your constant companions. It may seem like people would have gotten used to these pests and ignored them for the most part, but no. - A medieval castle woke up at sunrise, since sunshine was pretty much the only source of light in that time, and those who worked outside tried to use it to the fullest. - Lords and ladies could sleep in if they wanted. If not, they would wake up at dawn, hear Mass, and have white bread and wine for breakfast. - Feasts were numerous and frequent. They took place in big halls, and everyone had to sit according to their status. Guest’s food options also depended on how important a person was. - The floor was covered with herbs and reeds which later absorbed the grease and liquids. After feasts, servants swept it all up and replaced it with new rushes. If you believe that people were less eccentric in the past than they are today, think of their fashions and traditions. Maybe you’ll change your opinion. We’ve gathered twelve really strange things that our ancestors thought normal. TIMESTAMPS The first and second sleep 0:32 Live alarm clocks 1:11 Dresses for boys 1:49 Chopines 2:30 Bloodletting against all diseases 3:04 Poor hygiene 3:33 Post-mortem photos 4:09 Radioactive beauty products 4:44 Heroin as a cough remedy 5:35 Smoking onboard planes 6:09 Bathing machines 6:35 Rocks as toilet paper 7:11 #interestingfacts #historicalfacts SUMMARY - The first sleep started at sunset and lasted until about midnight; then people would wake up and stay awake for 2-3 hours. Some used that time to pray or read, and some spent it with their family or neighbors. - A knocker-upper was a profession that existed from the mid-18th century until the 1950s. Their job was to wake people who had to get up early. They knocked on their clients’ windows with sticks or shot at them with peashooters. - From the 16th century and until around 1920, it was customary for little boys up until a certain age (4-8 years) to wear dresses. The main reason was perhaps the high cost of clothing: dresses were easier to make "to grow into." - Chopines, also known as zoccoli or pianelle, are a kind of platform shoe up to 20 inches (50 cm) high. Small wonder that those who wore them required the help of servants in order not to fall victim to fashion. - This treatment mode was popular for 2,000 years up until the early 20th century. Bloodletting was practiced to treat any ailment and often did more harm than good, weakening the patient even further. - Isabella I of Castille was proud of the fact that she only washed twice in her life: at birth and before her wedding. According to one testimony, a cavalier once made a comment upon her dirty hands and nails, to which the Queen replied, “Oh, if only you could see my feet!” - Another custom that today seems very bizarre. However, in the 19th century, it was a way to preserve the memory of deceased loved ones. - In the early 20th century, radiation was perceived exclusively as a positive phenomenon, which swindlers didn’t fail to take advantage of: you could buy cosmetics, food, and drinks enriched with radium and thorium, radioactive souvenirs, and even devices for saturating water with radioactive elements. - Surprisingly, 100 years ago, heroin was considered a harmless alternative to morphine and was sold in pharmacies as a cough medicine. It was later discovered that heroin turns into morphine in the liver, and in 1924 its use was prohibited. - As recently as 50 or 60 years ago, smoking wasn’t regarded as that bad a habit. People didn’t deny themselves this dubious pleasure even during flights, regardless of the presence of other passengers. - Unlike us, people in the 18th and 19th centuries couldn’t just go into the water on the beach. They had to use bathing machines: special carts that looked like beach huts. - The list of things people used before the invention of toilet paper could go on and on. It includes plant leaves, corn cobs, coconut shells, sheep wool and cloth (for those who could afford them), sponge on a stick, or just water. Whether you’ve seen her portrayed on the big screen, you learned about her in school, or probably a combination of both, Cleopatra is definitely one of the most well-known names out there! She was the last Egyptian pharaoh and without a doubt one of the most influential women in the history of humankind. But because the story of the queen’s life has been told in so many books and movies, it can be hard to separate historical facts from fiction. But we’re about to bust some of the most popular myths about Cleopatra and open your eyes to several peculiar facts of her real biography. TIMESTAMPS Cleopatra married two of her younger brothers. 1:15 Julius Caesar erected a statue of her in the Temple of Venus Genetrix. 2:40 Mark Antony once skipped an invasion to spend time with Cleo. 4:10 She wasn’t exactly a beauty. 5:14 Cleopatra wasn't just a ruler, she was a mother too. 5:56 She loved spending money, but not only on herself. 6:31 Cleopatra might not have died from a snake bite. 6:55 She could speak Egyptian Arabic. 7:40 Cleopatra's famous makeup was a sort of protection. 8:45 Cleopatra owned a perfume factory. 9:37 Bonus: Cleopatra spent money on a cocktail that would be equivalent to over $16 million today 10:21 #cleopatrafacts #cleo #juliuscaesar Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Cleopatra ended up marrying her little brother, Ptolemy XIII, who was just 10 at the time. After his death, which occurred several years later, she married her other brother, Ptolemy XIV. -Caesar erected a statue of Cleopatra in the Venus Temple in Rome. -Cleopatra showed up to her first meeting with Mark Antony dressed as the Greek goddess Aphrodite. To no surprise, Mark Antony was impressed, and that's how their partnership started. -Her contemporaries saw her beauty not so much in her looks but in her wit, character, and irresistible charisma. -While Cleopatra didn't have any children with her brothers, she did have kids from both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. -Cleopatra did spend around 50% of her share of the kingdom’s income on beauty and other luxuries. But she was also an extremely efficient ruler who cared about her people. -Ancient historian Strabo wrote that Cleopatra always had a comb soaked in poison with her, so she possibly could’ve killed herself with it. -People in Cleopatra's family spoke Greek and had Greek traditions. Cleopatra was the first in her family to accept the local culture, ancient customs, and Egyptian gods. -Cleopatra’s makeup contained 4 lead-based substances and was used to fend off eye infections, which were common in Ancient Egypt. -The ruins of Cleopatra’s perfume factory were found near Ein Gedi, which is situated on the Dead Sea. That place was also used as a beauty salon and spa. -Cleopatra once had a bet with Mark Antony that she could spend 10 million sesterces, equivalent to $16.7 million today on just one dinner. The gemstone, which is now called the Hope Diamond, was formed deep within the Earth more than 1 billion years ago! It was originally used as one of the decorations of an Indian temple idol. But one day a Hindu priest decided it was far too beautiful and valuable to leave there and plucked it out. He was severely punished, of course, but the Hope Diamond was already out of the temple. “The King's jewel,” “The blue of France” - these are some nicknames for the most mysterious and seemingly dangerous gem in history. The selected few who were “lucky” enough to possess the famous Hope Diamond died horrific deaths. But in the beginning, nobody could foresee the trouble... Rumor also has it that Tavernier had a serious raging fever not long after he got the marvelous Hope Diamond. - The Hope Diamond curse got to King Louis XIV as well – he died suffering of gangrene. Moreover, all but one of his children didn't make it passed their childhood, though it wasn't that uncommon those days. - Both Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed by guillotine during the French revolution. The Hope Diamond was stolen from the Royal Storehouse shortly after. - A couple of years passed and the diamond was suddenly discovered in England. Well how did it get there? Several sources confirmed that it was actually owned by King George IV of the United Kingdom. - Evalyn Walsh McLean absolutely adored the Hope Diamond and wore it almost every single day. But the happiness didn't last long. First, Evalyn's mother-in-law died. Then her 9-year-old son was in a car accident, and didn’t make it. This broke her and her husband so much that he actually left for another woman and later died in a mental hospital. - Now the Hope Diamond weighs a little bit over 45 carats, still has its deep greyish-blue color, and even produces a dangerous red glow if you decide to expose it to short-wave ultraviolet light. - Despite the diamond's rich history, there are still heated debates as to whether it's actually cursed or not. Some people are sure that all the legends about the jewel's cursed origins were simply created to boost its popularity. - In 1911, the New York Times came out with a whole list of the diamond's supposed “victims.” The list consisted of about 14 people who died tragic deaths not long after possessing or even holding the Hope Diamond. When you live in a country for many years, everything looks ordinary and familiar. But an outsider will always spot some curious quirks in your customs and behaviors that make them think, “What’s going on here?” Life in the US can puzzle newcomers in many ways, from buying foods and magazines in a pharmacy to deep-frying almost anything you can think of. For example, if you’re not from the US, it may be puzzling to walk into a pharmacy and see aisles and aisles of over-the-counter meds, toys, makeup, clothes, and even groceries! In America, if a restaurant doesn’t offer free refills on fountain drinks, it’s kind of strange. But in other countries, once you buy one beverage, that’s it! And Americans speak so loud compared to other countries. Whether it’s talking on your cell phone or chatting with a friend over lunch, Americans seem to really like projecting their voice. Sales tax is NOT included in the price of an item! - A lot of Americans don’t feel the need to take long vacations, so they often let vacation and sick hours pile up without ever using them. Plus, most employers only give you 2 weeks out of the year! - In the States, this red plastic cup is synonymous with “party on, dude!” But other countries apparently don’t recognize this cup to mean the same thing. - Whether it’s an ugly sweater from Grandma or a heinous pair of earrings from an ex, if you don’t like it, you can just return it! - Cab drivers, servers, hairdressers – you gotta tip ‘em! Tips are acceptable for almost any service in the US and sometimes consist of 25% of the bill! - Speaking of drinks, if it’s not a hot coffee or cocoa, then it’s probably got ice in it. Tea, coffee, lemonade, soda, water – Americans like it on the rocks! - Americans must have an aversion to being hot! In many parts of Europe, people simply don’t use air conditioning as much as they do in the States. - So many visitors to the US get really confused by the month-day-year thing because most parts of the world write the day, then the month, and finally the year. - Walk into any grocery store aisle, and you’ll notice at least 10 different options for cookies, crackers, or cereal. - When getting into a cab, it’s customary in the States to scoot on into the back seat. But in countries like New Zealand and Australia, riding anywhere but shotgun can be a little rude. She was kidnapped by Indians and then sold into the slavery of the Mohave. - Apparently, the photographer did something wrong to baseball player Charles Radbourn because he (without thinking twice) showed the middle finger at the camera. - This is what these Princeton students looked like after a seemingly innocent snowball fight. They could easily be mistaken for soldiers who have just returned from a battlefield or for the victims of angry bees. - At the beginning of the 20th century, plastic surgery was far from perfect, but it had an alternative: masks replacing lost parts of the face. One of the experts in making such masks was the sculptor Anna Coleman Ladd. - The “Alton Giant,” Robert Pershing Wadlow, remains the tallest man in the world’s history: he was 8′ 11” (272 cm) tall and weighed 439 lb (199 kg). - This man’s name is August Landmesser. All of the cinema was there. And then in comes Jayne Mansfield, the last one to come. - British woman Ethel Granger decided to change extremely to please her husband, William. She had to wear corsets, not taking them off at night, as well as high heels and pretentious piercings, for which Ethel’s husband personally pierced her nose with a silver needle. - Most of us have seen the photo of the famous "Abbey Road" cover. Yet there are other pictures of the band made in the same place — 6 of them. - Uncle Sam, strictly watching from campaign posters, is a collective image. However, in this photo, it’s easy to see the similarity of the "uncle" with one of his prototypes — a veteran named Walter Botts. - Astronaut Charles Duke, who took part in the Apollo 16 mission as a Lunar Module Pilot, left his family photo (Charles, his wife, Dorothy, and their sons Charles Jr. and Thomas) on the surface of the Moon. - Before the Islamic Revolution of 1979, many Iranians looked like Europeans or Americans: they wore fashionable clothes, women didn’t hide their hair, and they didn’t even hesitate to appear on a beach in a bikini. - Lenny Kravitz posted this photo on his Instagram, saying it was made on September 2, 1993, during the MTV Music Awards ceremony. There are so many weird historical facts we don’t know about that sometimes it seems reality is way more exciting than fiction. And such stories make our world a more intriguing place. TIMESTAMPS Albert Einstein for president 0:36 The strangest SOS message 1:01 King Tutankhamun’s parents were brother and sister 2:00 People actually wore flour sacks 2:19 The largest bird in the world 2:57 The reason we use fingerprints 3:28 Wake-up call 3:53 Painful Asian beauty 4:19 Huge crystal pyramids 4:36 Stalin invented Photoshop 5:01 Some Saints look like they’re sleeping 5:24 Clue to the location of the Holy Grail 5:52 Where the word "Hooker" comes from 6:25 The most horrifying mummies 6:53 Just a cough syrup for our ancestors 7:15 They thought Rasputin was immortal 7:41 A monkey fought bravely in World War I 8:11 Napoleon and the Sphinx’s nose 9:07 Van Gogh and his ear 9:40 Vikings’ horned helmets 10:12 Stonehenge 10:40 Discovery of America 11:12 Ossian’s poems 11:35 SUMMARY It’s the age of information, and we often face new facts that replace our previous views, right? So, here is our bonus – six historical facts we’ve all believed since school which turned out to be false. 1. Napoleon and the Sphinx’s nose The Great Sphinx of Giza is known for its lack of a nose. As legend has it, Napoleon’s army destroyed this body part during a battle with the Turks in 1798. However, Danish traveler Frederic Norden’s notes, in which he portrayed the statue without a nose in 1737, disprove the Napoleon story. 2. Van Gogh and his ear In reality, the whole thing happened after a conflict with his friend, Paul Gauguin, during which Van Gogh attacked him with a razor. In a fit of remorse (or, according to some researchers, madness), Vincent cut off a lobe of his ear that same night. 3. Vikings’ horned helmets We’re used to seeing Vikings portrayed in horned helmets, but archeologists still can’t say what shape their head guards were. Such helmets were only drawn in their tombs, and scientists think they were used for rituals, not in combat. Also, they’d been used since the Bronze Age long before the time of the Vikings. 4. Stonehenge Stonehenge is one of the biggest mysteries of the world, and new hypotheses about it are regularly born. Yet originally it looked nothing like it does today: in 1901, William Gowland initiated his restoration of the monument. Recent photos prove that now it looks quite different than in ancient times. 5. Discovery of America In our history lessons, we were told that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. However, the first Europeans to have traveled to the New World were Vikings at the end of the 10th century. That’s when the first genetic contact occurred too. 6. Ossian’s poems Scottish poet James McPherson was renowned for translating the poems of Ossian, a Celtic bard of the 3rd century, from Gaelic. However, when faced with demands to present the manuscripts, McPherson eluded the subject. The manuscripts have still not been found, and the poems themselves are now considered a mystification. Which fact has impressed you the most? Our favorite is the one about the monkey that fought in World War I. Share your thoughts in the comments! Living in a modern age, we’re constantly surrounded by all sorts of tech. We’re so used to it, that we don’t even notice how ingeniously designed it really is. And there a lot of small mysteries: Why does a keyboard have legs? How does my phone vibrate? Why doesn’t this USB plug ever fit on the first try? Today, you’ll have all the answers! In fact, remotes can use any wavelength of light to pass a message to a TV, it’s just that infrared is much more convenient in production. - Having the keyboard in a flat position is actually better for your wrists. These legs are only here to help you see the letters you’re tying more clearly. - USBs are made this way so you can’t plug them into the computer the wrong way. Even if there wasn’t a plastic part inside to prevent it, a USB inserted upside down wouldn’t even work. - Imbalanced motors are helpful are really tiny – a bit bigger than a pencil tip, and there are several of them located in different parts of your smartphone. Motors spin a weight, but this weight is shaped like a half-circle, so their movement produces an uneven force. - A million smartphones contain around 772 lbs of silver and 75 lbs of gold. No wonder phones cost so much these days! - Two striped plugs can separate two signals and that helps to transfer stereo-sound. All music today is in stereo, so your left headphone speaker plays a slightly different track than your right. - Did you know that by shaking your smartphone you can cancel your latest actions? On iPhones, this function comes by default, but is downloadable for Android devices too. - A little house symbol tells you that this device is only suitable for house use. - The trash can crossed out means that the charger needs to be recycled as tech-waste. Simply throwing them in a garbage can may result in environmental damage. - If there is ‘I’ before ‘V’ – this level is standard for the US. If there is only ‘V’ – this charger meets standards for Europe too. What’s normal in one country would be considered weird in another. We’ve collected 12 of the most interesting facts about different countries. Some of them will definitely surprise you! For example, there's a wedding tradition in Germany called “Polterabend”. The night before the wedding, the soon-to-be newlyweds throw an informal get-together where guests often show up with gifts. The peak of this “wedding eve” party is the guests breaking porcelain and sometimes ceramic items, such as flower vases, dishes, and the like. Pretty much everything can be broken, except glass, which they believe symbolizes happiness. TIMESTAMPS In Germany, guests break porcelain objects before the wedding. 0:28 People in Russia have a moment of silence before any trip. 1:13 In Spain, people celebrate the New Year by eating 12 grapes. 1:59 Japan has a strict waist size rule. 2:44 In Denmark, your family and friends throw cinnamon at you if you're single at 25. 3:29 You can hire a stripper to dance at a funeral in Taiwan. 4:11 Niue uses Pokémon and Star Wars money. 4:43 The calendar in Ethiopia is seven years behind. 5:13 You can legally marry a dead person in France. 5:54 Everyone in Vietnam has the same birthday. 6:47 Babies in India are dropped from a 50-foot tower. 7:26 Handsome men can wipe your tears in Japan. 8:12 SUMMARY - The night before the wedding, the soon-to-be newlyweds throw an informal get-together where guests often show up with gifts. The peak of this “wedding eve” party is the guests breaking porcelain and sometimes ceramic items, such as flower vases, dishes, and the like. - There's a very popular tradition and superstition in Russia to sit in silence for about 5-10 seconds before leaving the house to go on a trip. - As the bell strikes 12 times at midnight, everyone around the table starts eating their 12 grapes, one for each of the chimes and for every month of the upcoming year. - In January 2008, Japan passed the “Metabo Law” to fight obesity and its associated illnesses. According to the law, there's a waist size limit for Japanese citizens aged 40-74. - In Denmark, if you turn 25 there and you're still a single pringle, you get tied to a chair or lamppost while your friends and family cover you in cinnamon from head to toe. - It's no big deal for people in Taiwan to get some pole dancers or strippers to dance for the dead at a funeral. - The small Polynesian island of Niue, an associated sovereign state of New Zealand, has some pretty awesome currency. - Ethiopia. They decided to stick to the Coptic calendar, which has 13 months instead of 12. And 12 months out of those 13 consist of 30 days each. - In 1950 the French government legally clarified the ritual. The process is rather complex. - Every Vietnamese person shares the same birthday as their family, friends, and everyone else in the country! - In western India, babies there are dropped off the roof of a 50-foot-tall shrine to fall on a stretched-out sheet held by a group of men waiting at the bottom. - In Japan, there's a company called “Ikemeso Danshi”, which basically means “Handsome Weeping Boys”. And you can pay to have one of their gorgeous men wipe away your tears as you watch some heart-wrenching movie. What’s the most interesting fact about your country? Tell us in the comments below! The human mind is a complex system and with some simple psychological tips you can control yourself, look more attractive, and even spend less money. These 7 psychological effects have the power to control a lot of your actions, but as long as you keep them in mind you can stand strong against them and use them for your own good. Ask yourself from time to time, "Am I doing this simply to make somebody like or notice me or because it's what I really want?" And be honest! Try to keep your mind clear and stay critical. Taking part in a questionnaire or survey doesn't automatically mean that you're supposed to give a positive review of the product just because somebody considered you an expert in this particular field. The best way to get something off your brain is to always finish what you’ve started. If there's no way you can do that in real life, then do it in your head. Every time you buy something really expensive, try to be honest with yourself and ask, "Am I paying for the quality or the ‘ooh’s’ and ‘aah’s’ of people around me?" Don't be afraid to look clumsy or do something stupid. In fact, this will only make you cuter and more relatable! These kinds of people seem more approachable than those who strut down the street like royalty. Not nearly as many people as you think actually notice your mishaps because they’re all too busy worrying about themselves! If you have a coffee stain on your shirt or a big zit on your cheek, don't focus on it so much. If you suddenly feel unwell in a public place and you need help ASAP, don't address the whole crowd by shouting “Help!” or “Call 911!” Choose one specific person. This way, you’ll have better chances at being heard and getting the help you need. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS The Social Facilitation Effect 0:44 The Hawthorne Effect 1:45 The Zeigarnik Effect 2:49 The Veblen Effect 3:51 The Pratfall Effect 4:54 The Spotlight Effect 5:44 The Bystander Effect 7:00 SUMMARY -People tend to act differently depending on whether they’re alone or in the presence of others. -The Observer Effect happens when people modify their behavior if they know they're being watched. When you’re involved in something new and are interested in some experiment, you subconsciously act in a more eager or enthusiastic way. -People are better at remembering information or events that were left incomplete or unfinished. -If you’re a slave to the constant new releases of some phone or luxury bag or whatever, then you've already fallen into the Veblen Effect trap. -People who make silly mistakes or even sometimes look funny seem more attractive and charming. -The Spotlight Effect makes people believe that others notice them more than they really do, especially their faults. -The Bystander Effect says that people are less likely to provide help to a victim if there are others present. 15 Useless Body Parts That We Don't Really Need. We can surprisingly live without these 15 body parts. If you ever thought that all people are built the same, think again. If you thought that all our body parts are vitally important, you were not right again. In the first chapter of The Descent of Man, Charles Darwin identified roughly a dozen body parts that he gleefully described as "useless, or nearly useless." Darwin's catalog was far from complete: our bodies are littered with the parts we don't need. TIMESTAMPS Body hair 1:01 Paranasal sinuses 1:40 Extrinsic ear muscles 2:05 Wisdom teeth 2:45 Neck rib 3:39 Palmaris muscle 4:20 Male nipples 4:54 Arrector pili muscles 5:36 Appendix 6:39 Thirteenth rib 7:40 Coccyx 8:10 Third eyelid 8:57 Darwin's point 9:37 Subclavius muscle 10:20 Toes 10:48 #humanbody #factshuman #muscles SUMMARY - Apparently, most hair on the human body serves no function, so it is very likely to get extinct in the future! Besides brows perhaps, they keep sweat from our eyes. - And we have a lot: frontal, ethmoidal, sphenoidal, maxillary sinuses. In fact, no one knows why we still have these troublesome mucus-lined cavities! - Some animals, rabbits, and dogs, for example, can move their ears independently. How does it happen? Thanks to these exotic-sounding muscles. But you know what? People also have them! - As human jaws have become smaller in the process of evolution, the rest of people simply don’t have space in their mouths for these teeth! Back in the days when toothpaste didn’t exist, they were kind of backup grinders. - Have you never heard about neck ribs? It is a set of cervical ribs, possibly a leftover from the age of reptiles. They still appear in less than 1 percent of the population. - There is a long narrow muscle running from the elbow to the wrist. It is already missing in 11 percent of humans today, so it is a safe bet that with time it will disappear completely. - Nipples are present in both males and females. Men generally lack the necessary levels of prolactin to stimulate lactation and typically cannot produce milk. - Goosebumps are the indicator of them at work. We get them when we are frightened, amazed or cold. Apparently, we have lost most of the fur and acquired warm clothes. We don’t need any additional protection from freezing temperatures or the source to intimidate our rivals anymore. - Some research shows that an appendix can be, in fact, useful! It might store special bacteria good for those who suffer from diarrhea. - Our closest cousins, chimpanzees, and gorillas have an extra set of ribs. What about humans? Most of us have 12, except for 8% of adults - they have an extra one! - It's all that is left of the tail that most mammals still use for balance and communication. What is more, there have been 100 documented cases of babies who were born with a tail. What is the purpose of a tail-bone? There is none. - A third eyelid, you will ask, do we have it? Yes, we, humans, retain a tiny fold in the inner corner of the eye. It is what is left from membrane birds, and mammals have had for protecting the eye and sweeping out debris, at the same time providing visibility. - Darwin's point is a small folded point of skin toward the top of each ear that is occasionally found in modern humans. It may be a remnant of a larger shape that helped to focus distant sounds. Nowadays only 10% of people have this “greeting from the past.” - Subclavius muscle is a small muscle which stretches under the shoulder from the first rib to the collarbone. It would be beneficial if humans were still walking on all fours. - Scientists have found out that humans used to walk and balance more in the middle of their feet, but now we have gradually transferred to balancing more toward the side of our big toe.
