On March 19, Simon Schama was joined onstage by Adam Hochschild to talk about The Story of the Jews, Mr. Schama's multimedia account of Jewish history from 1000 BCE to present times. He also showed clips from the five-part PBS documentary series. Although Judaism is the only religion that commands us to remember for future generations, Mr. Schama is determined to portray Jewish history not as a history of suffering or Jews as a people apart. It was an entertaining evening with two charming intellectuals on subjects usually discussed reverentially. Author, humorist and radio host of A Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor stood on Kanbar stage on November 7 and shared stories through his new collection of original poems, O, What a Luxury. His performance was much like an hour of stand-up, though it felt less rehearsed, which added to its charm. He included some sweet bits about why he loves San Francisco and some amusing vignettes on his life, and the long road to writing this collection. Interspersed throughout, he recited poems, including one on the joy of urination and fatherhood. It felt very much like a full circle moment for him. A joy.

Take two men with the gift of gab, a hot book on a controversial topic, put them in front of a sold out audience, and what do you get? One fabulous evening! Yes, Michael Krasny gave one of his best interviews on Tuesday, Oct. 1 when he sat down with Reza Aslan to discuss Reza's superb new book ZEALOT. Michael was in his element: relaxed, funny, and charming as could be. And Reza Aslan is on top of the world right now -- and the NYT bestseller list. In addition to the book, and why they think it has sparked so much controversy -- and why now, they discussed middle east politics and Iran.

George Saunders and Karen Russell shared the stage for the first time on January 16th at the JCCSF. Judson True did a superb job moderating the discussion which ranged from creative process and writing styles, to when they decided they wanted to be writers, teaching, and family. Some profound insights from the master Saunders and ethereal quotes from the delightful and delighted Russell.

Bob Saget charmed a multi-generational audience with tales of his life and career, ranging from his time on "Full House" and "America's Funniest Home Videos" to his cameo appearances in "Entourage" and his stand-up specials. While the crowd braced itself for his well-known profanity, he mostly kept it in check, explaining that, "it wouldn't be appropriate in this context." This kind of restraint, from the man who titled his memoir Dirty Daddy, gave insight into the man behind the potty mouth-- a kind, thoughtful, smart-- yes-- family man.

"Un/Guarding The Harvest" is produced for the video installation "we are not permanent but we are not temporary" a series of four videos exploring Sukkot's core themes: impermanence of life, searching and wandering for a place to call home, and the welcoming of strangers. Featuring choreography by Nina Haft in collaboration with dancers Peiling Kao, Frances Sedayao, Anthony 'AnTz' Johnson, Justin Sharlman, Krystal Bates and Shawn Hawkins. Artist Statement For this video project, I invited several of my own Ushpizin (exalted guests/artists) to join me in considering what it means to guard the harvest. Their movement comes from dialogue I had with each dancer about land ownership, food justice, the Middle East and spiritual discipline. The tree became a powerful symbol for home, body and community. It is a hearth without walls, a renewable source of food, and a place where we can talk. We talked a lot about place. Where will all the children in the refugee camps go? If one becomes permanent, must another become temporary? IN THIS EPISODE: A group of friends immerse themselves in libations before heading to a séance at a pub – and no one takes it seriously… until they have reason. (Noggin’s Pub) *** A mother and daughter go camping with the Girl Scouts – but what they experienced was not part of the fun, age appropriate itinerary. (Terror at Girl Scout Camp) *** Kirk Anderson said that Joyce McKinney tied him to a bed for three days and raped him repeatedly. She said that wasn't possible. (The Case of the Manacled Mormon) *** Those interested in the paranormal likely already have heard of black eyed kids, or shadow people – but one person came across a being that inhabited the body of a co-worker – and turned the face completely black. (Was It Real?) *** If you lived in Illinois in 1977, you might have looked to the skies to see something terrifying – as Illinois was under siege by winged weirdness in the form of giant feathered fowls. (Thunderbirds Over Illinois) *** A perimeter search revealed blood stains in the yard, and bloody prints on the nearby garage. What Happened to Evelyn Hartley? (The Babysitter Who Vanished) **** A woman searches in vain for important papers, and gets a little help from a deceased grandparent. If a person was forced to choose what the greatest ghost story in Wisconsin might be, it would almost undoubtedly be the legend of Summerwind. This haunted mansion has spawned more strange tales and stories that any other location in the state. What dark secrets remain hidden in the ruins of this once grand estate? Were the stories of ghostly encounters and messages from beyond really true... or were they part of an elaborate publicity hoax? BATTLE THE DARKNESS: http://www.WeirdDarkness.com/BATTLE WEIRD DARKNESS *LIVE* ON HALLOWEEN: http://weirddarkness.com/weirdweb/1600/   IN THIS EPISODE: Was Summerwind in Wisconsin really haunted? No one knows and if they do, they aren’t saying. Today, only the foundations, the stone chimneys and perhaps the ghosts remain. (Summerwind: The Most Haunted House In Wisconsin) *** A young woman discovers that it’s possible to live a lonely life, yet still not be alone. (Followed By a Child) *** Is it possible that during the years of World War 1, Agnes Whiteland, while peering off her balcony, saw a group of time travelers? (Agnes And The Time Travelers) *** Tituba proved to be a fantastic orator as she talked her way out of slavery using the fear and mass hysteria of witchcraft that paralyzed the people of Salem. (Tituba And the Salem Witch Trials) *** The discovery of a 10-year-old's body at an ancient Roman site in Italy suggests his family, friends, and neighbors thought he was a vampire – and took measures to make sure he wouldn’t return from the grave. (The Unearthing of a Child Vampire) *** Authorities placed Gil Perez in jail as a deserter and for the possibility that he may have been in the service of Satan. In Gil’s defense though, he said he simply teleported somewhere else. For three wonderful years in the late 2000s, I lived in Abu Tor, one of the easternmost districts of West Jerusalem. It's a winding hilltop neighborhood that's home to both Jewish and Arab neighbors. On Ein Rogel Street, where I lived, people might differ on the lack of a viable peace process, or on where you can get the best falafel, but they could always agree on one thing---Ein Rogel's uncanny ability to make you feel as if you were always trudging uphill. These are some of my Ein Rogel Street stories. -Eric Orner

These are part of the fabric of war, an intrinsic property of it, and this tapestry of death infuses our history with its grim shadow. Often overshadowed by the atrocity and gloom of war there are often other bizarre stories scattered about and buried within this history, and war seems to bring about it stories of strange entities, creatures, and mysteries as well, with some of these things being just as sinister and scary as any enemy. What makes a place feel like ‘home’? How do we find our home in the world? How do we know when we are ‘home”? This short video originated in one of the first sessions of the Digital Artists Collaborative of 3200 Stories. We had spent the morning unpacking concepts of ‘place’ and ‘home’ as relates to terms like “local,” a contemporary catch word for preserving human values in the basic practices of daily life. Then we broke up into pairs and, in this case, trios, to collaborate on some expression of our ideas. Masha Kouznetsova is an artist and illustrator; Laura Weinbach a songwriter and singer; and I, primarily a writer. Our conversation wandered a bit in the vastness of possibility, and eventually zoomed in on a little story about a formless entity that yearns for a sense of home to anchor itself in time and space. Eventually it meets another entity, and they recognize one another. They find that feeling at home in the world is not a matter of finding a particular place out there, but of connection to others. Place is not the thing – but rather, being. Because they now live in relation to one another – they are home. What we created out of this idea is a fully produced song and a series of drawings that suggest what an animated film would look like. The video allows Laura’s plaintive song and Masha’s poignant sketches to “talk” to one another, hopefully drawing viewers into the dialogue.

Candice Wicks aka Antique Music is a bona fide super star. Follow her on Facebook and you will be treated with opportunities to engage with one of Oakland's most powerful vocalists as well as some real talk on the government, global issues and race politics. When you see her live, you get the sense that she is running the show. She is always impeccably dressed and mixes bold colors and accessories with a power that makes you think of Ella, Etta, Billie, and Nina combined. And that voice. Man, that voice! Candice blessed the JCCSF on September 16, 2013 with her crew Antique Naked Soul featuring Tommy 'Soulati' Shepherd, Jayme Brown and N'gala McCoy. Their set was completely a capella (look Ma, no pre-recorded beats) and built live right in front of our very eyes. Check out their self-titled debut album Antique Naked Soul out now at Bandcamp! Ariel Luckey is trying to remember what we all seem to forget: where we really come from. With his new stage play Amnesia, he tells the story of a young man who retraces his family's migration from a small village in Eastern Europe through New York's Lower East Side to Phoenix, Arizona, only to find that the violence his family fled cannot be so easily forgotten. "Inside" is a series that takes you inside the creative process. It is a space where artists tell us, in their own words, what they do and why they make what they make. Produced by Dan Wolf for 3200 Stories Special thanks to Ariel and Ryan Luckey. A rare opportunity to get inside the mind of the man who's been calling "our most important living architect."

Anthony Mordechai Tzvi Russell is the mench! A former Opera singer, he left classical singing behind to use his voice to look for the connection between the Jewish and the African American spirit. Russell, a deeply soulful man with a warm heart and a big smile, embodies both effortlessly. We were happy to bring him to The Contemporary Jewish Museum to perform for our Cubicle Concert series in 2013. Special thanks to Leah Greenberg for being our host. ----------------------------- Can your workspace ever be the same once something magical has transformed it? What can 21st century artists ‘take’ from the Jewish tradition that might enrich their creative process? This was the question posed to a group of Bay Area artists and creative thinkers at the January 12, 2015 session of the Digital Artists Collaborative (DAC) at the JCCSF. Jewish Educator Rachel Brodie offered the Judaic practice of “midrash” as a dynamic model to consider. In Judaism, midrash is the ongoing process by which people seek understanding of the Old Testament and other important texts (Tanakh), one which presupposes an interaction between the written words and the readers, between ideas and interpretation, between the mystery of texts and the individual quest for present meaning. The story we examined as a group was the Biblical account of the Tower of Babel. How many ways could we look at it? Just about as many ways as there were people in the room. We gave participants about four hours to pair up and create an “interpretation” in the form of a 15 second video. The following video “concept” was created by writer Laura Paull and visual artist Daniel Buchwald. About the Digital Artist Collaboration: Sponsored by 3200 Stories, the DAC brings together a diverse group of artists and creative thinkers to wrestle with big Jewish questions through the creation and distribution of original digital content. Grounded in the concept of Midrash – a classic investigative process of Jewish texts – we will meet to immerse ourselves in a variety of Jewish “texts” (audio, video, text, and image). Through the exploration of big Jewish questions, concepts, ideas, stories, themes, traditions and practices the Digital Artist Collaboration will take a “Midrashic Posture” to prompt the production of digital content that uncovers meaning by “creating”.

Sometimes the best way to get what you want is to be flexible. As a dancer, Stephanie Reisfeld is fascinated with the exploration of relationships using movement. She remembers how a major turning point for her dance career was realizing that that even during solo performances the floor is still her partner. This video piece, entitled release: a duet, explores the relationship between two partners, even when one of them is not alive. Music: "Gymnopedie No. 1" performed by Kevin MacLeod

Nestled away within the rolling foothills of the Moncayo mountain range, in the province of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain, is the tiny village of Trasmoz. The town has a long history, with its origins as a lordship dating back to the 12th century. Its colorful and turbulent past has seen it being conquered by Jaime I, king of Aragón, as well as a civil war with the nearby Veruela Abbey, and it is also known as being the temporary home of a Spanish inventor of the mop and its bucket. Over the years the population has dwindled here from around 10,000 people in its heyday to just around 62 permanent residents, and it seems like just another quaint little Spanish countryside town, but this place is remarkable as having a rather sinister past as a place of witches, pagan rituals, and black magic. I’m Darren Marlar and this is Weird Darkness. BATTLE THE DARKNESS: http://www.WeirdDarkness.com/BATTLE WEIRD DARKNESS *LIVE* ON HALLOWEEN: http://weirddarkness.com/weirdweb/1600/ IN THIS EPISODE: When Jeffrey Dampier won the lottery, he thought he finally had it all. Little did he know that someone was about to take everything from him. (No Good Deed Goes Unpunished) *** They found Annie stretched out on the floor with a pistol lying by her hand. There was no sign of a struggle and nothing had been taken; they could only conclude that Annie had taken her own life. But is that really what happened? (The Annie Dorman Mystery) *** When you think of seeing a ghost, you almost automatically envision an ethereal being, in flowing white – like that of a woman in a wedding dress. And that might make sense, seeing as there are a lot of dead brides-to-be floating around America. (Til Death: Ghost Brides of the United States) *** You’ve seen them on the outside of large gothic buildings and massive churches. Their stone faces and menacing presence can be unsettling to some. But what are the purpose of gargoyles? (In The Protection of Gargoyles) *** Were Betty and Barney Hill actually visited and even abducted by aliens in 1961, or was it an outlandish story just to get attention? (The Betty and Barney Hill Abduction) *** The village of Trasmoz in Spain is said to be cursed by witches. Could there be a truth in the lore? Journalist Andrew Solomon kept a capacity crowd rapt in attention as he discussed his book, "Far From The Tree," a series of stories compiled from thousands of hours of interviews with parents of children with differences. An emotional evening, to be sure, as we all learned that love, humanity and compassion triumph over challenges and adversities.

"Not Permanent" is produced for the video installation "we are not permanent but we are not temporary" a series of four videos exploring Sukkot's core themes: impermanence of life, searching and wandering for a place to call home, and the welcoming of strangers. Daniel Boulud may have been born in Lyon, France, but he was become a truly great American chef. He describes himself as "an American chef with a French soul." Daniel peppered his conversation with Lucky Peach editor-in-chief Chris Ying with stories of legendary chefs and delicious dishes. His new book Daniel: My French Cuisine shares his signature recipes from his flagship restaurant Daniel, but also has recipes for the home chef. But my favorite part of the book is Boulud's collaboration with Bill Buford, (bestselling author of Heat), who has written narratives of the history and preparation of ten iconic French Recipes such as Pot au Feu Royale, Duck a La Presse, and Sole Normande. As Daniel described these rarely prepared dishes, his excitement was palpable, was truly special insight into the mind of a master.
