On March 19, Simon Schama was joined onstage by Adam Hochschild to talk about The Story of the Jews, Mr. Schama's multimedia account of Jewish history from 1000 BCE to present times. He also showed clips from the five-part PBS documentary series. Although Judaism is the only religion that commands us to remember for future generations, Mr. Schama is determined to portray Jewish history not as a history of suffering or Jews as a people apart. It was an entertaining evening with two charming intellectuals on subjects usually discussed reverentially. George Saunders and Karen Russell shared the stage for the first time on January 16th at the JCCSF. Judson True did a superb job moderating the discussion which ranged from creative process and writing styles, to when they decided they wanted to be writers, teaching, and family. Some profound insights from the master Saunders and ethereal quotes from the delightful and delighted Russell.

Author, humorist and radio host of A Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor stood on Kanbar stage on November 7 and shared stories through his new collection of original poems, O, What a Luxury. His performance was much like an hour of stand-up, though it felt less rehearsed, which added to its charm. He included some sweet bits about why he loves San Francisco and some amusing vignettes on his life, and the long road to writing this collection. Interspersed throughout, he recited poems, including one on the joy of urination and fatherhood. It felt very much like a full circle moment for him. A joy.

Bob Saget charmed a multi-generational audience with tales of his life and career, ranging from his time on "Full House" and "America's Funniest Home Videos" to his cameo appearances in "Entourage" and his stand-up specials. While the crowd braced itself for his well-known profanity, he mostly kept it in check, explaining that, "it wouldn't be appropriate in this context." This kind of restraint, from the man who titled his memoir Dirty Daddy, gave insight into the man behind the potty mouth-- a kind, thoughtful, smart-- yes-- family man.

Take two men with the gift of gab, a hot book on a controversial topic, put them in front of a sold out audience, and what do you get? One fabulous evening! Yes, Michael Krasny gave one of his best interviews on Tuesday, Oct. 1 when he sat down with Reza Aslan to discuss Reza's superb new book ZEALOT. Michael was in his element: relaxed, funny, and charming as could be. And Reza Aslan is on top of the world right now -- and the NYT bestseller list. In addition to the book, and why they think it has sparked so much controversy -- and why now, they discussed middle east politics and Iran.

The JCCSF kicked off the 2013-14 season with the wondrous Junot Diaz in conversation with Sean San Jose. Junot and Sean have known each other a long time and their friendship and mutual admiration set a really comfortable tone as soon as they sat down on the stage. It was not a one-off conversation, but something that felt like an ongoing, evolving dialogue between two artists about their passions, struggles, and the particulars of bearing witness through art. Junot Diaz has some incredibly profound things to say about immigration as a "normative traumatic experience". I also loved what he had to say about the connected short story as an art form, and how he thinks it is more true to life (and love) than the novel.

How did the ancient civilization of Sumer first develop the concept of the written word? It all began with simple warehouse tallies in the temples, but as the scribes sought more simple ways to record information, those tallies gradually evolved from pictograms into cuneiform text which could be used to convey complex, abstract, or even lyrical ideas. The temples which kept people together were not only religious places, but also warehouses which stored the community's collective wealth until it was needed to get through lean years. As the donations came in, scribes would count the items and draw pictures of them on clay tablets. The images quickly became abstract as the scribes needed to rush, and they also morphed to represent not just an image but the word itself - more specifically, the sound of the word, which meant that it could also be written to represent other words that sounded similar (homophones). Sumerian language often put words together to express new ideas, and the same concept applied to their writing. As people came to use this system more, the scribes began to write from left to right instead of top to bottom since they were less likely to mess up their clay tablets that way. Those who read the tablets didn't appreciate this change, so the scribes rotated the words 90 degrees allowing tablets to be rotated if the reader preferred - but this made the images even more abstract, until eventually the pictograms vanished entirely to be replaced by wedge-shaped stylus marks: cuneiform. Many of Sumer's neighbors adopted this invention and helped it spread throughout the region, though completely different writing systems developed independently in cultures situated in places like China and South America! ____________ ♪ Get the intro music here! http://bit.ly/1EQA5N7 *Music by Demetori: http://bit.ly/1AaJG4H ♪ Get the outro music here! http://bit.ly/23isQfx *Music by Sean and Dean Kiner: http://bit.ly/1WdBhnm

Christian Cagigal has been on my radar for a while so when my co-producer Ariel Dovas from Baycat suggested we book him for a Cubicle Concert I jumped at the opportunity. His performances mix theater, history, storytelling, audience participation and, of course, magic to envelop you in a thick San Francisco fog that leaves you wondering where the trick ends and the "slightly creepy" begins. A darling on the indie and fringe theater scene, Christians' keen sense of humor and attention to detail propel the craft of magic, and performance, into the 21st Century while respecting the masters who came before. Christian visited us on October 4, 2013 for an intimate performance involving four unsuspecting victims, er, audience members. Perfect for the season, as summer air turns to fall, Christian brought his three creepiest stories to share. Special thanks to Jeannine Luna and Susan Kirschenbaum for letting us take over their office space. We saged when we were done. We promise! Enjoy! http://www.christiancagigal.com/ ----------------------------- Can your workspace ever be the same once something magical has transformed it? That is the question at the heart of the Cubicle Concerts, an on-line performing arts series that turns workspaces into performance venues. It is an opportunity for artists and audiences to re-imagine what a performance space can be. It is an oasis for anyone working to make this world a more creative place. Cubicle Concerts is produced in partnership with BAYCAT (Bayview Center for Arts and Technology), a non-profit community media producer that educates, empowers and employs underserved youth and adults in the digital media arts. Together we collaborate to create opportunities for artists, performers and filmmakers to hone their craft and support the expression of contemporary art forms in unique, new ways. ----------------------------- Created by Dan Wolf Produced by Dan Wolf, Ariel Dovas & Jose Alfaro Camera: Jose Alfaro, Ariel Dovas & Edgar Garcia Gaffer: Joseph Roland Assistant Director: Liz Salinas Editing: Alvaro Lacayo Theme: Jason Valerio ----------------------------- Cubicle Concerts is a collaboration between 3200 Stories, a publication of the JCCSF's Maurice Kanbar Center for Media and Technology, and BAYCAT: Bayview Hunters Point Center for Arts and Technology.

*Advertise on Weird Darkness; visit http://www.bgadgroup.com or call 770-874-3200.* The iconic Dutch Colonial style building at 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, is best known today for the extraordinary account of a haunting at the house in 1976. The Amityville Horror, as it was soon known, became one of the most famous incidents of paranormal activity ever recorded. It would inspire a book and a successful series of Hollywood films. The account of the young Lutz family being tormented by demonic pigs, plagues of flies and green slime oozing from the walls terrified readers and moviegoers, all the more so because it was labelled as a true story. One surprisingly little-known fact about the Amityville Horror is that it was an admitted hoax. George Lutz and his wife Kathy invented the haunting with the help of lawyer and literary agent William Weber. But the paranormal version obscures a very real horror, one far more frightening and mysterious than the fanciful tales of poltergeists Hollywood gave the world. Because in the same house, less than 2 years earlier, one of the strangest and most baffling mass murders in recent history occurred. And the true events may not be the story you are familiar with. IN THIS EPISODE: We’ve all heard of the Headless Horseman – but Sleepy Hollow's lesser-known ghost will terrify you all the more. (The Bronze Lady of Sleepy Hollow) *** Theodore Roosevelt was so tough, that during one of his speeches he was shot in the chest – but still kept going until his speech was over. And then there was Alice, his daughter – who may have been even tougher than Teddy! (A Bullet And a Voodoo Doll) *** An icy cold hand caresses a girl in the middle of the night. (A Comfort) *** For most people, spotting a UFO would be considered extremely unusual, but for two Ohio women, seeing a UFO was the least surprising part of their experience. (UFOs And Time Distortions) *** Was there another gunman in the notorious Amityville House murders? (The Defeo Family Massacre) EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS… Depressed? Who better to draw out Frank Gehry, "starchitect" of The Guggenheim in Bilbao and L.A.'s Disney Center, than his Pulitzer Prize winning biographer and architecture critic Paul Goldberger. A rare opportunity to get inside the mind of the man who's been calling "our most important living architect."

What can 21st century artists ‘take’ from the Jewish tradition that might enrich their creative process? This was the question posed to a group of Bay Area artists and creative thinkers at the January 12, 2015 session of the Digital Artists Collaborative (DAC) at the JCCSF. Jewish Educator Rachel Brodie offered the Judaic practice of “midrash” as a dynamic model to consider. In Judaism, midrash is the ongoing process by which people seek understanding of the Old Testament and other important texts (Tanakh), one which presupposes an interaction between the written words and the readers, between ideas and interpretation, between the mystery of texts and the individual quest for present meaning. The story we examined as a group was the Biblical account of the Tower of Babel. How many ways could we look at it? Just about as many ways as there were people in the room. We gave participants about four hours to pair up and create an “interpretation” in the form of a 15 second video. The following video “concept” was created by writer Laura Paull and visual artist Daniel Buchwald. About the Digital Artist Collaboration: Sponsored by 3200 Stories, the DAC brings together a diverse group of artists and creative thinkers to wrestle with big Jewish questions through the creation and distribution of original digital content. Grounded in the concept of Midrash – a classic investigative process of Jewish texts – we will meet to immerse ourselves in a variety of Jewish “texts” (audio, video, text, and image). Through the exploration of big Jewish questions, concepts, ideas, stories, themes, traditions and practices the Digital Artist Collaboration will take a “Midrashic Posture” to prompt the production of digital content that uncovers meaning by “creating”.

Candice Wicks aka Antique Music is a bona fide super star. Follow her on Facebook and you will be treated with opportunities to engage with one of Oakland's most powerful vocalists as well as some real talk on the government, global issues and race politics. When you see her live, you get the sense that she is running the show. She is always impeccably dressed and mixes bold colors and accessories with a power that makes you think of Ella, Etta, Billie, and Nina combined. And that voice. Man, that voice! Candice blessed the JCCSF on September 16, 2013 with her crew Antique Naked Soul featuring Tommy 'Soulati' Shepherd, Jayme Brown and N'gala McCoy. Their set was completely a capella (look Ma, no pre-recorded beats) and built live right in front of our very eyes. Check out their self-titled debut album Antique Naked Soul out now at Bandcamp! Act now before you miss the opportunity to bask in one of the Bay Area's finest. http://antique.bandcamp.com/ ----------------------------- Can your workspace ever be the same once something magical has transformed it? Journalist Andrew Solomon kept a capacity crowd rapt in attention as he discussed his book, "Far From The Tree," a series of stories compiled from thousands of hours of interviews with parents of children with differences. An emotional evening, to be sure, as we all learned that love, humanity and compassion triumph over challenges and adversities.

Ariel Luckey is trying to remember what we all seem to forget: where we really come from. With his new stage play Amnesia, he tells the story of a young man who retraces his family's migration from a small village in Eastern Europe through New York's Lower East Side to Phoenix, Arizona, only to find that the violence his family fled cannot be so easily forgotten. "Inside" is a series that takes you inside the creative process. It is a space where artists tell us, in their own words, what they do and why they make what they make. Produced by Dan Wolf for 3200 Stories Special thanks to Ariel and Ryan Luckey. Since this module is about stories, I thought it was important to share a story with you that means a lot to me. I hope this will help you think about the power of sharing stories with children, particularly as ways to inspire students and move them towards taking action in their world. These ideas also connect to the Tyson article ("Shut My Mouth Wide Open") you're reading in this module.

Sometimes the best way to get what you want is to be flexible. As a dancer, Stephanie Reisfeld is fascinated with the exploration of relationships using movement. She remembers how a major turning point for her dance career was realizing that that even during solo performances the floor is still her partner. This video piece, entitled release: a duet, explores the relationship between two partners, even when one of them is not alive. Music: "Gymnopedie No. 1" performed by Kevin MacLeod
