Author, humorist and radio host of A Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor stood on Kanbar stage on November 7 and shared stories through his new collection of original poems, O, What a Luxury. His performance was much like an hour of stand-up, though it felt less rehearsed, which added to its charm. He included some sweet bits about why he loves San Francisco and some amusing vignettes on his life, and the long road to writing this collection. Interspersed throughout, he recited poems, including one on the joy of urination and fatherhood. It felt very much like a full circle moment for him. A joy.

Bob Saget charmed a multi-generational audience with tales of his life and career, ranging from his time on "Full House" and "America's Funniest Home Videos" to his cameo appearances in "Entourage" and his stand-up specials. While the crowd braced itself for his well-known profanity, he mostly kept it in check, explaining that, "it wouldn't be appropriate in this context." This kind of restraint, from the man who titled his memoir Dirty Daddy, gave insight into the man behind the potty mouth-- a kind, thoughtful, smart-- yes-- family man.

"Un/Guarding The Harvest" is produced for the video installation "we are not permanent but we are not temporary" a series of four videos exploring Sukkot's core themes: impermanence of life, searching and wandering for a place to call home, and the welcoming of strangers. Featuring choreography by Nina Haft in collaboration with dancers Peiling Kao, Frances Sedayao, Anthony 'AnTz' Johnson, Justin Sharlman, Krystal Bates and Shawn Hawkins. Artist Statement For this video project, I invited several of my own Ushpizin (exalted guests/artists) to join me in considering what it means to guard the harvest. Their movement comes from dialogue I had with each dancer about land ownership, food justice, the Middle East and spiritual discipline. The tree became a powerful symbol for home, body and community. It is a hearth without walls, a renewable source of food, and a place where we can talk. We talked a lot about place. Where will all the children in the refugee camps go? If one becomes permanent, must another become temporary? On March 19, Simon Schama was joined onstage by Adam Hochschild to talk about The Story of the Jews, Mr. Schama's multimedia account of Jewish history from 1000 BCE to present times. He also showed clips from the five-part PBS documentary series. Although Judaism is the only religion that commands us to remember for future generations, Mr. Schama is determined to portray Jewish history not as a history of suffering or Jews as a people apart. It was an entertaining evening with two charming intellectuals on subjects usually discussed reverentially. What makes a place feel like ‘home’? How do we find our home in the world? How do we know when we are ‘home”? This short video originated in one of the first sessions of the Digital Artists Collaborative of 3200 Stories. We had spent the morning unpacking concepts of ‘place’ and ‘home’ as relates to terms like “local,” a contemporary catch word for preserving human values in the basic practices of daily life. Then we broke up into pairs and, in this case, trios, to collaborate on some expression of our ideas. Masha Kouznetsova is an artist and illustrator; Laura Weinbach a songwriter and singer; and I, primarily a writer. Our conversation wandered a bit in the vastness of possibility, and eventually zoomed in on a little story about a formless entity that yearns for a sense of home to anchor itself in time and space. Eventually it meets another entity, and they recognize one another. They find that feeling at home in the world is not a matter of finding a particular place out there, but of connection to others. Place is not the thing – but rather, being. Because they now live in relation to one another – they are home. What we created out of this idea is a fully produced song and a series of drawings that suggest what an animated film would look like. The video allows Laura’s plaintive song and Masha’s poignant sketches to “talk” to one another, hopefully drawing viewers into the dialogue.

Christian Cagigal has been on my radar for a while so when my co-producer Ariel Dovas from Baycat suggested we book him for a Cubicle Concert I jumped at the opportunity. His performances mix theater, history, storytelling, audience participation and, of course, magic to envelop you in a thick San Francisco fog that leaves you wondering where the trick ends and the "slightly creepy" begins. A darling on the indie and fringe theater scene, Christians' keen sense of humor and attention to detail propel the craft of magic, and performance, into the 21st Century while respecting the masters who came before. Christian visited us on October 4, 2013 for an intimate performance involving four unsuspecting victims, er, audience members. Perfect for the season, as summer air turns to fall, Christian brought his three creepiest stories to share. Special thanks to Jeannine Luna and Susan Kirschenbaum for letting us take over their office space. We saged when we were done. We promise! Enjoy! http://www.christiancagigal.com/ ----------------------------- Can your workspace ever be the same once something magical has transformed it? That is the question at the heart of the Cubicle Concerts, an on-line performing arts series that turns workspaces into performance venues. It is an opportunity for artists and audiences to re-imagine what a performance space can be. It is an oasis for anyone working to make this world a more creative place. Cubicle Concerts is produced in partnership with BAYCAT (Bayview Center for Arts and Technology), a non-profit community media producer that educates, empowers and employs underserved youth and adults in the digital media arts. Together we collaborate to create opportunities for artists, performers and filmmakers to hone their craft and support the expression of contemporary art forms in unique, new ways. ----------------------------- Created by Dan Wolf Produced by Dan Wolf, Ariel Dovas & Jose Alfaro Camera: Jose Alfaro, Ariel Dovas & Edgar Garcia Gaffer: Joseph Roland Assistant Director: Liz Salinas Editing: Alvaro Lacayo Theme: Jason Valerio ----------------------------- Cubicle Concerts is a collaboration between 3200 Stories, a publication of the JCCSF's Maurice Kanbar Center for Media and Technology, and BAYCAT: Bayview Hunters Point Center for Arts and Technology.

George Saunders and Karen Russell shared the stage for the first time on January 16th at the JCCSF. Judson True did a superb job moderating the discussion which ranged from creative process and writing styles, to when they decided they wanted to be writers, teaching, and family. Some profound insights from the master Saunders and ethereal quotes from the delightful and delighted Russell.

For three wonderful years in the late 2000s, I lived in Abu Tor, one of the easternmost districts of West Jerusalem. It's a winding hilltop neighborhood that's home to both Jewish and Arab neighbors. On Ein Rogel Street, where I lived, people might differ on the lack of a viable peace process, or on where you can get the best falafel, but they could always agree on one thing---Ein Rogel's uncanny ability to make you feel as if you were always trudging uphill. These are some of my Ein Rogel Street stories. -Eric Orner

In this Ocean Story, MBARI Senior Scientist Kelly Benoit Bird talks about her research on the mesopelagic zone – the part of the ocean that extends from ~650 to 3200 feet below the surface. Benoit-Bird uses specialized sonar to study the schooling behavior of small animals such as anchovies, as well as the foraging behavior of larger marine predators such as dolphins and seabirds. She has pioneered the use of sonar devices on underwater robots that dive deep below the surface to get extremely detailed views of predator-prey interactions in the wild. Sometimes the best way to get what you want is to be flexible. As a dancer, Stephanie Reisfeld is fascinated with the exploration of relationships using movement. She remembers how a major turning point for her dance career was realizing that that even during solo performances the floor is still her partner. This video piece, entitled release: a duet, explores the relationship between two partners, even when one of them is not alive. Music: "Gymnopedie No. 1" performed by Kevin MacLeod

We are all more than familiar with haunted houses – where resident spirits reside. These ghosts or poltergeists may be playful or sinister. They may remove objects from the home, only to replace in a different location – or the item may be lost forever in the space between here and the afterlife. But it’s not only small objects that are lost. You beloved pet dog may go chasing into the forest after an invisible stranger, never to come out again. Your cat may scamper away in terror at the site of absolutely nothing – and vanish from existence, not a whisker to be found. Of course, we also see on the news people – adults and children – simply vanishing off the face of the earth. No clues whatsoever as to what happened to them. But when is the last time you heard of an entire home vanishing without a trace? I’m not speaking of the occupants of the home – I’m referring to the actual home itself. The brick, mortar and wood house – completely gone, seemingly overnight, with no explanation. It’s hard to believe, but it happens – and more often that you can possibly imagine. Sometimes the homes return; sometimes they don’t. IN THIS EPISODE: Did a Bigfoot like monster stalk the marshes of Fouke, Arkansas, in the 1970s? Is the claim that the monster in the film “Legend of Boggy Creek” based on real evidence? We’ll find out. (The Fouke Monster of Boggy Creek) *** Homes… houses… vanishing without a trace. Sometimes they return, other times they don’t. What is behind this bizarre phenomenon? (Mysterious Disappearing Phantom Houses) *** Anyone can see a monster – even someone who believes in God – and you can even get a visit immediately after your bedtime prayers. (Red And Toothy) *** Amelia Dyer began as a loving caregiver of children – but later would be rumored to be responsible for the deaths of 400 children. (The Ogress of Reading) *** The parents leaving town, a teenager in the house alone… what could possibly go wrong? (When The Parents Are Away, The Devil Will Play) *** Now.. bolt your doors, lock your windows, turn off your lights, and come with me into the Weird Darkness! Ariel Luckey is trying to remember what we all seem to forget: where we really come from. With his new stage play Amnesia, he tells the story of a young man who retraces his family's migration from a small village in Eastern Europe through New York's Lower East Side to Phoenix, Arizona, only to find that the violence his family fled cannot be so easily forgotten. "Inside" is a series that takes you inside the creative process. It is a space where artists tell us, in their own words, what they do and why they make what they make. She is always impeccably dressed and mixes bold colors and accessories with a power that makes you think of Ella, Etta, Billie, and Nina combined. And that voice. Man, that voice! Candice blessed the JCCSF on September 16, 2013 with her crew Antique Naked Soul featuring Tommy 'Soulati' Shepherd, Jayme Brown and N'gala McCoy. Their set was completely a capella (look Ma, no pre-recorded beats) and built live right in front of our very eyes. Check out their self-titled debut album Antique Naked Soul out now at Bandcamp! Act now before you miss the opportunity to bask in one of the Bay Area's finest. http://antique.bandcamp.com/ ----------------------------- Can your workspace ever be the same once something magical has transformed it? Meghan Vogel, a West Liberty-Salem runner helps carry a struggling Arlington runner who collapsed just short of the finish line at the DIII 3200 meter race at the OHSAA state track meet at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus on June 2, 2012. The West Liberty-Salem athlete finished first in the 1600 meter race earlier in the day. She was running in last place in the 3200 meter race when she approached her opponent struggling to pick herself up from the track on the home stretch. Without hesitation, she scooped her competitor up and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. As the crowd roared, the incredible sportsmanship continued to the finish line.

(The Ultimate Monstrous Thought-Form) No one really thinks about it, but cops are usually one of the most credible witnesses to paranormal phenomena. Police officers are trained observers and usually will make better witnesses than a civilian. But even our brave men and women in blue can be terrified into a shade of white. (Police and the Paranormal)A bizarre phenomenon that manages to teeter where the lines of Bigfoot, Werewolves, the paranormal, and urban legend intersect, takes things deeper into the strange with various reports that suggest these beings utilize the mental power of telepathy as well. We’ll look into some of the creepy encounters with the Dogman. Anthony Mordechai Tzvi Russell is the mench! A former Opera singer, he left classical singing behind to use his voice to look for the connection between the Jewish and the African American spirit. Russell, a deeply soulful man with a warm heart and a big smile, embodies both effortlessly. We were happy to bring him to The Contemporary Jewish Museum to perform for our Cubicle Concert series in 2013. Special thanks to Leah Greenberg for being our host. ----------------------------- Can your workspace ever be the same once something magical has transformed it? Angelique Kidjo delighted a sold out crowd with stories from her childhood Benin, growing up with strong parental role models, and passing on the spirit and values instilled by her parents through her music and advocacy work as a UN ambassador in Africa. John Santos served as interviewer and then joined Kidjo and her guitarist Dominic James for the set. It was pure joy to see them perform together. Everyone was on their feet.
