Ways to Become Stress-Free in 7 Minutes stress-free | Definition of stress-free in English by Oxford Dictionaries 6 Here are a few ways that I have become a much happier person by living a stress-free life. We all have different triggers that leads to stress, as well as different reactions to that stress. Some of us get anxious, others shut down, and many get angry. Certainly these three reactions are only a mere drop in the ocean of reactions that people have to stress. There are people who get so worked up over stressful events or feelings that they make themselves physically ill. The thing is, it doesn't have to like that. Changing your personal reaction to stress is easy to say, but not as easy to do (as is the case with most things in life). However, when you feel like you're going to succumb to stress (or you are already there), here are 14 tricks that you can begin to practice and use to calm yourself down in just five minutes. 1. Smile. "Age-old adages, such as 'grin and bear it,' have suggested smiling to be not only an important nonverbal indicator of happiness but also wishfully promote smiling as a panacea for life's stressful events," says researcher Tara Kraft. The research conducted by Kraft did in fact find that simply smiling did reduce stress. "The next time you are stuck in traffic or are experiencing some other type of stress, you might try to hold your face in a smile for a moment," said Sarah Pressman, one of the researchers. "Not only will it help you 'grin and bear it' psychologically, but it might actually help your heart health as well." ADVERTISING inRead invented by Teads 2. Breathe deeply. Another simple tactic to get rid of that stress? Breathe. Deep breathing helps us disengage from distracting thoughts and sensations, which makes the body feel like it does when it's relaxed. To practice this technique, find a quiet and comfy area and then breathe normally. Then begin to breathe in slowly through your nose, so that your chest and lower belly rise. Next, let your abdomen expand fully and breathe out slowly. The key to this type of breathing seems to be to let the breath come out longer than it takes your large breath to come in. Take more time in the out breath. 3. Chew gum. Andrew Scholey, a professor of behavioral and brain sciences at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia, found that that chewing gum helped relieve anxiety, improve alertness, and reduce stress by 16 percent during mild stress and nearly 12 percent in moderate stress. 4. Change your passwords. This is actually a form of priming, which basically means that you use cues in your environment to help you act in a desired way. For example, this was a guy who changed his password to "Forgive@h3r" to help him get over his anger following his divorce. Other suggestions may be "Ilovemywork" and "Ilikemymotherinlaw." (You get the idea.) 5. Meditate or stretch. Meditation and stretching are both tried-and-true tactics to help you relieve stress. Both are incredibly simple to do no matter where you where. Simply close your eyes, focus on your breathing, and concentrate on your current state. Or, simply stretch your limbs for a moment. This suggestion fits in somewhat with the "exercise" category, and so these methods are often ignored -- just as exercise is ignored. However, it is much easier and faster to take a stretch in the bathroom stall at work than to hit the gym. 6. Call a friend or mom. Whenever you're stressed out, pick up the phone and vent to your bestie. Or, better yet, give your mom a call. According to a study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, those who chatted with mom reduced a key stress hormone and also released oxytocin. 7. Visualize. Here's another simple technique that you can do anywhere whenever you feel overwhelmed. Just make yourself comfortable, close your eyes, and think about your happy place, like the beach. You can even visualize accomplishing a future goal to help your relax. Scientists have proven that we form our first impression about someone within the first 7 seconds of meeting them, and 55% of the first impression is based on appearance. Pay attention to 12 common things you should avoid not to ruin the first impression. In his research, psychologist William F. Chaplin found that people with a weak handshake are instantly judged as being shy, anxious, uninterested, or even completely incompetent. The irony is, a lot of times what we feel is rooted in the lower back is actually caused by muscles not in the back at all. In this video, I’m going to show you how the glute medius could be the real cause of your back pain and a quick exercise you can do to relieve your discomfort instantly. Once gone, I’m also going to show you a few additional exercises you can do to make sure your low back pain never returns. The gluteus medius is sandwiched between the glute maximus and minimus and lies in and around the hip area. The role of the muscle is to abduct your hip or lift your leg out to the side in either standing or side lying and to keep your pelvis level whenever you take a step. Prolonged sitting during the day as well as an unequal weight distribution when standing are two of the most common reasons for this muscle to get weak and imbalanced. You can quickly test to see if you have the makings of a weak glute medius by standing with your feet shoulder width apart and lifting one foot off the ground. First take note whether or not your opposite hip drops significantly. If it does, this would indicate a glute weakness on that side. You would repeat with the opposite foot as well. When you do this you would also want to see if you had to dramatically shift your weight to one side just to lift that foot off the ground. If you do, this would indicate that you have an unequal weight distribution when standing and it would be especially troublesome when squatting. To fix this quickly, you will want to lay down on the ground with your affected side on top. If your right lower back was bothering you then you would want to lie on your left hip. From here, take your thumb and place it on the area most sore. You should feel that this is going to happen just to the outside of the bony prominence of your pelvis. From here, push to hold back the trigger point and start flossing your leg down and in front of you and then back and up. Your hip should be extended and then lifted into abduction towards the ceiling (being sure to point the toes down to keep the glute medius in focus). Do this about 10 times until you feel the tension in the muscle release. Now, you can burn out the spasm in the trigger point by getting into the fully contracted position of the glute medius muscle and holding as long as you can. Generally, because this muscle is often very weak, this may not be any longer than 30 seconds to a minute. Once you cannot hold it any more you will stand up and you should notice an immediate relief of the pain on that side. This is the quick but not permanent fix for this problem. Since the underlying cause is weakness in the gluteus medius muscle you will want to back this up with some exercises for your low back that you can do a few times a week. I show you three options for this. The first is the hip bump against the wall. The second is called the sack swinger, and can be done with a dog leash if you don’t have a formal dip belt. The last is actually doing the same movement that you did for the treatment, but this time as a strengthening exercise for your low back. Whatever you do, just be sure you are consistent. You will also see that as you relieve the tension in this muscle that your squat performance improves as well. Your depth should be increased and any low back pain that you felt by doing the exercise should be gone since you will now be able to do them with equal force through each leg. Yeah, neither does anyone else. We are perpetual thinkers. It’s a non-stop habit! You generate about 70.000 thoughts per day. What are these thoughts all about? Are they helping you live the life you want to live?Or are they making you feel less about yourself and others? Today we find out how you can stop overthinking – and finally get your mind on your side. FIRST. It begins with awareness, you must actually become aware of what is going on inside your head. And that sounds simple enough, but many of us never even realise that there’s some negative stuff happening up there, and instead we choose to act like everything is Ok. Are you overthinking, are you think negatively? WELL ADMIT IT. Because otherwise you won’t change a thing… But when you actually make it clear to yourself that you don’t like what’s going on, and you begin to be aware of it, now you can start to make a real change. You can keep a thought journal, writing down your thoughts as they come up, at least the more noticeable ones. Even if they’re negative, it’ll help you to start to get an overview of what’s happening in your mind, and after this it’ll be much easier to make the changes you want to make, because you’ll know what’s going on. SECOND. Use meditation. Yes, USE IT. Not ‘meditate because it’s good for you and you should’ – meditate because it’ll actually help you get what you want. When you train your mind with a simple technique like focusing on your breathing for 10 mins per day, and pulling it back every time it gets distracted, you gain power over it. Understand that if you do not train your mind, it is guaranteed to run wild on you, like a crazy chimp it’ll mess up your state of mind and in the end even your life. So control it. Use meditation, because it works. Do not be discouraged if you cannot stay focused in the beginning, simply stay disciplined and continue to practice. This is one of the very best and most effective ways to beat overthinking, and it will absolutely work for you. Another way that you can train your mind quickly is by really focusing on the daily tasks that you are doing, being fully present and aware as you are doing them, and not get caught up by the noise in your head. When you’re walking outside, breathe the air and pay attention to your environment. Don’t let yourself walk around unconsciously and stuck in your own head. Even if you’re doing something as simple as watching a video, actually watch the video, and tune out the noise going on upstairs in the mind. We get so used to our daily activities after a while that you may notice you’re thinking constantly, even if you used to do it with some intense presence and focus in the past. This effect really kicks in once we’ve been doing something for a few years. THIRD. Separate yourself from your thoughts. This goes hand in hand with training your mind. The only time our thoughts can do us real harm is when we identify with them, when we begin to think that we are our thoughts. That voice in your head is exactly that, a voice. You can control it, you can shape it, and when you begin to understand this you gain massive power over it. You can use your thinking to help you be productive, but if you let it run on autopilot it is likely that your life won’t turn out to be the way you wanted. So it’s important to always steer your thoughts in the right direction. One technique that has served me extremely well over the years is that anytime I became aware of a negative thought, I would redirect it by saying “how can I change this into something that helps me?” This one simple change done on a daily basis has led me to place of close to no negative thoughts, and I came from a place of depression and anxiety. Remember that overthinking, especially if it’s negative, is actually a bad habit, so by implementing these three keys that we’ve just gone over, you’ll be able to become aware of your thoughts, begin to control them and also separate yourself from the non-stop stream that goes through your head.
