Also, human ears can differentiate millions of sound, and our eyes can discriminate about thousands of colors. I've never thought about this! - Yet the throat of a blue whale is no bigger than a saucer. Therefore, it can’t swallow anything wider than a beach ball. - An octopus has three hearts. Two of them move blood beyond its gills, while the third one keeps circulation flowing for the body organs. Three hearts – what a lucky guy! - Originally, Feng shui was the art of choosing an appropriate place for a grave. That’s right – funerals ceremonies and rituals are generally taken very seriously in Chinese culture. - Now, look at this amazing picture! This what the sky would look like if Jupiter was the same distance from the Earth as the Moon. Just wow! - How many glasses of water do you drink per day? Three? Four? Here is a surprising fact: the likelihood that the glass of water you’re drinking contains a molecule of water that once passed through a dinosaur is about 100%. - Catfish have 27,000 taste buds. And this is four times more than what human beings have – we have only 7,000 of them. - Now, what do you think this is? Any idea? This is actually what sand looks like under a microscope. - Oxford University is older than the Aztec Empire. Oxford University was found in 1096, and in the Aztec civilization – in 1325. This means that Oxford University is at least 200 years older than the Aztec Empire. - In Cyprus, Santa Claus is called Basil. He is also called Saint Basil the Great. - Round buttocks were determined by the evolution process. The main occupation of our ancestors was hunting and in order to catch the prey or at least to run fast well-built buttocks were a great thing for such a task. Why is the sky blue? Why aren’t there any more dinosaurs? Why do trees change colors? If you’ve been around kids long enough, you know the incessant barrage of questions that, as simple as they seem, often have you scratching your head. However, just because we grow up, it doesn’t mean that our curiosity about the world around us goes away. If you’re ready to finally get the answers to the random questions that lie abandoned in the back of your brain, then you’ve tuned in to the right video! TIMESTAMPS Why do you get goosebumps? 1:00 Why does your voice sound different on a recording? 1:49 Why do you get a brain freeze from cold drinks or foods? 2:39 Why does the sun darken your skin yet lighten your hair? 3:28 Why does time pass more slowly for a child? 4:08 Why don't your eyeballs get cold when it's freezing out? 5:18 Why do your eyes close when sneeze? 5:41 Why don't city pigeons perch in trees? 6:28 Why is dust white against a black backdrop and black against a white one? 7:08 Why do raccoons wash their food? 7:37 Why do birds fly in V-formations? 8:06 Why do we yawn when we’re tired? 8:48 Why does a brook babble? 9:29 Why do you get motion sickness? 9:55 Why do clock hands move circularly? 10:42 Why is the ring finger used for blood tests? 11:29 Why did pirates wear eye patches? 12:15 Why do goats have rectangular pupils? 12:57 Why do you need to sleep? 13:39 Where does toilet waste go on a plane? 14:20 SUMMARY - Goose bumps form when tiny muscles at the base of hair follicles contract. In the animal kingdom, this helps them warm up faster by standing each hair on end and creating a sort of insulation. - Other people hear the soundwaves of your voice coming only through the air, and a recording also contains just these sounds. Yet the way we hear our own voices is a combination of the regular sounds and the low-frequency sounds conducted by the bones of our skulls. - When something extremely cold touches the roof of your mouth, the nerve center located there tends to overreact. - In both cases, the sun’s UV rays break down melanin, which is the pigment responsible for the color of your hair and skin. The difference is in the fact that hair is made up of dead cells while skin cells are alive. - Kids are only starting to get acquainted with the world around them, and their memory has to collect more data. So their year contains more new and unfamiliar "events" than that of a grown-up. - The pigeons hanging out in urban areas have developed a habit of settling on the rocky landscape where there are no trees. It means they didn’t inherit the tree-perching reflex of their rural or jungle relatives. - Dust is actually gray, but the tiny size of its particles prevents us from seeing its true color. - Dust is actually gray, but the tiny size of its particles prevents us from seeing its true color. - When you sleep, it optimizes the synapses in your brain. What this means is that your memories solidify and the tidbits of information you’ve gotten throughout the day move from your short-term to your long-term memory. We seem to think we know pretty much all there is to know about our Earth that nothing can surprise us at this point. You’ll be amazed when you find out how much you have yet to learn about our home planet: let’s start with 10 little-known earthly facts. You might know that it’s called “the blue planet”, but did you know that scientists say Earth was originally a different color? Or that the Moon isn’t Earth’s only satellite? The magnetic field is vital for Earth because it protects the planet from the impact of solar winds. We think of our planet’s magnetic field as something constant and stable, but the truth is that it’s changing. James Ross, an explorer and British naval officer, pinpointed the northern magnetic pole for the first time in 1831. In 1904, Roald Amundsen, a polar regions explorer from Norway, reached the north magnetic pole again and was surprised to find that it had shifted 31 miles since Ross's discovery. Earth, despite common belief, isn't perfectly round. It’s more like a squashed sphere. So its mass is irregular and differs in various places, which causes “wobbles” of gravity in different areas of the planet. A smaller celestial body about 750 miles wide orbited Earth like a second moon. It most likely crashed into our main satellite later on. Scientists also don't rule out the probability that one day Earth will get another satellite. If all the gold found inside the Earth could be extracted, it would be enough to cover the entire surface of the planet in a 2-foot layer of gold. And if we gave everyone an equal piece, each one of Earth’s inhabitants would get 9 pounds of this treasure. Magma lurking below the surface of crater lakes emits carbon dioxide into the waters of the lakes. This carbon dioxide builds up in a thick layer at the bottom of the lakes until pressure gives way, and it’s released in an explosion. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS The Moon is probably a chunk of the Earth. 0:40 The Earth’s magnetic field is changing. 1:21 Gravity isn’t the same everywhere on the planet. 2:53 Earth had and still might have one more moon. 4:09 There are “moonquakes” on the Moon. 5:13 Our planet is covered in gold. 5:54 Earth used to be purple. 6:39 The tallest mountain on the planet isn’t what you think. 7:18 Earth has exploding lakes. 8:22 Earth is home to the most powerful volcanic eruption ever. 9:15 SUMMARY -About 4 billion years ago, a gigantic space rock the size of Mars collided with our planet. As a result, a huge chunk of the Earth broke away and later became our satellite, the Moon. -Researchers say that since the 19th century, the northern magnetic pole has shifted about 685 miles, moving northwestward across the Canadian Arctic. -One of the gravitational anomalies is found in Canada’s Hudson Bay, where gravity is much weaker than anywhere else on the planet. -Some scientists believe that our planet used to have an additional satellite that crashed into our main satellite later on. -Earthquakes on the Moon are much deeper and closer to the center of our satellite, about halfway between the surface and the core. -About 20 million tons of gold can be found inside our very own planet and in the seas. -Dr. Shil DasSarma, a microbial geneticist from the University of Maryland, thinks that ancient microbes probably didn’t use chlorophyll but other molecules to process sunlight and our planet used to be purple. -If measured from the very bottom on the ocean floor to the peak, Mauna Kea is 33,000 feet tall, making it, technically, the tallest mountain on the planet. -Nyos, Monoun, and Kivu are crater lakes in Africa that are located over volcanic earth. -The most powerful eruption ever recorded happened in April 1815 in Indonesia. It was ranked a 7 (or “super-colossal”) on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. What do you know about your body? These 17 Facts About the Human Body Will Send Chills Down Your Spine. These amazing facts may still be hard to swallow, but you will absolutely be all ears to hear about them. Did you love science at school? Let's face it, only a handful of us had the stomach for learning all the scientific stuff back then by heart. Today's topic will be easier to perceive. What is more, it will be much more exciting. We have 17 jaw-dropping facts about your body that may still be hard to swallow and digest, but you will be all ears to hear about them! #humanbody #factsaboutbody #interestingfacts TIMESTAMPS Your brain generates enough electricity to power a light bulb. 0:49 Human teeth are roughly as strong as shark teeth. 1:25 Stomach acid can make a hole in your skin. 1:59 The human hair is virtually indestructible. 2:44 Humans can create up to 7,000 different facial expressions. 3:09 Babies have over 60 more bones in their bodies than adults. 3:33 The resolution of the eye is estimated to be around 500 megapixels. 3:55 An adult's skin weighs around 17,6 pounds on average. 4:26 The human skeleton regenerates itself every 10 years. 4:52 Your eyes stay closed for about 10% of your waking hours. 5:14 Your kidneys filter all of your blood about 25 times a day. 5:45 The pink corner of our eye is the third eyelid. 6:15 The liver is capable of fully regenerating its original size. 6:39 Your heartbeat synchronizes with the rhythm of the music you are listening to. 7:05 The enzymes that are responsible for digesting the food will begin to digest the human body itself after death. 7:32 Some of the atoms in our bodies are stardust that is billions of years old. 7:44 In an average lifetime, the heart pumps around 53 million gallons of blood. 8:14 SUMMARY 17 Jaw-Dropping Facts You Didn't Know About the Human Body: - When you are awake, your brain is known to generate electricity in the amount of about 15-25 watts. This power is quite enough to keep a low-wattage LED lamp shining! - The fun part: the enamel which covers the top of your teeth is the hardest part of your whole body. - Hydrochloric acid is a typical "inhabitant" of a human stomach. This type of acid is industrial-grade and can, in fact, destroy metals! - Even the content of your bloodstreams such as vitamins, drugs, or alcohol, can be found out from a strand of hair analysis. - According to scientists, there are four main facial expressions: angry, afraid/surprised, happy, and sad. Based on these, all the rest of 7,000 expressions are performed. - Babies are born with as many as 270 bones. Later on, some of the bones start fusing together, for instance, the bones of the spine. - The resolution of the human eye is estimated to be around 500 megapixels. It makes them 72 times more precise than the rear camera of iPhone 6. - The skin weight makes lifting up another human being so difficult. Another interesting fact about your skin is that every square inch of it is covered with more than six hundred sweat glands. - You always have a blend of old and new bones in your body. - A person blinks on average 15 times a minute, though it is proved that women do it twice as often as men. - Only one percent of the blood they filter turn into the urine, the rest is redistributed throughout the body. A kidney of an adult isn't big at all, in fact, its size can be compared to that of a fist. - Humans retain a tiny fold in the inner corner of the eye. It is what is left from a membrane birds, and mammals have had for protecting the eye and sweeping out debris, at the same time providing visibility. - People who donate part of their liver to those who are in need, don't have to worry about their health. Their liver will soon regenerate the part which has been donated. - Music, especially the one that contains a continuous increase in volume or tempo, makes your heartbeat synchronize with it. - The enzymes make human organs start to digest the body. And they then team up with microbes, and the process of decomposition begins. - All plants, animals, your food, even your car contain pieces of distant stars. - This fist-sized organ beats around 115 thousand times a day and pumps 2,000 gallons of blood. In a lifetime, the number of its beats can reach 3 billion! Humans are fascinated and excited by science because we are curious creatures. We crave the answers to the things we can't understand. So here's 20 mind blowing facts that make you realize why science is so addictive. Subscribe if you want more here - https://www.youtube.com/user/TheVendor101 Google Plus - https://plus.google.com/112630119011515532019 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Thevendor101 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Vendor-101/662083050479571 Facts - 20, About 1% of static on your tv is caused by cosmic microwave background radiation left over from the Big Bang around 13.7 billion years ago. 19, There are more bacteria that live and work in one linear centimetre of your lower colon than all of the humans that have ever lived on earth. 18, The the Milky Way Galaxy has approximately 100 billion stars in it, but the Milky Way is not the only galaxy in the universe… There are thought to be more than 10 billion galaxies in the observable universe. 17, The human nose has roughly 400 types of scent receptors that can distinguish between at least a trillion different smells. 16, If we had a sufficiently precise and powerful telescope and a large enough Mirror placed at exactly the right light years away, we could watch the Apollo landings happen in real time. 15, According to astronauts space smells like seared steak, hot metal and welding fumes. The aroma that they inhale is thought to be a result of high-energy vibrations in particles brought back inside the station which have mixed with the air. 14, The world’s oceans contain 20 million tons of gold, but each litre of seawater contains, on average, about 13 billionths of a gram of gold. 13, There’s a gas cloud in the constellation of Aquila that contains enough alcohol to make 400 trillion trillion pints of beer. 12, There’s a species of jellyfish that is essentially immortal, scientists are studying them closely, with the hopes of applying what they learn to issues such as human aging and illness. 11, It takes a photon, on average, 170,000 years to travel from the core of the sun to the surface and then it takes just 8 minutes from the sun’s surface to your eyes. 10, If you removed all the empty space from the atoms that make up all the humans on Earth, the remaining mass could fit inside a sugar cube. 9, There are 328,000,000 cubic miles of seawater on earth, covering approximately 71 percent of earth's surface. But If the oceans dried out, the salt left over would cover the continents to a depth of 500 feet. 8, The Universe may have neither a centre nor an edge, because according to Einstein’s theory of relativity, gravity bends all of space time around into an endless curve. 7, Our bodies contain around 0.2 milligrams of pure gold, most of it within our blood. However you would need 40,000 people to collect enough gold to make one 8g sovereign. 6, Butterflies taste with their hind feet, A female would land on different plants, drumming the leaves with her feet to make the plant release its juices. Spines on the back of her legs have chemoreceptors that detect the right match of plant chemicals for food or to lay eggs. 5,The deepest part of any ocean in the world is the Mariana trench in the Pacific with a depth of 35,797 feet. At the bottom of the trench the water column above exerts a pressure of 1,086 bars that's15,750 psi, over 1000 times the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level. 4, There are 62,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body, if you could lay the vessels end to end they would circle the earth 2.5 times. 3, Polar Bears are nearly undetectable by infrared cameras, They are so well insulated from the cold that they become almost invisible when photographed with infrared film, which detects heat. Except for a spot in front of its mouth made by its warm breath. 2, At over 2000 kilometers long, The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth. It is a system of about 3,000 individual reefs and 900 coral islands, which are divided by narrow passages, just beneath the surface of the Coral Sea. 1, 90% of your body of mass is in fact stardust, all of the elements except hydrogen and helium are created within the stars. We learn about some awesome science in high school - like Einstein's theory of relativity, the Periodic table, and DNA replication. In no particular order, here are some mind-bendingly incredible facts that we didn't learn at high school, but wish we did. Because I certainly would have paid a whole lot more attention if my teacher had shared a few of these insights in class. Follow us on: Youtube - https://goo.gl/wK6f2Z Facebook - https://goo.gl/Ozxtf0 Google+ - https://goo.gl/LxPTU3 Instagram - https://goo.gl/2mffWD Twitter - https://goo.gl/Acks2J See more video on our channal; https://goo.gl/8f97ma 1. Water can boil and freeze at the same time Seriously, it's called the 'triple point', and it occurs when the temperature and pressure is just right for the three phases (gas, liquid, and solid) of a substance to coexist in thermodynamic equilibrium. This video shows cyclohexane in a vacuum. 2. Lasers can get trapped in a waterfall Oh my gosh, yes. Not only is this an incredible example of total internal reflection, it also shows how fibre optic cables work to guide the flow of light. 3. An egg looks like a crazy jellyfish underwater A cracked egg on land might make a big mess, but 18 metres (60 feet) below the surface of the ocean, the pressure on the egg is 2.8 times atmospheric pressure, and it holds it all together like an invisible egg shell. True story. 4. Cats always land on their feet, thanks to physics As Smarter Every Day demonstrated with this awesome slow-mo footage, cats actually use the two halves of their bodies separately to ensure rapid rotation (don't try this at home).

G'Day everyone! While our producer Bec is away on vacation, I thought I'd share these 9 Fun Science Facts with you all in the meantime! 1. The US government deleted references to climate change on many of its websites, BUT it also withdrew recommendations to floss from its website because there are so few studies backing up its effectiveness: https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/aug/02/dental-floss-proof-works-guidelines-dropped 2. Did you know that when you smell that gross sulfur smell of gas from your stove - that's not actually how natural gas smells. LP Gas actually smells like nothing. But you can imagine that if gas can be smelled and can't be seen, there would be a lot of accidental gas leaks. So the Government decided to add sulfur smell. I learned that from Burn Notice, thank you Michael Weston. 3. Did you know that blue eyes aren’t actually blue? The body doesn't have *blue* eye pigment! Blue eyes look blue for the same reason the sky looks blue - there’s particles in there that scatter light, and blue is the most “scatterable” wavelength. Green eyes are blue eyes plus a little bit of yellow pigment to make a green effect. And that also explains why many babies have blue eyes for a few weeks when they’re born, they don't have melanin yet, but when the melanin appears their eyes turn green or brown. Cray. 4. That when you use laundry detergent labeled as a "brightener," it doesn't make the clothing any cleaner or restore its color....it's actually a chemical combination that absorbs more light in the electromagnetic spectrum and re-emits fluorescent light to make the clothing appear brighter. http://mentalfloss.com/article/31061/why-does-everything-look-green-through-night-vision-goggles 5. The images on night vision goggles are green because you can see more shades and detail in green than in any other color. http://mentalfloss.com/article/31061/why-does-everything-look-green-through-night-vision-goggles 6. Pizza boxes cannot be recycled if they have any bits of pizza on them, so feel free to scrape off and eat that melted cheese people, even if it tastes a little bit like cardboard. https://lbre.stanford.edu/pssistanford-recycling/frequently-asked-questions/frequently-asked-questions-contamination 7. A cockroach can live for a week without its head. The roach only dies because without a mouth, it can't drink water and dies of thirst. http://www.pestworld.org/news-hub/pest-articles/fascinating-cockroach-facts/ 8. Bears naturally develop a 'fecal plug' in their lower intestine during hibernation to help prevent them from pooping during their 3-8 months of hibernation. Once the bear starts eating again, they literally poop out the fecal plug. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fecal_plug 9. You know how, when you die your hair, the red color fades almost immediately? That's because red dye is a really big molecule so it can't get in there and bond real easily.
