As humans, our bodies have the amazing ability to heal themselves, both physically and emotionally. We have an innate urge to heal and support one another, too; our family, our communities, our province, and beyond. At BC Children’s Hospital, doctors are built to heal their patients and their patients’ families; researchers are built to heal future generations, and our new Teck ACC has been built to heal everyone who comes through its doors. We are simply designed this way, by nature and by nurture. We are built to heal.

Meet Taylin McGill, BC Children's Hospital Champion Child for 2017 presented by Walmart. In this video, Taylin and her family describe her courageous story and what BC Children's Hospital means to them. Just 10 days after birth, Taylin was diagnosed with salmonella bacterial meningitis—a very rare and serious infection in the brain. This was followed by a diagnosis of ventriculitis, a swelling and inflammation throughout her brain, which resulted in hydrocephalus, an excessive accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid in the brain. These early infections caused scars within her brain’s ventricles—a scarring that restricted the normal flow of cerebral spinal fluid in Taylin’s brain–and caused a life-threatening situation requiring shunt surgery to relieve the pressure. Taylin’s early childhood was then marked by very long, severe seizures, and multiple surgeries. In perhaps the most trying period for the McGill family, an emergency medical situation left their fragile three-year-old Taylin in a coma-like state. She was temporarily mute, had an impairment in her left eye, and was unable to use the left side of her body for several months. Taylin suffered permanent short-term memory loss and worked hard with specialists to re-learn how to walk, talk and eat again. Taylin faced years of obstacles and by age seven, she had endured her fourteenth brain surgery. For more information on Taylin, visit bcchf.ca/taylin.

Meet Amelie Andres a strong and determined youth. When Amélie was only eight days old her future laid in the hands of skilled cardiac surgeons at BC Children's. Amélie was born with severe heart defects caused by a rare syndrome: she only had one major blood vessel coming out of her heart, instead of two, and she had holes in her heart. Defying expectations for a child with her condition, Amélie is one of the most active kids you will ever encounter. As Amélie grows she will continue to need Children's Hospital in her life. Her family is hopeful that advances in medicine will help improve her treatments as she grows, but she is well on her way to leading a long life.

Patient families and the Head of Orthopedics at BC Children's Hospital explain how the EOS Imaging machine will improve care for patients. The Orthopedics team at BC Children’s has 12,000 visits from children every year, and the vast majority of these children require some type of imaging procedure as part of their visit. Doctors use scans, such as X-rays, to monitor children’s bone and muscle growth, and to diagnose and detect problems. The EOS imaging system uses advanced technology that dramatically reduces radiation exposure, while providing more accurate full-body, three-dimensional images quickly. In less than 20 seconds, and with very limited radiation exposure, the EOS machine can acquire a whole-body image of a standing patient in a single scan. When Erin and Sean McGill reflect on the love that their daughter Taylin has added to their lives, they recall the wisdom of the late Maya Angelou. The famous poet said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said. People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Though she will struggles with the effects of bacterial meningitis – and the resulting brain and physical impairments– all her life, Taylin manages to bring people together with her charm and genial nature; as her mom Erin says, “Taylin’s such a happy kid…she just wakes up happy.” That’s a great feat, considering all that Taylin has gone through in her 13 years. Those close to her bear witness to her strength and resilience every day: Taylin has managed, time and again, to perform, think, feel and enhance the lives of others in a way that suggests she lives an inner and outer life far beyond the confines of her serious health challenges. Taylin was diagnosed with salmonella bacterial meningitis just 10 days after her birth in 2002. From the infection, Taylin contracted ventriculitis, inflamed ventricles in the brain; she was also diagnosed with hydrocephalus, an accumulation of fluid in the brain. These early infections caused blockages to the movement of cerebral spinal fluid in her brain, demanding that surgeons install insert her first shunt at just three months old to allow the fluid to communicate to move with all of the areas of Taylin's brain. Taylin had her first 70 minute seizure when she was just three years old in Whistler and was airlifted to Children's Hospital. Diagnosed with status epilepsy, Taylin continued to have seizures that endured from five to 90 minutes, every three months between the years 2005 and 2009. By the end of 2009 she had endured her 14th brain surgery. The McGills had grown to appreciate and adapt to Taylin’s abilities, cherish her sunny attitude, and are committed to helping her grow and develop every day. On November 11, 2014 Taylin, her proud and protective big sister Kheya, Erin and Sean and all of her grandparents celebrated two years without a seizure over two minutes -- a major milestone. Indeed, the young girl is definitely not who she is on paper, Erin says. The effects of meningitis have placed her in the first percentile of IQ; Taylin’s working memory is in the 0.04th percentile on the scale for kids her age. Now, 13 years old, Taylin sings in a choir and participates in gymnastics and yoga. In warm weather she swims every day in her backyard pool and plays softball with a Special Olympic team. Says Erin: “We take for granted how much she can do…we treat her like anyone else in the family and we have to remind ourselves just how far she’s come.”
