I actually wrote about this for my statement of minority fellowship when I applied to the teaching credential program at Claremont Graduate University. I got accepted but I chose to attend a Master degree at Cal Poly Pomona in math instead. Here's the last paragraph of the statement... I have high expectations for my students. I believe all students should have equal opportunity to attend college. One time, I asked my students to use one sheet of printer paper to build a bridge between two tables that were a fair distance apart. The bridge had to be strong enough to hold up a TI-89 graphing calculator. Many students doubted that this was possible. However, they were amazed after I “built” a paper bridge and put my calculator on top of it. I used this to convey to them that they all have special potential and should never underestimate themselves. I told my students that just as I believed in the strength of the bridge, I also believed in them and they should believe in themselves. My students never forgot this example.
