Fl Studio Producers (beatmakers), Sell beats on Soundclick for $20.00...Why all the hate? Seriously how does a guy devaluing his work affect your craft? If you're business crashes due to a price shift, you probably didn't have a very good business plan to start with. This is not a diss toward FL Studio users, it's a rebuttal to those who hate users of the software. In every business there is price shifts and undercuts. It's your job as a business owner to find multiple price points and streams of income to keep your business alive and money coming in for your family. http://DiyMusicBiz.Com

Music Business Tip: Producers, do you really need a manager? Things every artist, band and producer should know and consider before hiring one The most common misconception is that if you have a music manager life will be easier and you'll make more money. Sometimes it works out that way and other times it doesn't. One thing you have to remember is that a manager has to make money as well. Some of you are thinking, "that's fine, make it happen", but understand that in order for a manager to be paid, they must take a percentage of what you're making per project. This means the manager is going to have one of two things 1. Take a % from what you're charging your current clients. This could be bad because if you don't make a lot, then the manager isn't making enough and what was good pay for you is now reduced Thing about it like this. If you charge $200 per track (or whatever) and the manager steps in and handles the communications, contracts etc (making your life easier) and then takes 20% of that, you've just lost $40.00, can you afford that loss? On the other end the manager probably spent more than 3 hours coordinating with the client... is $40 worth that manager's time? 2. To make managing you worth the manager's time, they have to up your price and or find hiring pay clients. This can be both bad and good. Having hire paying client is always great because both of you are happy in the end. The problem comes when the manager get's greedy. A $500 project might be fine for you, but not enough for the manager, as they're trying to figure in their % of commission and in the end can screw up the placement - Has happened to me a few times I'm not against agents or managers, these are just some things to consider before appointing one to your day to day. Make sure you can afford them and make sure they have your best interest in mind. http://DiyMusicBiz.Com

How To Copyright Your Music (songs, beats) Easy - This is a video tutorial that walks you through the process of copyrighting your music. I show you what forms you need and how to fill them out line by line. There are a lot of bad information floating around the internet in regards to copyright. A lot of musicians and signer songwriters believe that mailing a CD of your songs to yourself and never opening it protects you. This is known as 'The Poor Man's Copyright' and no, it doesn't work. Another version of this "The Modern Poor Man's Copyright' revolves around emailing your self your songs, this way there is a track record of some sort. This doesn't work either, it won't hold up in court. In fact, you can sue anyone unless you've filed for copyright registration correctly. 5 Music libraries or companies that generate most of my tv and film placements. Definitely something producers (composers) & songwriters should look into (if you haven't already). Some of these libraries cost (I mention the ones that do), but most are free to join. It takes some time to reap the benefits (not an overnight cash machine). http://diymusicbiz.com

When should you copyright your music? This was a question I received from a reader. He's just getting started in the music licensing world, has all his tracks lined up, demos have been accepted.. Some are are in the process of being used on indie film and 1 reality TV show. The answer is as soon as possible. I would suggest copyrighting your music before sending it to anyone

Musicians & Creatives are invited to grow your business via the DIY Music Biz Mastermind : https://christianhowes.mykajabi.com/store/iNvpjGVk . Members will work closely with me to vett a brand new online course designed to help you generate more clients, gigs, projects, and income. Chances are, if you expressed interest in this it’s because you already KNOW me, at least a little bit. At least we have some friends in common, or you wouldn’t have seen my posts that just went out organically on social media and to my email list. I’m looking to develop relationships with people I know, and build the impact and reputation of my business consulting line of work based on helping you create results. That’s really my point to start, because I want you to understand that this will be a project we work on together, and I only succeed if I help you succeed. So I’m not interested in a short term result. I want to see you get some measurable success, so you’ll refer me to others later on and have good things to say about it. We’re talking here about stuff that really matters- your money, your time, your business, your career, your family. I don't take it lightly. What I’m trying to help people to do is to Accelerate and/or Change the results you are getting in your business. It takes work and commitment from my clients (you). And it takes the willingness to hear honest feedback, and the willingness to start from Taking Responsibility for your situation. That means, regardless of your situation, you need to believe that you CAN change results you’re currently getting if you find a better strategy, better tactics, better support, better efficient working style- that if you CHANGE something you're doing in your business strategy and actions, you can change your results by generating more clients, more income, more freedom, etc… If you DON'T accept this as a premise, stop reading. I only want to work with people who are ready to work. So here’s the thing: For the past 21 years I’ve grown my own business. For the past five years I’ve been working on business consulting. For the past two years I’ve coached over 100 professional musicians and figured out my coaching, whether through 1-1 consults or a mentoring group model. I know about this stuff. I can help you change your results. The newest tweak in my business model: I created a DIY Online Course as a way for people who want a LOWER Price Point, an inexpensive entry point to begin changing their businesses, increasing their skills in running a business. For an Even Lower price point, I’m asking a select few people to start with me in a BETA group. As part of the BETA group, you will get the following advantages: - Massive discount on cost of the course and lifetime access to all the future upgrades - Access to free one-time consult with me - Access to free email support from me - Discounts on access to our mentoring group and premium private coaching plans - 30-day total money back guarantee What I’ll ask from you: - A commitment to do your best to Stay engaged in the process - Give me comments on what can be improved and what’s working for you in the course - CONSIDER Providing a testimonial if and when you get value from the course Here’s what you’ll get: - Freedom of self expression In speaking and in promoting yourself - Belief in and understanding of your value - Focus - Vision - Clear course of action - Balance - Increased income - Letting go of those things that no longer serve you - Better gigs - More income - More independence Course Curriculum: - Core content- including pdf, video, audio trainings, worksheets, step by step process, templates, assessments, interactive ability to comment and get feedback, and even access to schedule a call with me. The core content will give you clear steps to clarify your goals, eliminate roadblocks, improve or create your marketing assets, create a specific action plan, and execute it. It will drill deep into detailed strategies, tactics, and resources available to further help you create results. Time Frame: The BETA Group is Launching NOW. Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana 2 Predictions Will it be Floyd Money Mayweather, the tactile precision puncher, the master at making them miss or will it be Marcos Maidana for the upset? I like Marcos Maidana because he exudes confidence, he has punching power etc, but I don't think that two months of training is going to give him the type of endurance he needs to keep up with Floyd. Mayweather on the other hand... I dunno, all he has to do is box and not get hit, which he's very good at. All he has to do is not get knocked out and smothered. Either way, let me know what you think. Vote and let's get some music placements http://diymusicbiz.com

WE'RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ - the second single off their 3rd album. A joyfully rambunctious romp through the band's true-life (mis)adventures in Popland -- a tongue-in-cheek celebration of all that's happened to these DIY musical minxes on the way from disastrously door-stepping the NME at Reading Festival to flying to a gig on LA's Hollywood Boulevard only to find no PA has been booked. Anyone thinking of starting a band should listen to this!

Why do freelance musicians applaud "arts advocacy" yet avoid taking action towards making a living? From a series of music business tutorials as part of Music Biz Mastermind. To become better at selling your music, schedule a free call with me here: https://christianhowes.com/music-biz-mastermind-testimonials/ Check out my DIY Music Business Mastermind course here: https://christianhowes.mykajabi.com/store/iNvpjGVk When you work for yourself, every opportunity comes to you because someone knows about your work and trusts you to do your best. To get more of the right people to hire you, you just need to get in front of them and make it a no-brainer. I help freelancers do this every day, and right now I'm opening my calendar to free private consults. Schedule here, before the slots fill: https://christianhowes.com/music-biz-mastermind-testimonials/ If you want to increase your income/impact and are feeling stuck, this is a no-brainer. To clarify, the 30-minute call is an opportunity for you to get game changing feedback on how to best move forward in your freelance career- without any sales pitch. The reason I do these consults is to give value up front and develop trust. Inevitably the calls create business in one way or another down the line because some people ask to work with me or refer me to friends. It's not a pitch! If you're not interested in growing your business, cool. If you're motivated to grow your freelance business, take me up on this offer now here: https://christianhowes.com/music-biz-mastermind-testimonials/ Here's my question for you. When people talk about arts advocacy, or advocating for music, or advocating for music education, why do musicians get all excited and say, "That's cool. I'm down with that," but as soon as you say "sales," musicians, are like, "Oh, that's bad. That's a bad word. Business is a bad word"? Musicians, artists, they've got this hangup about selling, about sales, about business, about treating their career as a business. But that's all it is. It's advocacy. Advocacy for the arts, advocacy for music, for music education, for anything-- the value of music-- is about conveying the message and asking people to respect its value. And so if you're unwilling to sell yourself, if you're unwilling to sell your music, or ask for the value, or spend the time and focus your energy on advocating, then I think that might be hypocritical, actually. And I know that people don't mean it that way. I know that the reason we're hypocritical is because we suffer from sort of schizophrenia, because all these mutually exclusive values are shoved down our throats. And ultimately, it's an expression of our insecurity, because we've been brainwashed to think that if you're just great at music, things are just going to fall into your lap. And it's like popularity in high school. It's like-- Did you ever feel bad because you weren't as popular as everybody else and you thought there was just something wrong with you? So I think we just live with that same feeling. And that's why we don't learn business and we don't learn to advocate for ourselves. We've got all these complexes about it. So I'm interested in what you think about that. And I'm going to tell you one simple thing you can do to get more clients, to advocate for your music, and to sell yourself. And what I would say is spend a half an hour a day-- just a half an hour day--and offer your services. Come from a place of service, of wanting to help. Whether you're a performer, a teacher, a producer, an arranger, a composer, any kind of freelancer, really, find some people that you can offer that to and offer some kind of value upfront. If you're not comfortable asking for what you should get paid to do your service, offer to do it one time for free, or do a free audition, or offer to spend time with somebody, and show them your work. But the point is to take 30 minutes a day and to offer your services to somebody who might have a reason to utilize those services and to benefit from those services. That's my tip. And that's essentially what this video is. So this is a good example. It's a free offering where I am giving something that might be of value so that I can also tell you about the opportunity to hire me to help you as a music business coach, as a coach. That's what I do. I help people learn how to sell themselves in their music career or their freelance career.
