Thrust SSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on 15 October 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first car to officially break the sound barrier. The car was driven by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Wing Commander Andy Green in the Black Rock Desert in the state of Nevada. It was powered by two afterburning Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, as used in the British version of the F-4 Phantom II jet fighter. The car was 16.5 m (54 ft) long, 3.7 m (12 ft) wide and weighed 10.5 tons (10.7 t), and the twin engines developed a net thrust of 223 kN (50,000 lbf), a power output of 110,000 bhp (82MW), burning around 18 litres/second (4.0 Imperial gallons/s or 4.8 US gallons/s). Transformed into the usual terms for car mileages based on its maximum speed, the fuel consumption was about 5,500 l/100 km The Budweiser rocket was the first car to break the sound barrier but was not official as it did not meet the requirements of doing a 2 way speed run.

My gratitude goes to Andy Green for helping with the 4 or 5 bits of this video which I could not understand. Thanks Andy! Who: Andy Green What: Going supersoinc on land When: 13th October 1997 at 11:23 AM Where: Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA Why: Because they dared to do what everyone said could not be done! ThrustSSC's 61st run was the first properly supersoinc run which ThrustSCC did, going beyong the target speed of 715mph indicated (750mph true) to 725mph indicated (760mph true). This was a warmup for the main event. Later that same day the Thrust team attempted to create the first supersonic World Land Speed Record. To set a World Land Speed Record you need to complete 2 runs in opposite directions within 60 minutes. On the first run a double parachute failure created a 2 mile overrun requiring a long tow back to the start line, Andy was about 40 seconds too late coming back across the measured mile. 2 days later they tried again and were succesful, setting the first ever supersoinc Wolrd Land Speed record: 763.035 mph 1227.723 km/h Mach 1.020 For the whole story search for "Supersoinc Dreams", a BBC documentry following the last stages of Project Thust.

Thrust SSC (SuperSonic Car) is a British-designed and built jet-propelled car developed by Richard Noble, Glynne Bowsher, Ron Ayers and Jeremy Bliss. ThrustSSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on October 15, 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first land vehicle to officially break the sound barrier, not considering the earlier, unsubstantiated claim of the Budweiser Rocket. The car was driven by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Squadron Leader Andy Green in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, United States. It was powered by two afterburning Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, as used in British F-4 Phantom II jet fighters. It is 16.5 m (54 ft) long, 3.7 m (12 ft) wide and weighs 10.5 tons (10.7 t). The twin engines developed a thrust of 223 kN (50,000 lbf) and burned around 4 Imperial gallons per second (18.2 l/s or 4.8 US gallons/s). Transformed into the usual terms for car mileages based on its maximum speed, the fuel consumption was about 5,500 l/100 km or 0.04 mpg U.S.

English/Nat The holder of the world land speed record has been showing off the car which he hopes will prove to be the fastest vehicle on earth. The Thrust Supersonic Car (S-S-C) went on show to the public on Monday as the British team led by Richard Noble prepares to set a new record of more than 800 miles per hour. The rocket-like vehicle, powered by two Rolls Royce jet engines, was displayed at the Defence Research Agency at Farnborough, Hampshire, in southern England. The current world land speed record holder Richard Noble was showing off his Thrust S-S-C at the Defence Research Agency at Farnborough in Hampshire. But the British project faces stiff competition from American speedster and former world record holder Craig Breedlove. The Thrust S-S-C will attempt to break the sound barrier and exceed 800 miles per hour. But first the car must go through various speed tests. Thrust S-S-C is powered by two Rolls Royce Spey engines of the type used in R-A-F Phantom fighters. The ten tonne, 54-foot long car will be driven by R-A-F Tornado fighter pilot, Andy Green. SOUNDBITE: "It's like, you know, a man walking on the moon. It's the four minute mile. It's climbing Everest. It's something that nobody has ever done before. It's something that no team has ever done before. We actually have a chance to push back the field of human endeavour, to do something new - to create a genuine world first." SUPER CAPTION: Andy Green, Thrust SSC Driver Noble, who holds the current record of 633 M-P-H, decided not to drive himself because organising the project was a big enough job for him. The car can accelerate to 100 miles per hour within four seconds and reach maximum speed in about 30 seconds. The next tests will come later this month when high speed trials start in the Al Jar desert in Jordan - a site used in the filming of Lawrence of Arabia. SOUNDBITE: "Well, we're going to get to Jordan. When we get to Jordan we hope to get up to 650 miles an hour. Then we go on to the next stage and I think you'll be surprised." SUPER CAPTION: Richard Noble, Project Director Special modifications enable the car to reach such high speeds. It is specially weighted at the front to prevent it leaving the ground. The engines swallow petrol and the car runs on solid aluminium tyres. It takes 29 seconds and 5.5 miles to reach a standstill from top speed, aided by parachutes and disc brakes from a Boeing 757 aircraft. Noble had hoped to race off against Breedlove's Spirit of America car in Nevada, USA scene of the 1983 triumph. But the necessary trials were not completed in time. Now it is likely the British record attempt will have to wait until next year. Hiro Koiso sets a new AMA and FIM records at the 2013 BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials on the Bonneville Salt Flats. "Hiro very possibly the story that most exemplifies what Bonneviile is all about. After he crashed his bike in 2010, Hiro loaned Roger Golhammer's team his entire engine that Hiro had worked on for a year and they watched Jimmy Paulgaard run it for a land speed record. That kind of unselfishness and camaraderie is what makes the BUB event so special". "Scooter Grubb" ScooterShoots.com

'Thrust - Super Sonic Car' which is also called as 'Thrust SSC' in short, is the fastest car in the world. This jet propelled car holds the 'World's Fastest land speed record' and became the first car to break the 'Sound Barrier'. The official land-speed record (measured over one mile) is 1,227.985 km/h (763.035 mi/h) (Mach 1.020), set by Andy Green (UK) on 15 October 1997 in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA. Although Thrust SSC is the first car to break the sound barrier, it is alleged that Budweiser Rocket Car, driven by Stan Barrett (US), reached a speed of 1,190.377 km/h (739.666 mi/h) at Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA, on 17 December 17 1979. However, the published speed of Mach 1.0106 was not officially sanctioned by the USAF, as the Digital Instrument Radar was not calibrated or certified. The radar information was not generated using the vehicle directly but by an operator aiming aiming a dish using a TV screen. The car is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey 202 jet engines which generate 222 kN (50,000 lb) of thrust.
