Thrust SSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on 15 October 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first car to officially break the sound barrier. The car was driven by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Wing Commander Andy Green in the Black Rock Desert in the state of Nevada. It was powered by two afterburning Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, as used in the British version of the F-4 Phantom II jet fighter. The car was 16.5 m (54 ft) long, 3.7 m (12 ft) wide and weighed 10.5 tons (10.7 t), and the twin engines developed a net thrust of 223 kN (50,000 lbf), a power output of 110,000 bhp (82MW), burning around 18 litres/second (4.0 Imperial gallons/s or 4.8 US gallons/s). Transformed into the usual terms for car mileages based on its maximum speed, the fuel consumption was about 5,500 l/100 km The Budweiser rocket was the first car to break the sound barrier but was not official as it did not meet the requirements of doing a 2 way speed run.

In recent years the mystique of land speed records appears to have diminished but for decades it was a scene that made headlines worldwide and was populated exclusively by enormous characters with even bigger balls. Sure, the outright land speed record – usually held by three or four-wheeled vehicles – tends to get the most attention, but bikes have had their glorious moments too. Here we’re going to pick the most important land speed record holders on two wheels over more than a century and over 300mph of improvements.

My gratitude goes to Andy Green for helping with the 4 or 5 bits of this video which I could not understand. Thanks Andy! Who: Andy Green What: Going supersoinc on land When: 13th October 1997 at 11:23 AM Where: Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA Why: Because they dared to do what everyone said could not be done! ThrustSSC's 61st run was the first properly supersoinc run which ThrustSCC did, going beyong the target speed of 715mph indicated (750mph true) to 725mph indicated (760mph true). This was a warmup for the main event. Later that same day the Thrust team attempted to create the first supersonic World Land Speed Record. To set a World Land Speed Record you need to complete 2 runs in opposite directions within 60 minutes. On the first run a double parachute failure created a 2 mile overrun requiring a long tow back to the start line, Andy was about 40 seconds too late coming back across the measured mile. 2 days later they tried again and were succesful, setting the first ever supersoinc Wolrd Land Speed record: 763.035 mph 1227.723 km/h Mach 1.020 For the whole story search for "Supersoinc Dreams", a BBC documentry following the last stages of Project Thust.

Thrust SSC (SuperSonic Car) is a British-designed and built jet-propelled car developed by Richard Noble, Glynne Bowsher, Ron Ayers and Jeremy Bliss. ThrustSSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on October 15, 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first land vehicle to officially break the sound barrier, not considering the earlier, unsubstantiated claim of the Budweiser Rocket. The car was driven by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Squadron Leader Andy Green in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, United States. It was powered by two afterburning Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, as used in British F-4 Phantom II jet fighters. It is 16.5 m (54 ft) long, 3.7 m (12 ft) wide and weighs 10.5 tons (10.7 t). English/Nat Britain's supersonic jet car -- Thrust S-S-C -- arrived in the deserts of southern Jordan Saturday for a planned assault on the world land speed record. A giant Antonov transport plane flew the car to a military airbase near the parched mud flats of Al-Jafr, where it will be put through its paces next month in preparation for next year's record attempt. Dry, barren and flat - the vast expanses of Jordan's Al-Jafr desert stretch as far as the eye can see. The inhospitable plains provide the perfect conditions for Britain's long-awaited attempt at breaking the world land speed record. The car which will attempt to do it -- Thrust S-S-C -- was flown into Faisal Ben Abdul- Aziz airbase Saturday aboard a giant Russian Antonov transport plane. The unique ten-tonne, 54-foot long car is powered by two Rolls Royce Spey engines of the type used in R-A-F Phantom fighters. It can accelerate to 100 miles per hour within four seconds and reach maximum speed in about 30 seconds. The man behind the ambitious project is Richard Noble, who set the existing record of 633.47 miles per hour in 1983. Noble, who also designed Thrust, said the ultimate aim of the desert trials next month was to prepare the car to break the sound barrier in 1997. SOUNDBITE: "Basically we've got 17 tracks here so we will do at least 17 runs. We've probably got about a week's work to get the car complete and ready to go and also to get the track ready. Once we've done that we'll then be running and we'll run continuously." SUPER CAPTION: Richard Noble, project director The British team is racing to break the record ahead of an American rival, currently testing his car in Nevada's Black Desert. The task of driving the Thrust has gone to Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green. He says the car will be put through its paces to ensure everything in it is in top condition for the record attempt. SOUNDBITE: "The primary aim here is to actually do high-speed trials on the car. Our aim is to get the car well over 600 miles an hour, to actually find out what's going to happen to it and make any modifications we need to and prove the car in preparation for our supersonic attempt next year. Now as part of that development, providing everything goes okay, the weather stays fine and the track proves to be long enough, then yes we have the capability to break the record as well." SUPER CAPTION: Andy Green, Thrust SSC driver Thrust S-S-C is designed to reach 850 miles per hour but is not expected to reach that speed because the mud flats at Al-Jafr are just 10 miles long -- about two thirds of the distance needed for the car to reach supersonic speeds. But after years of preparation and a succession of delays, Noble's dream of holding on to and bettering his long-standing record is now firmly within reach.. English/Nat British fighter pilot Andy Green shattered the world land speed record on Thursday reaching speeds of over 700 miles per hour (1120 kilometres). It was nearly 74 miles per hour (118 kilometres) faster than the record set by his boss, Richard Noble almost 14 years ago. Noble still heads the British team and designed the car which beat the record on Thursday. Green pushed Noble's jet-powered car to 700.661 miles per hour (1120 kilometres) on the first of two timed dashes down the 13-mile (21 kilometres) course, then turned around within the allotted one hour for a 728.008 miles per hour clincher (1165 kilometres). His average of 714.144 miles per hour (1142 kilometres) shattered the 633.47 miles per hour (1012 kilometres) Noble established October. 4, 1983. The dual jet-powered car hit 719.137 miles per hour (1150 kilometres) on Tuesday, but problems with the parachutes forced Green to jam on the brakes at 200 miles per hour (320 kilometres). After a day off on Wednesday for mechanical repairs the team were back on form for Thursday's attempt at the record. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Subject to confirmation, and that's how it has to be, we have a new world record for the mile at 714.144 miles per hour and a new world record for the kilometre at 713. 990 miles per hour SUPER CAPTION: Richard Noble, There were fears that rain may hold the team up, but in the event, the conditions were perfect. SOUNDBITE: (English) 'Look at the surface, it's fantastic, you can drive as fast as you want on this surface.....well, as fast as we felt safe to go' SUPER CAPTION: Andy Green, driver Thursday's record also moved the team toward Noble's eventual goal of a supersonic run. To break the sound barrier at the dry lake bed's 4,000-foot (1219 metres approx) altitude would require a speed of 750-760 (1200- 1216 kilometres) miles per hour. Across the playa, American Craig Breedlove could only watch the end of his dream to add the 700 miles per hour (1120 kilometres) record to being the first person to travel 400 miles per hour (640 kilometres), 500 miles per hour (800 kilometres) and 600 miles per hour on land (960 kilometres). He held the speed record five times from 1963 to 1965 but only managed to reach 381 miles per hour (609 kilometres) when he made the attempt on Sunday. Both American and British teams have had financial problems this year and Noble's team came close to having to scrap their bid to break the record. English/Nat The holder of the world land speed record has been showing off the car which he hopes will prove to be the fastest vehicle on earth. The Thrust Supersonic Car (S-S-C) went on show to the public on Monday as the British team led by Richard Noble prepares to set a new record of more than 800 miles per hour. The rocket-like vehicle, powered by two Rolls Royce jet engines, was displayed at the Defence Research Agency at Farnborough, Hampshire, in southern England. The current world land speed record holder Richard Noble was showing off his Thrust S-S-C at the Defence Research Agency at Farnborough in Hampshire. But the British project faces stiff competition from American speedster and former world record holder Craig Breedlove. The Thrust S-S-C will attempt to break the sound barrier and exceed 800 miles per hour. But first the car must go through various speed tests. Thrust S-S-C is powered by two Rolls Royce Spey engines of the type used in R-A-F Phantom fighters. The car can accelerate to 100 miles per hour within four seconds and reach maximum speed in about 30 seconds. Special modifications enable the car to reach such high speeds. It is specially weighted at the front to prevent it leaving the ground. The engines swallow petrol and the car runs on solid aluminium tyres. The ten tonne, 54-foot long car will be driven by R-A-F Tornado fighter pilot, Andy Green. SOUNDBITE: "It's like, you know, a man walking on the moon. It's the four minute mile. It's climbing Everest. It's something that nobody has ever done before. It's something that no team has ever done before. We actually have a chance to push back the field of human endeavour, to do something new - to create a genuine world first." SUPER CAPTION: Andy Green, Thrust SSC Driver Noble, who holds the current record of 633 M-P-H, decided not to drive himself because organising the project was a big enough job for him. Tests will come later this month when high speed trials start in the Al Jar desert in Jordan - a site used in the filming of Lawrence of Arabia. SOUNDBITE: "Well, we're going to get to Jordan. When we get to Jordan we hope to get up to 650 miles an hour. Then we go on to the next stage and I think you'll be surprised." SUPER CAPTION: Richard Noble, Project Director Noble had hoped to race off against Breedlove's Spirit of America car in Nevada, U-S-A - scene of the 1983 triumph. But the necessary trials were not completed in time. Now it is likely the British record attempt will have to wait until next year. Squadron leader Andy Green conducted on Monday a last trial, before the car is flown to Jordan to conduct high-speed tests. Green took the car up to 190 M-P-H on the Farnborough runway. It takes 29 seconds and 5.5 miles to reach a standstill from top speed, aided by parachutes and disc brakes from a Boeing 757 aircraft. BLOODHOUND's Driver, Andy Green, show's you around his 1,000mph office. Andy has drawn on his experience of flying fast jets and driving World Land Speed Record winners Thrust SSC and JCB Dieselmax to design the dashboard and cockpit layout. Good ergonomics are vital given that BLOODHOUND SSC will cover a mile in 3.6 seconds, or 150m in the (300 millisecond) blink of an eye. The central screen shows the speed in miles per hour and Mach number (Mach 1 being the speed of sound), calculated by GPS, plus jet engine and rocket outputs. Dynamic speed indicators help Andy to judge when to fire the rocket and deploy the braking systems. Wheel loads are also given prominence. BLOODHOUND does not use aerodynamic downforce, as a Formula 1 car does, while lift at the nose or rear axle must also be avoided at all costs. The need to carefully balance forces throughout its 1000mph speed range is one of the major reasons why shaping the Car has taken 30 design-years. The left-hand screen shows hydraulic pressures and temperatures in the braking and airbrake systems, while the one to Andy's right provides information about the three engines, including temperatures, pressures and fuel levels. Together, the EJ200 jet engine and Nammo hybrid rockets produce around 210 kN (21 tonnes) of thrust, equivalent to 135,000 thrust hp, or 180 F1 cars, and Andy will monitor their status at key points during each run. BLOODHOUND's dash also features two precision-engineered analogue Rolex instruments: a chronograph with built-in stopwatch, and a speedometer graduated up to 1,100mph (1,770km/h). The speedometer is a vital back-up to allow the Car to be stopped safely should the digital dashboard fail, while the chronograph will help to time the start-up and cool-down of the jet, and help to monitor the performance of other systems. Tested to withstand the severe vibration at 1,000 mph and the desert heat, these bespoke Rolex instruments are unique to BLOODHOUND SSC.
