Bloodhound SSC (Four wheels, 7.5 tonnes, 135,000 horsepower) made its first public runs at Cornwall Airport Newquay, hitting a peak speed of 210mph. The Bloodhound Project is an international education initiative focussed around a 1,000mph (1,609 km/h) World Land Speed Record. The primary aim is to inspire the next generation of scientist and engineers by showcasing STEM subjects (science, technology engineering and mathematics) in the most exciting way possible. Bloodhound SSC is a combination of fast jet, F1 car and spaceship. The Project is followed in over 220 countries and territories. At full speed, Bloodhound SSC will cover a mile (1.6km) in 3.6 seconds – that’s 4.5 football pitches laid end to end, per second, or 300m in the blink of an eye. My gratitude goes to Andy Green for helping with the 4 or 5 bits of this video which I could not understand. Thanks Andy! Who: Andy Green What: Going supersoinc on land When: 13th October 1997 at 11:23 AM Where: Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA Why: Because they dared to do what everyone said could not be done! ThrustSSC's 61st run was the first properly supersoinc run which ThrustSCC did, going beyong the target speed of 715mph indicated (750mph true) to 725mph indicated (760mph true). This was a warmup for the main event. Later that same day the Thrust team attempted to create the first supersonic World Land Speed Record. To set a World Land Speed Record you need to complete 2 runs in opposite directions within 60 minutes. On the first run a double parachute failure created a 2 mile overrun requiring a long tow back to the start line, Andy was about 40 seconds too late coming back across the measured mile. 2 days later they tried again and were succesful, setting the first ever supersoinc Wolrd Land Speed record: 763.035 mph 1227.723 km/h Mach 1.020 For the whole story search for "Supersoinc Dreams", a BBC documentry following the last stages of Project Thust.

In this episode of Cisco BHTV Richard Noble and Andy Green discuss the challenges Richard faced when driving Thrust2 at over 600 mph. October 4th marks the 30th anniversary of Richard Noble driving Thrust 2 to a then world record speed of 633.468 mph (1,019.47 kmh). When asked why he had done it, Noble replied: "For Britain and for the hell of it." To buy a DVD of the film please visit www.bloodhoundssc.com/shop It was the realisation of a childhood ambition sparked when six-year old Noble saw 'Crusader', the boat built for land speed legend John Cobb, moored on a Loch Ness quayside. His journey from backseat day-dreamer to World Record breaker would be characterised by boundless energy, unswerving enthusiasm and the unshakeable belief that any obstacle could be ground down to become an opportunity. This faith was tested many times during the six years of the Thrust Project as Richard and a small team of engineers and volunteers overcame technical and financial challenges, freak floods, failures and a very public 180 mph (290 kmh) crash, to ultimately set a record that would remain unbeaten for fourteen years. Since Donald Campbell reached 403.10 mph (648.72 kmh) with his iconic Bluebird CN7 in 1964, the Land Speed record had become the preserve of younger American racers, who challenged the existing rules and harnessed the might of surplus military jet engines to rapidly push the limit far beyond the 500 mph (800 kmh) mark. In 1970 Gary Gabelich achieved a two-way average speed through the Measured Mile of 622.407 mph (1001.666 kmh), in the spare and elegant 'Blue Flame' -- to this day the only successful rocket-powered Land Speed Record car. There the record stood, seemingly out of reach, until a Twickenham-based enthusiast championed the design and build of the UK's first jet powered Land Speed contender. The Thrust2 team had several record attempts ruined by the weather: Bonneville in '81 was washed out, Bonneville in '82 was under two feet of water when they arrived, this prompted the team to discover the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, a dried out lakebed that offered 12 miles (20 km) of perfectly flat baked mud which perfectly suited their solid wheels. However, after a few runs it started raining. The team returned in 1983 and made 11 runs as they learned how the car handled at speeds above 600 mph. They had many more setbacks along the way including days of torrential rain, high winds and an engine surge which could have destroyed the jet. Fortunately the Avon was unharmed and the team was able to set the record of 633 mph on October 4th and return to the UK victorious. "This car is part of my family, it took over six years to get the Land Speed Record and I've been over 600 mph 11 times in it" said Richard Noble. Richard went on to direct the Thrust SSC campaign which, in 1997, culminated in RAF fighter pilot Andy Green becoming the first person to break the sound barrier on land. Their record of 763.035 mph (1,227.985 kmh) still stands. Today Richard is leading The BLOODHOUND Project, a global education initiative focused on a 1,000 mph (1,609 kmh) land speed record attempt. The new car builds on the legacy of Thrusts 2 and SSC, combining space, aeronautic and Formula 1 technologies to cross the Measured Mile in just 3.6 seconds. "We could never have done Thrust SSC without Thrust2. It generated a huge amount of publicity and interest and resulted in a three-way challenge between ourselves, the McLaren F1 team and Craig Breedlove with his car Spirit of America -- Sonic 1. The experience we gained fed into the Supersonic car programme and the subsequent success of Thrust SSC, with Andy driving, created this enormous global following that enabled us to start The Bloodhound Project." For the first time in Land Speed Record history, going fast is not the team's main objective. Instead it is to use BLOODHOUND to showcase science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the most exciting way possible, and inspire a future generation of engineers and technologists. Richard's childhood dream has now evolved into a multi-faceted, worldwide movement, with followers in over 220 countries, 5,500 UK schools using BLOODHOUND in the classroom and a small army of ambassadors sharing the excitement with audiences on five continents.

Thrust SSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on 15 October 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first car to officially break the sound barrier. The car was driven by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Wing Commander Andy Green in the Black Rock Desert in the state of Nevada. It was powered by two afterburning Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, as used in the British version of the F-4 Phantom II jet fighter. The car was 16.5 m (54 ft) long, 3.7 m (12 ft) wide and weighed 10.5 tons (10.7 t), and the twin engines developed a net thrust of 223 kN (50,000 lbf), a power output of 110,000 bhp (82MW), burning around 18 litres/second (4.0 Imperial gallons/s or 4.8 US gallons/s). Transformed into the usual terms for car mileages based on its maximum speed, the fuel consumption was about 5,500 l/100 km The Budweiser rocket was the first car to break the sound barrier but was not official as it did not meet the requirements of doing a 2 way speed run. https://goo.gl/5rqq6Q

BLOODHOUND's Driver, Andy Green, show's you around his 1,000mph office. Andy has drawn on his experience of flying fast jets and driving World Land Speed Record winners Thrust SSC and JCB Dieselmax to design the dashboard and cockpit layout. Good ergonomics are vital given that BLOODHOUND SSC will cover a mile in 3.6 seconds, or 150m in the (300 millisecond) blink of an eye. The central screen shows the speed in miles per hour and Mach number (Mach 1 being the speed of sound), calculated by GPS, plus jet engine and rocket outputs. Dynamic speed indicators help Andy to judge when to fire the rocket and deploy the braking systems. Wheel loads are also given prominence. BLOODHOUND does not use aerodynamic downforce, as a Formula 1 car does, while lift at the nose or rear axle must also be avoided at all costs. The need to carefully balance forces throughout its 1000mph speed range is one of the major reasons why shaping the Car has taken 30 design-years. The left-hand screen shows hydraulic pressures and temperatures in the braking and airbrake systems, while the one to Andy's right provides information about the three engines, including temperatures, pressures and fuel levels. Together, the EJ200 jet engine and Nammo hybrid rockets produce around 210 kN (21 tonnes) of thrust, equivalent to 135,000 thrust hp, or 180 F1 cars, and Andy will monitor their status at key points during each run. BLOODHOUND's dash also features two precision-engineered analogue Rolex instruments: a chronograph with built-in stopwatch, and a speedometer graduated up to 1,100mph (1,770km/h). The speedometer is a vital back-up to allow the Car to be stopped safely should the digital dashboard fail, while the chronograph will help to time the start-up and cool-down of the jet, and help to monitor the performance of other systems. Tested to withstand the severe vibration at 1,000 mph and the desert heat, these bespoke Rolex instruments are unique to BLOODHOUND SSC.

In recent years the mystique of land speed records appears to have diminished but for decades it was a scene that made headlines worldwide and was populated exclusively by enormous characters with even bigger balls. Sure, the outright land speed record – usually held by three or four-wheeled vehicles – tends to get the most attention, but bikes have had their glorious moments too. Here we’re going to pick the most important land speed record holders on two wheels over more than a century and over 300mph of improvements.

English/Nat British fighter pilot Andy Green shattered the world land speed record on Thursday reaching speeds of over 700 miles per hour (1120 kilometres). It was nearly 74 miles per hour (118 kilometres) faster than the record set by his boss, Richard Noble almost 14 years ago. Noble still heads the British team and designed the car which beat the record on Thursday. Green pushed Noble's jet-powered car to 700.661 miles per hour (1120 kilometres) on the first of two timed dashes down the 13-mile (21 kilometres) course, then turned around within the allotted one hour for a 728.008 miles per hour clincher (1165 kilometres). His average of 714.144 miles per hour (1142 kilometres) shattered the 633.47 miles per hour (1012 kilometres) Noble established October. 4, 1983. The dual jet-powered car hit 719.137 miles per hour (1150 kilometres) on Tuesday, but problems with the parachutes forced Green to jam on the brakes at 200 miles per hour (320 kilometres). After a day off on Wednesday for mechanical repairs the team were back on form for Thursday's attempt at the record. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Subject to confirmation, and that's how it has to be, we have a new world record for the mile at 714.144 miles per hour and a new world record for the kilometre at 713. 990 miles per hour SUPER CAPTION: Richard Noble, There were fears that rain may hold the team up, but in the event, the conditions were perfect. SOUNDBITE: (English) 'Look at the surface, it's fantastic, you can drive as fast as you want on this surface.....well, as fast as we felt safe to go' SUPER CAPTION: Andy Green, driver Thursday's record also moved the team toward Noble's eventual goal of a supersonic run. To break the sound barrier at the dry lake bed's 4,000-foot (1219 metres approx) altitude would require a speed of 750-760 (1200- 1216 kilometres) miles per hour. Across the playa, American Craig Breedlove could only watch the end of his dream to add the 700 miles per hour (1120 kilometres) record to being the first person to travel 400 miles per hour (640 kilometres), 500 miles per hour (800 kilometres) and 600 miles per hour on land (960 kilometres). He held the speed record five times from 1963 to 1965 but only managed to reach 381 miles per hour (609 kilometres) when he made the attempt on Sunday. Both American and British teams have had financial problems this year and Noble's team came close to having to scrap their bid to break the record. 'Thrust - Super Sonic Car' which is also called as 'Thrust SSC' in short, is the fastest car in the world. This jet propelled car holds the 'World's Fastest land speed record' and became the first car to break the 'Sound Barrier'. The official land-speed record (measured over one mile) is 1,227.985 km/h (763.035 mi/h) (Mach 1.020), set by Andy Green (UK) on 15 October 1997 in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA. Although Thrust SSC is the first car to break the sound barrier, it is alleged that Budweiser Rocket Car, driven by Stan Barrett (US), reached a speed of 1,190.377 km/h (739.666 mi/h) at Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA, on 17 December 17 1979. However, the published speed of Mach 1.0106 was not officially sanctioned by the USAF, as the Digital Instrument Radar was not calibrated or certified. The radar information was not generated using the vehicle directly but by an operator aiming aiming a dish using a TV screen. The car is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey 202 jet engines which generate 222 kN (50,000 lb) of thrust.

Imagine travelling faster than the speed of sound, it's not for the faint hearted. Well, in a vehicle that looks more like a rocket ship than a car, Andy Green is planning to do just that. He broke the world land speed record twenty years ago. But he fell just short of breaking the speed of sound, at 763 miles an hour. Now, he's determined to break that barrier, as well as his own record, in the same sort of vehicle.
