An important deity found all over the Indian subcontinent in its history, Kartikeya is particularly popular and predominantly worshipped in South India as Murugan, among the Tamil people. Kartikeya is an ancient god, traceable to the Vedic era. Archaeological evidence from 1st-century CE and earlier, where he is found with Hindu god Agni (fire), suggest that he was a significant deity in early Hinduism. He is found in many medieval temples all over India, such as at the Ellora Caves and Elephanta Caves. The iconography of Kartikeya varies significantly; he is typically represented as an ever-youthful man, riding or near a peacock, dressed with weapons sometimes near a rooster. Most icons show him with one head, but some show him with six heads reflecting the legend surrounding his birth where six mothers symbolizing the six stars of Pleiades cluster who took care of newly born baby Kartikeya. He grows up quickly into a philosopher-warrior, destroys evil in the form of demon Taraka, teaches the pursuit of ethical life and the theology of Shaiva Siddhanta. He has inspired many poet-sants, such as Arunagirinathar. Kartikeya, as Murugan or Subrahmanya, is found as a primary deity in temples wherever communities of the Tamil people live worldwide, particularly in Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and Réunion. Three of the six richest and busiest temples in Tamil Nadu are dedicated to him. The Kataragama temple dedicated to him in Sri Lanka attracts Tamils, Sinhalese people and the Vedda people. He is also found in other parts of India, sometimes as Skanda, but in a secondary role along with Ganesha, Parvati and Shiva. Ayyappan is the Hindu god of growth, particularly popular in Kerala. He is a synthetic deity, the son of Shiva and Mohini – the female avatar of Vishnu. Ayyappan is also referred to as Ayyappa, Sastavu, Hariharaputra, Manikanta, Shasta or Dharma Shasta. Sabarimala is a Hindu pilgrimage centre located at the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghat mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta District, Perunad grama panchayat in Kerala. It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world with an estimated 45-50 million devotees visiting every year. Ayyappan's temple is situated amidst 18 hills. The temple is situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 1260 m (4,133 ft) above mean sea level, and is surrounded by mountains and dense forests. The dense forest, (Periyar Tiger Reserve), around the temple is known as Poongavanam. Temples exist in each of the hills surrounding Sabarimala. While functional and intact temples exist at many places in the surrounding areas like Nilakkal, Kalaketty, and Karimala remnants of old temples survive to this day on remaining hills. The shrine at Sabarimala is an ancient temple of Ayyappan also known as sasta and Dharmasasta. In the 12th century, Manikandan, a prince of Pandalam dynasty, meditated at Sabarimala temple and became one with the divine. Manikandan was an avatar of Ayyappan. Sabarimala is linked to pilgrimage predominantly undertaken by Hindus. Sabarimala pilgrims can be identified easily, as they wear black or blue dress. They do not shave until the completion of the pilgrimage, and smear Vibhuti or sandal paste on their forehead. In 1991, the Kerala High Court restricted entry of women above the age of 10 and below the age of 50 from offering worship at Sabarimala Shrine as they were of the menstruating age. Presently, the Supreme Court of India has taken a petition to review the judgment of High Court and allow entry of women. As of October 2017, the Supreme Court is referring the constitution bench to make a decision on the pertaining ban. The temple is open for worship only during the days of Mandalapooja (approximately 15 November to 26 December), Makaravilakku or "Makara Sankranti" (14 January) and Maha Vishuva Sankranti (14 April), and the first five days of each Malayalam month. Ayyappan is also referred to as Ayyappa, Sastavu, Hariharaputra, Manikanta, Shasta or Dharma Shasta. The iconography of Ayyappan depicts him as a handsome celibate god doing yoga and as an epitome of Dharma, who wears a bell around his neck. In the Hindu pantheon, his legends are relatively recent but diverse. For some, he is also an incarnation of the Buddha. He is honored by some Muslims in Kerala, with legends wherein Ayyappan defeats and gains worship of the Muslim brigand Vavar. In the Hindu tradition popular in the Western Ghats of India, he was born with the powers of Shiva and Vishnu to confront and defeat the shape shifting evil Buffalo demoness Mahishasuri. He was raised by a childless royal couple, and grows up as a warrior yogi champion of ethical and dharmic living. In the South Indian version, Ayyappan images show him as riding a tiger, but in some places such as Sri Lanka he is shown as riding a white elephant. Ayyappan popularity has grown in many parts of India, and the most prominent Ayyappan shrine is at Sabarimala, nestled in the hills of Pathanamthitta of Kerala. The shrine receives millions of pilgrims every year in late December and early January, many of whom prepare for weeks before and then climb the hill barefoot, making it one of the largest active pilgrimage sites in the world The pilgrimage attracts a wide range of devotees, from diverse social or economic backgrounds, except women in their fertile age given Ayyappan is believed to be the celibate deity. The shrine receives millions of pilgrims every year in late December and early January, many of whom prepare for weeks before and then climb the hill barefoot, making it one of the largest active pilgrimage sites in the world. The pilgrimage attracts a wide range of devotees, from diverse social or economic backgrounds, except women in their fertile age given Ayyappan is believed to be the celibate deity. Some Ayyappan temples show him with women in grihastha (married, householder) life. Ayyappan may share a historical relationship with the Tamil deity Aiyanar. The most significant festival linked to him is the Makaravilakku (Makara Sankranti), observed around the winter solstice. Listen toAyyappan Tamil Song By K.Veeramani – Sri Ayyappan Kavacham - ஸ்ரீ ஐயப்பன் கவசம் Lord Ayyappa was the son of Vishnu & Shiva Lord Ayyappa is a very popular Hindu deity, which is mainly worshipped in South India. He is also spelt as Ayyappa. It is believed that he was born out of the union between Lord Shiva and the mythical Mohini, who is also regarded as an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, Ayyappa is also called as ‘ Hariharan Puthiran’ which means the son of both Hari or Vishnu and ‘ Haran’ or Shiva. Lord Ayyappa also called as Manikandan Maniknanadan is the another name of Ayyappa because, according to the legend of his birth, his parents tied a golden bell also called as mani around his neck ( kandan ) soon after his birth. As legendary, when Shiva and Mohini abandoned the child on the banks of the Pampa River, the ruler of that dynasty, King Rajashekhara, the childless monarch belonging to Pandalam, adopted Ayyappa and accepted him as the divine gift. The Deification of Lord Ayyappa The king understood the queens' bad nature against his son and begged Manikantan’s forgiveness. Then Manikntan left for the heavenly abode after telling the king to build a large temple at Sabari, so that the memories remain forever on the earth. The temple was constructed and Lord Parshuram sculpted the figure of Lord Ayyappa and installed it on the eve of Makar Sankranti. Thus in this way, Lord Ayyappa was defined. King Rajasekara built the shrine and the sacred eighteen stairs leading to the temple complex was made. As he was in a dilemma for perplexing the task of placing Dharamasastha’s idol in the temple for darshan, he was reminded the words of Lord himself. The River Pampa known as Ganga, Sabarimala as holy as Kasi – Dharmasastha sent Parshuram, who made the land of Kerala holy from the bottom of the ocean to the Sabarimala and it was he who carved the figure of Lord Ayyappa. The Worship of Lord Ayyappa Strict religious adherence was practised by Lord Ayyappa to receive his blessings by the devotees. First of all, the devotees observe a 41-day penance before visiting him in the temple. They should also avoid any physical abstinence from physical pleasures and other family ties and should live like a celibate or ‘ brahamachari’. They should also continuously practice the goodness of life. Apart from the above, the devotees have to bathe in the holy river Pampa, and adorn themselves with three-eyed coconut and ‘aantha’ garland and then should bravely steep climb 18 stairs of Sabarimala temple. The Famous Pilgrimage of Sabarimala Sabarimala in Kerala is the most famous Ayyappa shrine and is visited by over 50 million devotees every year. It is one of the most famous pilgrimages in the world. Pilgrims from around the country visit this place to get the blessings of Lord Ayyappa. Listen to Ayyappan Tamil Devotional Songs by K.Veeramani - ஐயப்பன் பக்தி பாடல்கள் There is an interesting story behind the birth of Lord Ayyappa (or how Ayyappan was Born) – the God of Sabarimala Hill Temple in Kerala. The legendary story says that after Goddess Durga killed the demon king Mahishasur, his sister Mahishi set to take revenge on her brother’s death. She earned Lord Brahma’s boon that only a child born out of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu could kill her or in other words it meant she was indestructible. Hence Vishnu incarnated as a beautiful women named Mohini and wed Lord Shiva and out of their union Swamy Ayyappa was born. Legends also say that Bhasmasura who pleased Lord Shiva earned the boon that he could burn anything into ashes on which he placed his hand over. The moment he earned this boon he ran behind Lord Shiva threatening him to turn to ashes. Then Mahadeva called Mahavishnu for help and hid himself behind a peepal tree. Lord Vishnu, knowing about the situation decided to help Shiva by taking the female form of ‘Mohini’, “the enchanting”. When Bhasmasura show Vishnu in this form he was bewitched by his beauty and tried to catch her. Vishnu instructed Bhasmasura to hold his hand over his head and thus Bhasmasura was reduced to ashes. Hearing the whole story Lord Shiva expressed his desire to see Vishnu in female form. When Vishnu appeared thus, Shiva overcame with passion and united with her. From this union, Lord Ayyappa was born and he combined himself the powers of Vishnu and Shiva. Aigiri Nandini (Instrumental) | Mahishasura Mardhini Stotram | Navratri Special | B. Sivarmakrishna Rao Navratri, also spelled Navaratri or Navarathri, is a multi-day Hindu festival celebrated in the autumn every year. Nine Goddesses of Navratri are collectively known as Navadurga and are mentioned in the Devi Mahatmya and Durga Saptashati. The Nine Goddesses worshipped on each of the nine days of Navaratri are incarnations of Goddess Shakti. The nine goddess worshipped are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kala Ratri (Kaalratri), Maha Gowri and Siddhidayini. The nine days are also a major crop season cultural event, such as competitive design and staging of pandals, a family visit to these pandals and the public celebration of classical and folk dances of Hindu culture. On the final day, called the Vijayadashami or Dussehra, the statues are either immersed in a water body such as river and ocean, or alternatively the statue symbolizing the evil is burnt with fireworks marking evil's destruction. The festival also starts the preparation for one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays, Diwali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days after the Vijayadashami or Dussehra. As the mother she is known as Adi parashakti, Adi Para Shakti, Adiparashakti or Adishakti. On the earthly plane, Shakti most actively manifests through female embodiment and creativity/fertility, though it is also present in males in its potential, unmanifest form.
