1990 PIF for the ten water blah-blah-blah companies somewhere in the world. They like to preach their friendly message through means of some distorted planet where everyone lives on a single drain in the ground. Seriously, it's like a Matchbox playset come to life. Note the thunder and lightning effect from those privatisation PIFs I uploaded many years ago. They do like their repetition.

Hey, transparent line-drawing kids! Being literally smacked in the face by the lack of job vacancies? Well, we don't give a flying one to be honest, but it's an election year so here's "The Careers Service". Remember, it IS entirely your own fault that you're unemployed, you proletarian PRICKS, but this service thing will give you a leg up by telling you what exams you SHOULD have done to prepare yourself for a lifetime in menial, soul-destroying tasks. And if that doesn't work, well, we've done all we can. Maybe you should stop holding on to those hopes and dreams, you plebian SCUM. Your last hope is the Manpower Services Commission. Hope you liked "Roots". And enjoy the fantastic rock soundtrack! The voiceover might be Keith Barron. This was originally hosted by Mr Trimble's TMF Extra, until its hosting service beat them to death with a fencepost.

A PIF within a PIF. Wouldn't you think this would be pure genius? Well, obviously it's not - according to this PIF from around the late '70s or '80s, which shows two actors arguing over how to act when bikers are around your car. They both storm off and shoot the PIF anyway. I think it goes well, but what happens next? They go home, shoot themselves and call it quits. What a great ending.

Old '70s drink driving cinema PIF with the message: "Don't take your car for a drink." It's a good thing no one took this literally. Could you imagine tipping a pint of mild down the water tank? I wonder what effect it would have. The car might just blow up. Or turn into a binge drinker. Surprisingly, this is rated U by our good friends the BBFC. What, despite the horrific screams and violent crash? Come on - this isn't suitable for children. I know this was around the time Jaws was getting a PG in the US, but seriously? This is quite disturbing. I say an AA (old '70s certificate) at the least!

In tribute to the late Keith Barron, here's a compilation of PIFs with his disapproving voice on the soundtrack. This is nowhere in the same galaxy as exhaustive, he did loads, mostly in the late seventies to early eighties golden age of audio crackle and grainy film. His voice was perfect for PIFs because he had the ability to sound disappointed, resigned, and like he was barely repressing his rage at your stupidity. The first one is about smoking in bed. Barron starts by admonishing you for smoking at all in the first place, you prick, before adding that if you're dumb enough to do it in bed it will inevitably kill you. No two ways about it. And it'll be your own fault. Don't do it. The second one is aimed at farmers, so we used to see it on TSW sometimes. I've seen city-dwellers scoff at the supposedly narrow focus of a PIF like this, but COI weren't daft, they picked their targets. This would have been relatively little seen on, say, Thames or even Granada. Anyway, Barron murders a doll a la the episode one cliffhanger to Robots of Death in order to demonstrate one of Apaches' many lessons: if you like it, you better put a grid on it. Barron was also the voice of the first concerted anti-Drink Drive campaign, "Don't take your Car for a Drink". Mostly this amounted to him reading out the tagline in a voice glistening with contempt; the one I've included here (featuring the time-honoured technique of a montage of despair with unfitting music) also allows him to spit out a depressing statistic. More cars next, and the dangers of overtaking at junctions. Keith narrates this one in the second person, so you're in no doubt whatsoever that you personally are an idiot who should feel bad. Ends with the same gambit as the smoking in bed one, with almost identical delivery. That's what they teach you at the Sheffield Playhouse. Or did. Finally, my favourite, the one where a family is murdered by their own dog and Keith Barron shows no sympathy whatsoever. From the mid-eighties; I saw it a few times in my childhood, mostly on Channel Four during the afternoons when TSW couldn't rustle up any advertising. (There was a brief period in the early 90s when Sundays on Four before about 4pm were exclusively advertised with PIFs from the 70s and 80s). Needless to say, it put the wind right up me every time. It was just so arbitrarily cruel - though not as cruel as Barron's closing line. Now that's a zero-sum game. So. Farewell then, Keith Barron. God loves a character actor, and so did the COI. Don't do it.

In 1974, Britain's BBC was looking for a starring vehicle for actress Rita Tushingham. They decided to pair her with actor Keith Barron in a sitcom about two single people trying to share the same flat. The series was called NO STRINGS, and six episodes were filmed and broadcast in Oct-Nov 1974. But before the series could be approved for production, a pilot episode was filmed and shown to audiences on 16 April 1974. The pilot was telecast as an episode of the COMEDY PLAYHOUSE series, which was an anthology series consisting of such one-off pilot episodes. This is that pilot episode. Sorry about the frame counter in the lower part of the screen. It's part of the original image and can't be removed.

All about DEATH. SUBSCRIBE if you want to see more.... if you dare!Born in Mexborough, South Yorkshire,[1] Barron's career started at the Sheffield Repertory Theatre, where he also met his wife, Mary, a stage designer.[2] He became well known to British television viewers in the early 1960s as the easygoing Detective Sergeant Swift in the Granada TV series The Odd Man and its spin-off It's Dark Outside. His major breakthrough, however, was as Nigel Barton in the writer Dennis Potter's semi-autobiographical plays Stand Up, Nigel Barton and Vote, Vote, Vote for Nigel Barton (both 1965) in BBC1's The Wednesday Play anthology series (he later played a very similar character in Potter's Play For Today episode Only Make Believe (1973)). Barron made many one-off television appearances, from Redcap and Z-Cars in the mid-1960s, to Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), Strange Report, The New Avengers, The Professionals and A Touch of Frost. He made two appearances in Upstairs, Downstairs as Australian Gregory Wilmot. In March 1983 he was a guest in the Doctor Who story Enlightenment. He was a frequent voiceover artist for British TV commercials and public information films. In 1989 he starred on television in a story of relationships in a new town in the Midlands entitled Take Me Home, with Annette Crosbie as his wife and Maggie O'Neill as his girlfriend. One of his best-loved and best-remembered roles was in the 1980s Yorkshire Television sitcom Duty Free. In the 1990s he co-starred in the sitcoms Haggard and All Night Long. In the 2000s he was a regular character on the ITV Sunday-night drama Where the Heart Is. In 2014 he reprised his role of David Pearce in the touring stage show of the tv series 'Duty Free'. He also starred in the first series of the BBC drama The Chase (2006 TV series). On the big screen he appeared in Baby Love (1968) and David Puttnam's film Melody (1971) as Mr Latimer. Barron also appeared as the guest celebrity in dictionary corner on several episodes of the Channel 4 words and numbers game Countdown. He was the star on Bunn and Co., a radio show that was broadcast from March 2003 to April 2004 on BBC Radio 4. Barron's performance in the BBC's Test the Nation IQ test show on 2 September 2006 gave him an IQ of 146. In 2007 Barron joined ITV1's Coronation Street as George Trench. In 2011, Barron starred in the BBC show, Lapland, a role which he returned to for a series, Being Eileen, from February 2013.[3][4][5]

1983 anti-smoking PIF from the Health Education Council. This one abandons all thought of frightening tactics by using the classic “we asked people in the street” method, although it delivers mixed results. Some of the people range from being quite good to coming off as GCSE Drama students, and it’s nowhere near as effective as when the NHS did the same thing a few decades later. I suppose it’s not all bad, though. It’s not disastrous, and it doesn’t have the THINK! logo at the end, so there’s at least some merit. However, at a time when PIFs were recognized as hard-hitting works of horrific art, this one commits the crime of being just plain forgettable. I think we’d all take the Natural Born Smoker any day.

He is Not so High, That He Cannot Reach You Vs. 1 This great God of mine Is lofty and high. But God is not far! No, no! He is nigh! For He reaches to save The contrite from sin, And He's content to dwell With the humblest men. Chorus: Well, He is not so high That He cannot reach you, No matter what pit You've fallen into! He's the God of all grace! He's faithful and true! And, in infinite love, He's reaching for you! Vs. 2 He sits in His heaven, In the high, holy place, And His eyes behold us! He hides not His face! And His arm is not short! He can help those who fall! And His ear is not deaf! He'll hear when you call! Vs.3 Who measured the waters In the palm of His hand? And Who knows the weight Of each grain of sand? He's the very same One Who shows that He cares For each little child When He answers their prayers!

With World War II having just finished, a beleaguered nation of upright citizens attempt to get their lives in some sort of order. Lots of cars could now be taken back out of storage, and back onto the roads. And into ditches, lampposts and bus queues, if you hadn't checked your motor car after wiping the dust off of it. Tsk. Helpfully, a couple of Cholmondeley-Warner types are here to warn us, by way of scaring the willies out of everyone. Of course, in actual fact it's not even remotely spooky, despite the intention. But to be fair, after getting bombed by the Luftwaffe for half a decade, the audience probably had a high fright threshold right then.

Another one for Halloween, although this is more faintly unsettling than genuinely scary as the world's most middle-class family casually evacuate their homes after a door starts belching smoke. Fortunately, Keith Barron (or Edward Judd - it's that sort of high, slightly nasal, faintly angry tenor they exemplified) is on hand to tell them not to open the door to whatever room is on fire, maybe the dog's (fortunately Grandma is accounted for), saving them from death by smoke inhalation. He also commands them to call 999, but I'm pretty sure they knew that. Faintly unsettling, as I said, mostly because of a sort of vague dreamlike feel to procceedings, aided and abetted by the total lack of any non-diegetic sound other than Keith Barron (or Edward Judd), not to mention the fact that instead of resolving, it just stops, assuming that Keith Judd is authoratitive enough for us not to need a slogan - his gruff instructions are enough for us, thank you. Originally (as only the blind or stupid won't have gathered by the time they've reached this part of the rambling description text) from TMF Extra, a rather splendid site whose hosting punched it in the face a while back.

PIF, aimed at the farming community, I guess. Tells them not to leave pesticide containers lying around, or kids will pick them up and poison themselves with it. Quite harrowing to be honest. It lingers for a while, which makes you wonder what's going to happen next. Quite an effective way of making a PIF. One of the best ways next to realistic gore and bone-crushing emotional impact. From the '70s, as if it wasn't obvious.

Keith Barron rose to fame in the 1960s in Granada TV series The Odd Man. And his star studded career would later reach dizzying heights when he took on the role of Nigel Barton in Stand Up, Nigel Barton and Vote, Vote, Vote, Nigel Barton on Granada TV. More recently, Keith appeared in the Coronation Street cast as George Trench. George was introduced to Weatherfield in 2007 as one of Angela Hawthore's ex-husbands. Later in 2009, Keith starred as the Deputy Mayor in ITV's Benidorm alongside Steve Pemberton and Sheila Reid. He was involved huge romance storyline in November of that year when his character – and Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) and Ivor Priestley (Paul Copley) - proposed to Doreen Fenwick (Barbara Young). While Norris retracted his offer, George's hopes for a wedding were soon dashed when Doreen changed her mind about getting married altogether. But Keith is best-remembered for his character David Pearce in Yorkshire Television sitcom Duty Free. The three-part series was set in Spain and followed two Brit couples – who met on their holidays – clash over class divides. Keith also starred in the likes of Holby City, Doctors, DCI Banks, Casualty and My Family during his mammoth 50 years on telly boxes. A statement from his agent said: "He is survived by his wife Mary to whom he was married for 58 years and his son, Jamie, also an actor."

Another from the archives of Mr Trimble's former website. An ultra-groovy 70s PIF o'funk which looks like it might turn out to be about thick chocolate bars but ends up being about Rabies instead. As is seemingly inevitable for these PIFs, the ultimate suggestion (albeit unintended) is that OMG ALL AMINALS FROM FOREIGN LANDS HAVE TEH DOG AIDS. For some reason King of the Road here seems to enjoy listening to "The Best Ice Cream Jingles In The World...Ever!" while smuggling his disease-ridden cargo.
