Haryana dance troupe presenting a dance in Mizoram during the Chapchar Kut festival. Haryana is a state in North India with its capital at Chandigarh. It came into existence on 1 November 1966 as a newly created state carved out of the Indian Punjab (East Punjab) state on the basis of language. Mizoram, the land of the beautiful Mizo people, is one of the seven sister states of North-east India. One of the oldest festivals of the Mizos held annually in the first week of March is Chapchar Kut, also known as the spring festival of the Mizos. It is celebrated after the completion of their most laborious task of Jhum i.e. clearing of land through burning. Many people from different parts of the country visit Aizawl to witness and take part in the celebrations. During the time of festivity, young men get busy preparing the designated place for the celebrations. Young women get busy beautifying themselves. The elderly are busy sitting under the warm spring sun and recollecting their younger days while children are busy running around excited and getting in the way of everybody else. After everything is prepared, the dancing and singing begins. Some of the famous traditional dances performed during the festivals include ‘Khuallam’ dance, which literally means 'Dance of the Guests'. This dance is performed mainly on the arrival of important guests at the festival. The traditional hand woven Mizo cloth known as ‘Puandum’ is wrapped over the shoulders of the performers and the dance is performed by swaying the cloth. Another dance that embodies the spirit of joy and excitement is the Chheihlam dance. The dance is performed to the accompaniment of a folk song sung by a local singer, indeed one of the favorite dances. It is interesting to see a large percentage of people present in the audience join in the dance eventually! Chailam dance is another popular dance performed on the occasion of 'Chapchar Kut'. In this dance, men and women stand alternately in circles, with the women holding on to the waist of the man, while the man places his hand on the women's shoulder. In the middle of the circle are the musicians who play the drums and a mithun's horn. The dance performed in large groups - Chawnglai zawn dance, is another important dance of the Mizos. Boys and girls standing in rows dance to the beat of drums. Tlanglam is one of the most popular dances performed in various parts of Mizoram. Men and women both take part in this dance. An impressive dance originating from the Pawi and Mara communities in the southern part of Mizoram is ‘Solokia’ dance also known as the War dance. In this dance, the performers wear colourful dresses while the leader is dressed as a warrior. A very old and well-known dance, also a pride of the Mizo and the star attraction is Cheraw dance commonly known as the bamboo dance. Girls in colourful Mizo costumes of ‘Puanchei or Kawrchei’ wrap-arounds worn mostly by Mizo women at the waist and especially hand-made headgear known as Vakiria with elaborate jewelry, dance gracefully to the beats of gongs and drums, jumping between long bamboo poles clubbed together by the men sitting on the ground. This dance is now performed at all festive occasions. Chapchar Kut is now one of India’s most colourful festivals and one that portrays the vibrant tradition and culture of the people of Mizoram. It truly lives up to its tag line – ‘The Mizo festival of Joy’! Such performances evidently provides a unique opportunity for the citizens of India to witness colourful, vibrant and authentic folk dances drawn from various parts of the Haryana. It also goes a long way in preserving, promoting and disseminating Haryanvi folk dances as an important part of the wide spectrum of Haryanvi art and culture. Banchari is the village in Haryana which has contributed for several generations to traditional folk music and has troupes who play the Nagada and dance to the beats of the drums swaying to the pungi. Nagada or Kettledrum is the present version of the Dundubhi, a drum with a narrow bottom and a very wide mouth covered with animal hide and beaten with sticks and the pungi made of bottle gourd which channels air into two reed pipes.Traditionally used in marriages and religious functions and always in the Naubatkhana which is at the entrance of a palace or a fort and housed a number of musical instruments that were played to announce royal arrivals and festivities. Dance Performance: “Rajasthani Folk Dance” by students of Suncity World School, Gurgaon, Haryana - hosted by the Lorraine Music Academy and the LAMP trust on 9th November 2014 – “A Musical Memorial on Children’s Day eve – Remembering Chacha Nehru & Sardar Valabhbhai Patel” Not just an event, but a movement to rekindle the pride and glory of the nation of India through music, song, dance - performing art, visual art, literary art. Over 185 children from across the National Capital Region of Delhi, and the States of Haryana and Rajasthan participated in A MUSICAL MEMORIAL ON CHILDREN’S DAY EVE - "REMEMBERING CHACHA NEHRU & SARDAR VALLABHBHAI PATEL” hosted by Lorraine Music Academy and LAMP Trust on Sunday 9th November 2014, at Epicentre Auditorium, Gurgaon. The concert was dedicated to the National Patriotic Project “Come India Sing Jana Gana Mana” and “Come India Sing For Clean India”. The gathering paid homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, commemorating his recent 139th birth anniversary on 31st October as the National Unity Day. An over-filled auditorium of 400+ people consisting of adults, youth & children displayed their unity for our nation by participating in the Workshop on the National Anthem and singing JANA GANA MANA with passion, pride and precision – in 52 seconds. The gathering also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi by remembering 12th November as the National Broadcasting Services Day. On this day in 1947, Mahatma Gandhi walked into the studios of All India Radio to address the suffering, anguish filled refugees who were camped in Kurukshetra having just faced the agonies & horrors of partition earlier. Mahatma Gandhi recorded a message which was broadcast. We commend the great yeoman service to the nation being done by Prasar Bharati, All India Radio which reaches out to 92% of the country’s area and 99.19% of India’s total population, and Doordarshan which reaches our people across rural and urban India. The gathering also paid homage to Jawaharlal Nehru, on the eve of his 125th birth anniversary on 14th November. The evening was also dedicated to our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi’s initiative of “Bal Swachchata” on the occasion of Children’s Day. Everyone present took the Clean India Pledge and spoke out loud the Swachchata Shapat in Hindi, thus committing themselves to 100 hours of service to this cause every year, ie- 2 hours a week; volunteering work for cleanliness in their homes, schools, work places, neighbourhoods; and to encouraging 100 other persons in doing the same. This evening’s group oath translates to a cumulative commitment of 40,000 hours of voluntary cleanliness work and a commitment to encourage another 40,000 individuals to volunteer a total of 40 lakh hours towards this cause over the next year. At “The (Little) Thinkers’ Forum”, moderated by Aubrey Aloysius, it was evident that children were proud to be Indian citizens and expressed their desire to strive to do their best for (a) protection of women, (b) helping abolish child labour, (c) using their time well and excelling in all they do to make India proud of their achievements, (d) doing something significant for the nation. At “The (Big) Thinkers’ Forum” moderated by Aubrey Aloysius, panellists spoke and shared their views on key topics such as “Are Geniuses born or made” and “Motivating children towards community service and nation building”. Students from Lorraine Music Academy, Pathways World School, Paramlakshya World School, Suncity World School, Lotus Valley International School, Sehwag International School, Rotary Public School expressed their celebration through song, instrumental music, and dance performances. The musical memorial included performances of songs “Ekla Chalo Re”, “Dohas from Kabir” and a medley of our nation’s folk dances, highlighting India’s cultural ethos of “Unity in Diversity”. Lorraine Fiona Aloysius will play on the Piano and will lead a group of singers in singing “Sing A Song”. The musical evening witnessed the launch of the National Singing Project “Come India Sing For Clean India” in support of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. This concert was in aid of raising awareness, support and resources for the National Patriotic Project “Come India Sing Jana Gana Mana”. The National Patriotic Project “Come India Sing Jana Gana Mana” is a clarion call to 1.27 Billion Indians to stand together for one cause – the Unity of India, by singing one song – our National Anthem, in the correct code as laid out in the Constitution of India, which is around 52 seconds. www.ComeIndiaSing.com www.LorraineMusicAcademy.com www.lamp-india.org

The audience paid homage to our 2nd Prime Minister on his recent 112th birth anniversary and remembered the 51st Anniversary of the Indo-Pak war that he victoriously led the nation into, followed by the signing of a peace treaty in Tashkent a few months later. The LAMPstand Band also performed “Tell Me Why”. Professional musicians along with students from Lorraine Music Academy, students from prominent educational institutions from across Haryana & Rajasthan - Pathways World School, Suncity World School, Scottish High International School, Paramlakshya World School, CCA School, Lotus Valley International School, Blue Bells Public School - expressed their celebration through song, instrumental music, and dance performances. The musical memorial included group / choir singing performances of patriotic songs and folk songs and group dance performances set to patriotic and folk music from across India. Gajendra Phogat – Haryana Folk Singer and Bollywood Pop Singer – regaled the audience with his medley of popular patriotic songs, folk songs and film songs. The Musical Memorial included “THE THINKERS’ FORUM CHARCHA” consisting of a live on-stage interaction moderated by Aubrey Aloysius with Anil Shastri and Sunil Shastri, sons of Lal Bahadur Shastri, delving into the noble qualities, ideals, ethics, values & principles of our exemplary National Hero, so as to pass them on to inspire our next generation of citizens for positive nation building. Article 51A of the Constitution of India states that “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to cherish and follow the noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for freedom; to uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.” Anil Shastri & Sunil Shastri shared memorable anecdotes about their first hand experiences with their great father – as a father, and as a Prime Minister. As his contribution to the Nation Building Project COME INDIA SING, Anil Shastri sang the songs “Aa Chal Ke Tujhe”, “O Nigahe Mastaana” & “Main Hoon Jhoom Jhoom Khumru” that were made popular by Kishore Kumar. The evening was a memorable and enjoyable one that brought fond memories and tears to the eyes of many. The evening ended with the family members of Lal Bahadur Shastri and the entire audience, singing our National Anthem JANA GANA MANA with pride, passion, and precision – in 52 seconds.

The dancers come together to the sound of 'Tasha', 'Nagara' and 'Dhol'. They run about the men hitting with the 'Koraras' while men defend themselves as best as they can with 'Shuntis'.
