Keep your iTunes Library on your internal drive, but move your music to an external drive. That way you move the bulk of your files to your external drive, but keep all of the primary functionality of your iTunes Library on your internal one.

Recently purchased a new Mac? Today I'm showing several ways to migrate your data from an old Mac to a NEW one. There are several methods and I am going to discuss which method is best for different situations. There are 4 ways (essentially) to migrate data from an old mac to a new one. They are: 1. Migration Assistant 2. Restore from Time Machine backup 3. Use cloud services like iCloud, Dropbox or Google Drive 4. Manually Migration Assistant is by far the easiest, but it isn't for everyone. If you've migrated from Mac to Mac in the past, this means any junk that's floating around on your system is coming along for the ride. This also isn't a good option if your hard drive is actively failing. In order to use Migration Assistant, just open the utility on your old Mac (just search for "Migration Assistant") and follow the prompts. You'll then open your new Mac, on the 3rd or 4th screen it will ask if you are going to be migrating data from an old Mac. Select this option and make sure both computers are on the same wireless network. This process can take several hours to as long as a full day. Time Machine is a great method to use if your hard drive does fail, but you've taken the time to back everything up to an external drive. This will not migrate license numbers for software so have the expectation that any software that does require a serial number will need to either be re-authorized or re-purchased. iCloud or other cloud services like Dropbox and Google Drive can be great options to move your data if your old computer has begun to slow down and has entered the beginning stages of hard drive failure. If your old Mac is running MacOS Sierra (or newer) just enable the Desktop and Documents saving feature. It's located in System Preferences....iCloud....iCloud Drive... Options... and it's the first item in the list. Then, you'll need to move your most important data to either the Desktop or (preferably) Documents folder. Be sure to give it time to upload to the cloud (upload times are usually 1/10th that of download speeds). When you get your new Mac, just enter in your iCloud information and all your data will come back down onto your computer. Manually moving data is a great option for anyone with simple needs and when combined with cloud services like iCloud (especially for contacts, calendars and photos). So, if you are like me, your Apple Photos library is fairly large, but you also like to make sure you have it well and truly backed up in case anything untoward should occur. My Macbook only has a 250gb hard drive, and I need access to more than 250gb worth of files in my Dropbox on a regular basis, so I keep it on a 2tb external hard drive. As my Apple Photos library has increased in size I decided it would be good to move it to an external hard drive, and even better if I could move it into my Dropbox. That would mean not only do I have the iCloud backup of my photos and videos, but I would also have a Dropbox backup as well. It's easy to move the library itself, but if you want to connect it to iCloud it is a little bit more finicky. Here is how I did it. Gear I use and recommend: Where you can find me: My website: Facebook Twitter: Instagram: Google+:

AFAIK, this won't work with Sierra, but should work with other OSes (even High Sierra I've been told). In this video I show to change the location of iOS device backups made in iTunes. The whole thing is fairly simple and should only take a few minutes. Thanks for watching and please don't forget to like and subscribe. I am now also on Patreon and would appreciate it if you checked out my Patreon page: Also, here's the Terminal command (please watch the video, as merely typing this command into Terminal won't do anything): ln -s /Volumes/INSERT HARD DRIVE NAME HERE/MobileSync/Backup ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup

It's easy. All you need to do is to first create a "link" or "junction" between the default iPhone backup location and your external drive, then do the backup as usual with iTunes. For windows users: To create the link, open a command window, and type in: mklink /J "C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\YOUR_TARGET_DIR" and "enter". That's it! For Mac users: it works the same way for a Mac. launch the “Terminal” application, create the symbolic link: ln -s /Volumes/ExternalFileStorage/YourExternalBackFolder/Backup/ ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/ Once the symbolic link has been created, open iTunes and start the backup as usual.
