Indian Ocean have been one of India's most prolific bands over the past 2 decades. This year they mark their 25th year with their biggest album yet. Titled Tandanu, the album features 7 new tracks with 7 different collaborators. Each track also has an exclusive "Making Of" video with behind the scenes footage of the band jamming and brainstorming with the artists. Chitu Bhil a chieftain of the Bhil community back in 1850 fought against the British oppression in India. But when the British defeated and killed him , they turned his modest bungalow into a police station. Even today, the Sorwa Police station is Chitu's bungalow... Rahul learnt this song in February 1993, and just two days later he found himself locked up in Chitu's bungalow!! He sang the song while in the lockup and the jailer was so pleased with the singing that he brought them wonderful hot food from his house to eat. The song cycles in 10 beats and the band had made a couple of riffs in 10/4. They thought this would be an ideal song for Selva to collaborate, as the 10 beat cycle might excite him. Selva heard through the song twice through and then jumped in and elevated the song to a new level... He threw in a korvai (A set beat composition in the Carnatic style), and some great take-offs in between... Titled Tandanu, the album features 7 new tracks with 7 different collaborators. Each track also has an exclusive "Making Of" video with behind the scenes footage of the band jamming and brainstorming with the artists. The second episode features percussion maestro Karsh Kale. The lilting start to this piece led to its working title, 'Sweet' ... Once the band decided to collaborate with Karsh on this song, he took the song and moved it into a very jazzy space, and Sanjeev Sharma's lyrics turned it into a song about the power of today's youth. This is the first song from the new album that the band has played on stage after the recording For more updates: Like us on: www.facebook.com/timesmusic Follow us on: www.twitter.com/timesmusicindia Join our Circle: www.google.com/+TimesMusic

In this third Episode, the band will jam with the musical genius, Shankar Mahadevan to create the title track of the album. Tandanu is an old Kannada folk song from the Belur-Helabid region of Karnataka. Rahul heard his aunt sing it when he was really young and it stayed with him all his life. His aunt is one of three sisters (LG Vimala, LG Sumitra, LG Kamala) who used to perform on AIR in Bangalore in the 50s and 60s. In fact they released some of the folk songs they used to sing as an album in the early 2000s. The vocal structure made it a natural for Shankar Mahadevan to collaborate. They did a version of this song live at the Storm Festival in Coorg in early 2013, after a day with Shankar at their rehearsal pad in Delhi. They worked out the Structure of the song and laid a dummy track all ready for Shankar to come in and blow them away!! Titled Tandanu, the album features 7 new tracks with 7 different collaborators. Each track also has an exclusive "Making Of" video with behind the scenes footage of the band jamming and brainstorming with the artists. This first episode features the track "Gar Ho Sake" done with Shubha Mudgal. This powerful and moving song is one of the anthems of people's movements in north India, and as such was familiar to Amit, Rahul, and of course, to Shubhaji. And, shockingly, the poet is unknown! We had originally planned to do a completely different song with Shubhaji, a Kabir Das composition, but it didn't quite take off. Amit Kilam suggested Gar Ho Sake, and instant magic happened. We have changed parts of songs, changing scales, but have kept the basic tune intact in the beginning. The song literally translates to: If possible, light a lamp to dispel the darkness of this oppressive state. Titled Tandanu, the album features 7 new tracks with 7 different collaborators. Each track also has an exclusive "Making Of" video with behind the scenes footage of the band jamming and brainstorming with the artists. Another song Rahul learnt in the Narmada Valley way back in 1993, from a beautiful young Bhili trible woman named Jimli, in the village of Turkheda in Gujarat. She sings that she's waiting at the side of the road for her sister who's coming in a bus. While working on the song. Amit came up with this beautiful Kashmiri tune, and we thought we should convert the song into a song about displacement. The village of Turkheda has been drowned by a dam, and Kashmiris are similarly Displaced from their home. The band collaborated with Vishal Dadlani on this song and he took this thought and ran with it, saying "I'm a Sindhi, and we Sindhis too Have been displaced from Our land..." So you have Roday, a song about displacement with lines in five languages (in order of how they appear in the song) : Bhili, Hindi, Sindhi, Persian, Kashmiri. Titled Tandanu, the album features 7 new tracks with 7 different collaborators. Each track also has an exclusive "Making Of" video with behind the scenes footage of the band jamming and brainstorming with the artists. The fifth song on the project sees Indian Ocean collaborate with one of the Grammy Award winning artist Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt. The vocal lines in this song are partly influenced by a collaboration they did with four Santhali musicians in 2013. But Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt took the vocal lines in a new direction, and they ended up with a highspeed climax in the Hindustani Classical mode. Their longtime lyricist Sanjeev Sharma interpreted the music to be about the circle of life and creation, hence the name. This is the only song on the album to be recorded without a metronome. Panditji's mastery of the Mohan Veena certainly stretched the band to the limit of their playing abilities! This is the cover version of Indian Ocean's Tandanu which featured Shankar Mahadevan. This cover has a unique blend of live vocal looping and Tabla. Live looping is the recording and playback of a piece of music in real-time and the same has been done here for processing, recording and looping the vocals with various effects on them. This piece explores the Raag Bhoop / Bhoopali / Bhupali. and brings a twist to the original song with robust sawaal jawab / Question Answer (Hindustani Classical Music).
