TO GIVE WITHOUT A REASON Narayanan Krishnan (Born 1981) is an Indian chef turned social worker. He quit his career as a leading chef and began supplying meals to the homeless in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, beginning in 2002. With a degree in hand and future in sight, Narayanan was on his way to be an award-winning chef at a 5-star restaurant in Switzerland. All it took to change his plans forever was a walk on the streets of his home town of Madurai, India. It was then that he was taken aback by an elderly man lying on the side of the road. This man was starving and filthy. Narayanan reached out to this old man who placed his frail, wrinkled dirty hand upon his. This was a defining moment. Narayanan decided in this moment that helping this man and those in need would be a life well-lived, providing him the happiness and fulfillment he had yet to experience until this moment. Though many of the people helped by Narayanan need much more than a meal, it was a good place to start and so Akshaya's Helping in H.E.L.P. Trust was established as a charitable organization based in India. Starting in 2002, utilizing his own personal savings, Narayanan fed around 30 people. In 2003, he began to serve freshly-cooked meals, and has since served over 1.7 million meals as of August 2011. --- In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Read More: http://www.GistOnThis.com Hero is a very strong word, but it fits 34-year-old Narayanan Krishnan perfectly. During the last 12 years, he has served over 1.5 million meals to India's homeless, mostly people abandoned by their families, either suffering from mental conditions or too old to care for themselves. Back in 2002, young Narayanan Krishnan was already an award-winning chef working in a high-class restaurant for the prestigious Taj Hotels, and close to securing a job with another 5-star hotel, in Switzerland. Just before heading off to Europe, he traveled to his home town of Madurai, to visit his parents, where witnessed a scene that changed the course of his life forever. "I saw a very old man eating his own human waste for food," Krishnan told CNN. "It really hurt me so much. I was literally shocked for a second. After that, I started feeding that man and decided this is what I should do the rest of my lifetime." Although he was a Brahmin -- an upper class Hindu -- destined for a successful career as a chef, Narayanan decided to give it all up and dedicate his life to helping those who couldn't help themselves. Shaken by the scene he has witnessed in Madurai, he quit his job within a week, convinced his destiny wasn't to cook elaborate dishes for the rich and famous, but provide sustenance to those who needed it most. "That night I thought, what am I doing? I am selling a plate of fried rice for ten dollars in my hotel where people come and have food for fantasy, fun, joy and recreation. Not for hunger. They eat only half portion of it and leave half of in the plate. It was a spark, a very powerful spark that I had," the young chef said about the event that made him what he is today. By 2003, Narayanan Krishnan had founded Akshaya Trust, a nonprofit through which he has already served over one and a half million meals to India's homeless. The name of his organization is Sanskrit for "undecaying" or "imperishable", and was chosen to signify that human compassion should never decay or perish. Also, according to Hindu mythology, the Goddess Annapoorani used her Akshaya bowl to feed the hungry, without it ever depleting. Krishnan's day begins at 4 am, every morning, as he and his team cover 125 miles in a donated van, scouring every nook and cranny of Madurai in search of homeless people in need of a hot meal. The dishes he prepares consist of simple, vegetarian food he cooks, packs and oftentimes hand-feeds himself to over 400 "clients" per day. He is frequently forced to work in temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and deal with hostile and paranoid people suffering from mental illnesses, but these difficult conditions only strengthen his resolve. "The panic, suffering of the human hunger is the driving force of me and my team members of Akshaya," Narayanan says. "I get this energy from the people. The food which I cook ... the enjoyment which they get is the energy. I see the soul. I want to save my people." Apart from food, he also carries a comb, scissors and razor, and is trained in eight different haircut styles to give his clients that extra bit of dignity they so desperately need. Providing food for hundreds of people every day costs money, and according to a 2010 report by CNN, the sponsored donations received by Akshaya Trust only cover 22 days out of the month. The rest he subsidizes himself with the monthly rent he receives for a house his grandfather gave him. That leaves him with virtually nothing for himself, but luckily he can still rely on his once unsupportive parents for help. "They had a lot of pain because they had spent a lot on my education," he said. "I asked my mother, 'Please come with me, see what I am doing.' After coming back home, my mother said, 'You feed all those people, the rest of the lifetime I am there, I will feed you.' I'm living for Akshaya. My parents are taking care of me." "I used to think everything is alike -- beggars... mentally ill... so I used to think everyone alike but he taught me the difference" Narayanan Lakshmi, Krishnan's mother, told ABC News. I was not a teacher, he was a teacher to me. People used to ask me, how did you brought up your... I didn't bring up my child. He only brought up me. (laughing) That is the irony". In 2010, Narayanan Krishnan made the CNN Heroes 2010 list, a distinction that made his story known to the whole world, and helped raise awareness to India's homeless problem.

If you don't know anything about Krishnan, start off by watching this CNN Heroes special: http://vimeo.com/17689185 I really hope nobody gets the wrong impression from this video - I'm not bashing what they do at all. It was probably the most unique experience I've had in all my experiences with NGOs and social projects so far. It was clear that Krishnan understands the need of exposure for funding purposes, but he also is extremely protective of his schedule and of the people he works with. It must be that diligence and professionalism that got him the job in the Swiss 5-star hotel that he decided not to take. I didn't get any more of an experience of Akshaya than you can at home...literally 10 of the 30 minutes I was with him was spent in front of a TV watching Keifer Sutherland and Anderson Cooper (or one of those guys) introduce him at the CNN Heroes awards show, followed by the video in the link above. Any questions I asked, he immediately referred me to their website and graciously informed me that I can get any details imaginable about their work there. Oh - and the cheesy text animations? That's just 'cause I've been playing with stuff for Caught Doin' Good...I don't think they're usable long-term, but I worked hard to make them, so thought I'd at least put them out once. :P This video actually isn't a what I'm going for with Caught Doin' Good...the essential part of CDG is experience and time spent involved with good projects. But it's related enough, so I thought I'd upload it anyway. ^^ Caught Doin' Good is a project under construction that hopes to leverage the power of online video, YouTube, and social media to inspire people across the globe to go out and "catch" people doin' good around their own areas or in places they travel. My name is Philip Cotsford - I'm developing the project now, and will continue to develop it for a few years to come. Keep an eye out for actual Caught Doin' Good project videos coming soon! All pictures are the property of Akshaya Trust (Krishnan's organization): http://akshayatrust.org/ To make a donation to Akshaya Trust, just click on the PayPal button on the bottom-left of the website. I can guarantee that it will be faithfully logged by Krishnan's relative (cousin's wife, I think?) who maintains all the accounts. You might even get an email from Andrew thanking you for it. Aside from outside supporters, there are only about 4 volunteers (Krishnan, Andrew, the lady who does the accounts, and maybe 1 other?) involved in the whole thing, along with a few paid staff (like the cooks and assistants you saw in my video) Wanna know where I am now or what's going on with me? CNN Hero Narayanan Krishnan gave up his job, his way of life, to spread love for his fellow man. Narayanan spends his days, every day, feeding the homeless and mentally ill in his hometown in India. Narayanan chose a path of love, while most of us follow paths of hatred, greed, anger, jealousy, obsession and consumption, Narayanan made one simple decision, LOVE. Please spread this video, with a world in complete disarray, if this kind of caring and love catches on to even a very small percentage of people on this planet, the energy could change immensely. Help spread the love!

Narayanan Krishnan, honoured as one of CNN's 'Heroes of 2010' talks about the need to have a look at the destitute and homeless in this fast paced world. A celebrated chef from the culinary heavens of Taj, Bangalore with future prospects at an elite position in Switzerland, Narayanan Krishnan was all set to define his future. His plans took a sudden detour when strolling along the walkways of his home town, Madurai , he came across an old man in ragged clothes sitting by the side in a pathetic state. This image had a lasting impact on Mr. Krishnan’s mind. He immediately proceeded to a nearby eatery and bought food for the old man. The old man ate the food vociferously with tears of happiness crinkling in his eyes. Mr. Krishnan went on to set up the Akshaya Trust in 2003 to help the needy and poor in Madurai. He ensures food and shelter to around 425 indigent and elderly people. He was honoured as one of CNN’s ‘Heroes of 2010’. Narayanan Krishnan is an example of giving a second glance to the destitute and homeless in this fast-paced world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
