Survey: Nathan Klingbeil, Ph.D., associate dean for the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), explains how Wright State's innovative curriculum reform benefited its engineering students. In 2003, CECS developed a new model for teaching mathematics to its engineering majors. The college created EGR 101, an introductory course that relates first-year math and science classes directly to engineering applications. The course is now the cornerstone of Wright State's engineering program with more than 300 students taking it each year. EGR 101 has resulted in better calculus performance and increased retention and graduation rates. The program has been emulated by institutions across the country and is now being offered to high school students as part of several pre-college programs. For more information, please visit:

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The power of words and the importance of thinking well need to be reconsidered. How is language, something that is so core to the human experience, so carelessly tossed around, or even worse, distorted beyond recognition? Why aren’t we fascinated with words? What has happened to our child-like curiosity? Words, so much more than the sum of their letters, have the power of life and death. Nathan Adams, a dyslexic, wants to challenge you to think differently about words. If we do not reclaim the vitality of words, our laziness with language will perpetuate the epidemic of not truly knowing what we are saying. Commonly used words, such as love, pain, forgiveness, and "I'm sorry" will continue to be carelessly defined and ignorantly recycled. It is time for the reclamation of our words. Nathan Bennett Adams was born and raised in Frederick, Maryland. At the age of four, Nathan was diagnosed with a severe form of dyslexia, titled "Auditory Processing Learning Deficit." This learning disability shadowed much of his childhood, which was filled with a frustration towards learning and feeling mastered by words while reading. Though learning was always a battlefield, soccer quickly became an avenue for Nathan to excel. His skill in the sport soon landed him opportunities to play with professional teams in Brazil, Argentina, Holland, and Germany, as well as join the teams of West Virginia University, Bryan College, and the Chattanooga Football Club. Over the last few years, Nathan's struggle with language began to morph into a newfound love of studying: communication, philosophy and words. In an ironic twist, Nathan pursued a bachelor's degree in Communication, the very skill that had been so elusive in his life. Nathan is now more likely to be found reading or writing than lacing up his soccer cleats, encompassing a full-time scholar and full-time student. A catalyst to this change was Nathan's growing love for Spoken Word Poetry, using it as a vehicle to share his ever-growing thoughts and challenging ideas. More than most, Nathan understands those who do not treasure the mind, having once felt completely mastered by language himself. He now thrives on sharing his mind with a variety of audiences at surrounding colleges, high schools, and conferences. He hopes to restore those who have an ear to the power of words. Nathan and his wife, Anna, live in Evensville, Tennessee. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Your request is my pleasure my friend!! You want a version that you can sing-along to like a videoke/karaoke my friend? Your wish is my command!! Here you go! sing your heart out!! It's soooo delicious to sing this song right my friend?? This is my instrumental acoustic guitar minus one (no vocals) cover of Rivermaya's massive 2003 hit opm R&B song from their massive album Between the Stars and Waves. Balisong was written by Rico Blanco, The song apparently began from a guitar riff by then Rivermaya lead guitarist Kakoy Legaspi. Some info about Rivermaya from their wikipedia: Rivermaya is a Filipino rock band. Formed in 1994, it is one of several bands who spearheaded the 1990s Philippine alternative rock explosion. Rivermaya is currently composed of original members Mark Escueta and Nathan Azarcon, together with Mike Elgar and Ryan Peralta. Former members include Rico Blanco, who had been the original songwriter of the band and vocalist Bamboo Mañalac, who later formed the band Bamboo and later went on his solo career. Rivermaya is the fourteenth biggest-selling artists/act in the Philippines. This song is the Original Sound Track of the film "100 Tula Para Kay Stella" Little info about the film: In 2004, Fidel Lansangan (JC Santos) and Stella Puno (Bela Padilla) meets each other as freshmen college students in Pampanga pursuing a bachelor's degree in Psychology. They became friends despite difference in their personalities; Fidel is an honor student with a speech impediment and loves poetry while Stella is a rocker with a tough and confident attitude who prefers to jam with her band rather than to do her studies.[2] Fidel begins to write poems to express his love to Stella but does not have the confidence to read these to her. Stella on her had various boyfriends as she pursues her goal of securing a recording contract. The film's story spans for four whole years of Fidel and Stella's college life and revolves around the question whether Fidel can muster enough confidence to read his poems to Stella by the time he finishes writing his 100th poem for her. Cast[edit] JC Santos as Fidel Lansangan Bela Padilla as Stella Puno Mayton Eugenio as Danica Caleb Santos as Von Prince Stefan as Chuck Ana Abad Santos as Ms. Bardozo Production[edit] 100 Tula Para Kay Stella was produced under Viva Films. Jason Paul Laxamana served as both the writer and director of the film. The story of the film was inspired from Laxamana's own life experiences. Donicia Blanton was offered a full scholarship to Smith College in her home state of Massachusetts, but when she visited LaGrange College during Presidential Scholars Weekend, she was drawn in by the Southern hospitality, the beauty of the campus and the quality of its science programs. "Originally I really wanted to get away from the snow," says the double major in biology and psychology. "It's a 20- to 26-hour drive from my home in Massachusetts to Georgia. When I visited here, I had a couple of schools in mind, not just LaGrange, and I really wasn't familiar with the culture of the South. But when I visited it for the scholarship competition, my first thought was, 'I love this place.' It just sucked me in and shot up to my No. 1 choice." Three years later, the junior is not ready to leave. "It's kind of sad to think that I will be graduating pretty soon," she says. "I really love LaGrange College because it has really given me the chance to take advantage of so many things that have enhanced my education. For instance, I never thought I'd be wearing a lab coat as an undergrad and researching protein in cancerous and non-cancerous cells." Donicia says she loves not only how her studies differ between the areas of psychology and biology but also enjoys the "a-ha" moments when the two come together, which is why she plans to continue her studies by earning a doctoral degree in psychology to specialize in in-patient clinical psychology. She currently is president of Psi Chi, the college's psychology honor society, and has had some of her research work published. "The professors here really teach you to think," she says. "They don't hand things to you; they don't spoon-feed you. It's a challenge sometimes, but once you overcome that challenge, it's so satisfying. It's worth it to really be able to step up and meet the challenges of your professors." Donicia considered pursuing her love of dance before she committed to college, as she has practiced jazz, ballet, modern, hip-hop, liturgical and African dance for 13 years. She toured nationwide in a dance troupe as early as 14 years old and also danced with the Dance Theater of Harlem. She also was invited to tour in Zimbabwe. At LaGrange College, Donicia was chosen as one of 12 junior Servant Scholars, who each engage in a year-long internship with a local non-profit agency as part of their service-learning experience. Donicia serves the Boys and Girls Club of West Georgia, where she initiated a dance team last fall for young girls. "I feel like the program doesn't just teach the girls how to dance," she says. "It's been tailored to help teach them responsibility, how to be prepared, how to step up and better themselves. They're taught to show up on time, to bring their water bottle and to come with their dance clothes, and if they don't do those things, they can't participate for the day. It's not an effort to be mean, but an effort to teach them how to commit to things, which is a lesson they may not happen to get in the environment they live in." Donicia says she has enjoyed seeing the girls grow through the dance experience. "When they first started and didn't come prepared, they might just shrug it off and blame someone else," she says. "But now they realize the consequences of not coming in or not being prepared; they take it upon themselves and apologize and promise to do better. And the next day they come in definitely prepared, even a little bit early sometimes." Another Servant Scholar, Alex Rodriguez, began teaching violin and music theory at the Boys and Girls Club when Donicia began the dance program. "We're both taking aspects of the arts to the Boys and Girls Club," she says. "We feel like the kids aren't just getting a new hobby. They're getting a taste of culture early in life. Even if they don't want to become a professional violinist of dancer, it gives them something worthwhile to do, sometime to look forward to and something to be proud of." Donicia knows where the children have come from, as she was once a member of the Boys and Girls Club herself as a young child. "I just hope I bring a bit of positivity to their lives because I know firsthand how much that means to them," she says. "I went to the Boys and Girls Club when I was young, and I just remember feeling like people didn't care, that people were giving up on me. It's important for these girls to see that people care about them and want to spend their time showing them a new skill and not overlooking them."

So what are you gonna do with your life? "You should be a lawyer, a doctor, an accountant, a consultant, blah, blah, blah. Everywhere you turn people try to tell you who to be and what to do with your life. We call that the noise. Block it. Shed it. Leave it for the conformists. As a generation, we need to get back to focusing on individuality. Self-construction rather than mass production. Define your own road in life instead of traveling down someone else's. Listen to yourself. Your road is the open road. Find it." —Mike and Nathan After college Mike Marriner and Nathan Gebhard had no idea what to do with their lives. All they'd been exposed to were standard career paths like doctor and consultant—roads that didn't fit them at all. To see what else was out there they took a roadtrip across the nation in a huge forty-foot RV to meet with people who had successfully defined their own paths in life—including the chairman of Starbucks; a lobsterman from Maine; the director of Saturday Night Live; the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic; the first female Supreme Court Justice of the United States; head stylist for Madonna; and the CEO of National Geographic Ventures. All told, one hundred and forty people candidly shared their stories about how they got from college to the present. Now in Roadtrip Nation, Mike and Nathan share the most compelling tales with you. Along the way, they explain how you, too, can get out there and meet people on your own. From making cold calls to asking stimulating interview questions, Roadtrip Nation will give you the tools to create a life that you'll look back on and say: "I was true to myself every step of the way."

Adam Grant stops by the Googleplex for Leading@Google to discuss his latest work, "Give and Take." You can find it on Google Play. From the publicist: Give and Take changes our fundamental ideas about how to succeed—at work and in life. For generations, we have focused on the individual drivers of success: passion, hard work, talent, and luck. But in today's dramatically reconfigured world, success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. Give and Take illuminates what effective networking, collaboration, influence, negotiation, and leadership skills have in common. Using his own groundbreaking research as the youngest tenured professor at Wharton, Grant examines the surprising forces that shape why some people rise to the top of the success ladder while others sink to the bottom. In professional interactions, it turns out that most people operate as either takers, matchers, or givers. Whereas takers strive to get as much as possible from others and matchers aim to trade evenly, givers are the rare breed of people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return. These styles have a dramatic impact on success. Although some givers get exploited and burn out, the rest achieve extraordinary results across a wide range of industries. Combining cutting-edge evidence with captivating stories, this landmark book shows how one of America's best networkers developed his connections, why the creative genius behind one of the most popular shows in television history toiled for years in anonymity, how a basketball executive responsible for multiple draft busts transformed his franchise into a winner, and how we could have anticipated Enron's demise four years before the company collapsed—without ever looking at a single number.

Google Tech Talk January 21, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Linda Nathan. Boston Arts Academy comprises an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student body, yet 95 percent of its graduates are accepted to college. This remarkable success rate, says Principal Linda Nathan, is in large part due to asking the right questions and being open to seeking answers collaboratively with faculty, parents, and the students themselves. In her new book, The Hardest Questions Aren't on the Test: Lessons from an Innovative Urban School, Nathan gives insights into the process of grappling with these questions, attempting to implement solutions, and evaluating the outcomes. Stories that are inspirational as well as heartbreaking reveal the missteps and failures—as well as the successes. Nathan doesnt claim to have all the answers, but seeks to share the philosophies and practices that have worked for the BAA. Principals, educators, and parents will find many new ideas to bring to their own schools. Chapters focus on questions all schools can consider, such as: · How and why does a school develop a shared vision of what it stands for? · What makes a great teacher, and how can a principal help good teachers improve? · Why must schools talk openly about race and achievement, and what happens when they do? Speaker Info: Linda Nathan Linda was instrumental in starting Boston's first performing-arts middle school, and was a driving force behind the creation of Fenway High School, recognized nationally for its innovative educational strategies and school-to-work programs. She is also a co-founder and board member of the Center for Collaborative Education in Boston, a nonprofit education reform organization dedicated to creating more equitable and democratic schools. She was named 1990 Teacher of the Year by Channel 5 "Chronicle" in Boston, and from 1995 to 1998 she served on the National Academy of Science's Commission for the Science of Learning. From one of the world's leading data scientists, a landmark tour of the new science of idea flow, offering revolutionary insights into the mysteries of collective intelligence and social influence. If the Big Data revolution has a presiding genius, it is MIT's Alex "Sandy" Pentland. Over years of groundbreaking experiments, he has distilled remarkable discoveries significant enough to become the bedrock of a whole new scientific field: social physics. Humans have more in common with bees than we like to admit: We're social creatures first and foremost. Our most important habits of action—and most basic notions of common sense—are wired into us through our coordination in social groups. Social physics is about idea flow, the way human social networks spread ideas and transform those ideas into behaviors. - from Penguin Press. See more at:
