Survey: Nathan Klingbeil, Ph.D., associate dean for the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), explains how Wright State's innovative curriculum reform benefited its engineering students. In 2003, CECS developed a new model for teaching mathematics to its engineering majors. The college created EGR 101, an introductory course that relates first-year math and science classes directly to engineering applications. The course is now the cornerstone of Wright State's engineering program with more than 300 students taking it each year. EGR 101 has resulted in better calculus performance and increased retention and graduation rates. The program has been emulated by institutions across the country and is now being offered to high school students as part of several pre-college programs. For more information, please visit:

You can get this track, and the other movements of this piece (recorded on my 'Ascension' album) from - Bandcamp: Help me make more videos and music tracks by supporting me on Patreon! A simple little something to welcome in the New Year; a return to my classical roots for my last video of 2013....This is the first movement from this lovely baroque work where both violin parts are absolutely identical, but played a bar apart! Filmed at sunset outside my house, using the fast-changing light to differentiate the two violins....

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The power of words and the importance of thinking well need to be reconsidered. How is language, something that is so core to the human experience, so carelessly tossed around, or even worse, distorted beyond recognition? Why aren’t we fascinated with words? What has happened to our child-like curiosity? Words, so much more than the sum of their letters, have the power of life and death. Nathan Adams, a dyslexic, wants to challenge you to think differently about words. If we do not reclaim the vitality of words, our laziness with language will perpetuate the epidemic of not truly knowing what we are saying. Commonly used words, such as love, pain, forgiveness, and "I'm sorry" will continue to be carelessly defined and ignorantly recycled. It is time for the reclamation of our words. Nathan Bennett Adams was born and raised in Frederick, Maryland. At the age of four, Nathan was diagnosed with a severe form of dyslexia, titled "Auditory Processing Learning Deficit." This learning disability shadowed much of his childhood, which was filled with a frustration towards learning and feeling mastered by words while reading. Though learning was always a battlefield, soccer quickly became an avenue for Nathan to excel. His skill in the sport soon landed him opportunities to play with professional teams in Brazil, Argentina, Holland, and Germany, as well as join the teams of West Virginia University, Bryan College, and the Chattanooga Football Club. Over the last few years, Nathan's struggle with language began to morph into a newfound love of studying: communication, philosophy and words. In an ironic twist, Nathan pursued a bachelor's degree in Communication, the very skill that had been so elusive in his life. Nathan is now more likely to be found reading or writing than lacing up his soccer cleats, encompassing a full-time scholar and full-time student. A catalyst to this change was Nathan's growing love for Spoken Word Poetry, using it as a vehicle to share his ever-growing thoughts and challenging ideas. More than most, Nathan understands those who do not treasure the mind, having once felt completely mastered by language himself. He now thrives on sharing his mind with a variety of audiences at surrounding colleges, high schools, and conferences. He hopes to restore those who have an ear to the power of words. Nathan and his wife, Anna, live in Evensville, Tennessee. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Adam Grant stops by the Googleplex for Leading@Google to discuss his latest work, "Give and Take." You can find it on Google Play. From the publicist: Give and Take changes our fundamental ideas about how to succeed—at work and in life. For generations, we have focused on the individual drivers of success: passion, hard work, talent, and luck. But in today's dramatically reconfigured world, success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. Give and Take illuminates what effective networking, collaboration, influence, negotiation, and leadership skills have in common. Using his own groundbreaking research as the youngest tenured professor at Wharton, Grant examines the surprising forces that shape why some people rise to the top of the success ladder while others sink to the bottom. In professional interactions, it turns out that most people operate as either takers, matchers, or givers. Whereas takers strive to get as much as possible from others and matchers aim to trade evenly, givers are the rare breed of people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return. These styles have a dramatic impact on success. Although some givers get exploited and burn out, the rest achieve extraordinary results across a wide range of industries. Combining cutting-edge evidence with captivating stories, this landmark book shows how one of America's best networkers developed his connections, why the creative genius behind one of the most popular shows in television history toiled for years in anonymity, how a basketball executive responsible for multiple draft busts transformed his franchise into a winner, and how we could have anticipated Enron's demise four years before the company collapsed—without ever looking at a single number.

Donicia Blanton was offered a full scholarship to Smith College in her home state of Massachusetts, but when she visited LaGrange College during Presidential Scholars Weekend, she was drawn in by the Southern hospitality, the beauty of the campus and the quality of its science programs. "Originally I really wanted to get away from the snow," says the double major in biology and psychology. "It's a 20- to 26-hour drive from my home in Massachusetts to Georgia. When I visited here, I had a couple of schools in mind, not just LaGrange, and I really wasn't familiar with the culture of the South. But when I visited it for the scholarship competition, my first thought was, 'I love this place.' It just sucked me in and shot up to my No. 1 choice." Three years later, the junior is not ready to leave. "It's kind of sad to think that I will be graduating pretty soon," she says. "I really love LaGrange College because it has really given me the chance to take advantage of so many things that have enhanced my education. For instance, I never thought I'd be wearing a lab coat as an undergrad and researching protein in cancerous and non-cancerous cells." Donicia says she loves not only how her studies differ between the areas of psychology and biology but also enjoys the "a-ha" moments when the two come together, which is why she plans to continue her studies by earning a doctoral degree in psychology to specialize in in-patient clinical psychology. She currently is president of Psi Chi, the college's psychology honor society, and has had some of her research work published. "The professors here really teach you to think," she says. "They don't hand things to you; they don't spoon-feed you. It's a challenge sometimes, but once you overcome that challenge, it's so satisfying. It's worth it to really be able to step up and meet the challenges of your professors." Donicia considered pursuing her love of dance before she committed to college, as she has practiced jazz, ballet, modern, hip-hop, liturgical and African dance for 13 years. She toured nationwide in a dance troupe as early as 14 years old and also danced with the Dance Theater of Harlem. She also was invited to tour in Zimbabwe. At LaGrange College, Donicia was chosen as one of 12 junior Servant Scholars, who each engage in a year-long internship with a local non-profit agency as part of their service-learning experience. Donicia serves the Boys and Girls Club of West Georgia, where she initiated a dance team last fall for young girls. "I feel like the program doesn't just teach the girls how to dance," she says. "It's been tailored to help teach them responsibility, how to be prepared, how to step up and better themselves. They're taught to show up on time, to bring their water bottle and to come with their dance clothes, and if they don't do those things, they can't participate for the day. It's not an effort to be mean, but an effort to teach them how to commit to things, which is a lesson they may not happen to get in the environment they live in." Donicia says she has enjoyed seeing the girls grow through the dance experience. "When they first started and didn't come prepared, they might just shrug it off and blame someone else," she says. "But now they realize the consequences of not coming in or not being prepared; they take it upon themselves and apologize and promise to do better. And the next day they come in definitely prepared, even a little bit early sometimes." Another Servant Scholar, Alex Rodriguez, began teaching violin and music theory at the Boys and Girls Club when Donicia began the dance program. "We're both taking aspects of the arts to the Boys and Girls Club," she says. "We feel like the kids aren't just getting a new hobby. They're getting a taste of culture early in life. Even if they don't want to become a professional violinist of dancer, it gives them something worthwhile to do, sometime to look forward to and something to be proud of." Donicia knows where the children have come from, as she was once a member of the Boys and Girls Club herself as a young child. "I just hope I bring a bit of positivity to their lives because I know firsthand how much that means to them," she says. "I went to the Boys and Girls Club when I was young, and I just remember feeling like people didn't care, that people were giving up on me. It's important for these girls to see that people care about them and want to spend their time showing them a new skill and not overlooking them."

So what are you gonna do with your life? "You should be a lawyer, a doctor, an accountant, a consultant, blah, blah, blah. Everywhere you turn people try to tell you who to be and what to do with your life. We call that the noise. Block it. Shed it. Leave it for the conformists. As a generation, we need to get back to focusing on individuality. Self-construction rather than mass production. Define your own road in life instead of traveling down someone else's. Listen to yourself. Your road is the open road. Find it." —Mike and Nathan After college Mike Marriner and Nathan Gebhard had no idea what to do with their lives. All they'd been exposed to were standard career paths like doctor and consultant—roads that didn't fit them at all. To see what else was out there they took a roadtrip across the nation in a huge forty-foot RV to meet with people who had successfully defined their own paths in life—including the chairman of Starbucks; a lobsterman from Maine; the director of Saturday Night Live; the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic; the first female Supreme Court Justice of the United States; head stylist for Madonna; and the CEO of National Geographic Ventures. All told, one hundred and forty people candidly shared their stories about how they got from college to the present. Now in Roadtrip Nation, Mike and Nathan share the most compelling tales with you. Along the way, they explain how you, too, can get out there and meet people on your own. From making cold calls to asking stimulating interview questions, Roadtrip Nation will give you the tools to create a life that you'll look back on and say: "I was true to myself every step of the way."

I just found my copy of this. Not a happy ending, but hey, it happened. I'm uploading it in the name of trying to get complete seasons here on my page. (I also just found the Gator Bowl, I will add that one in next). This is a broadcast, telecast, and production of either ABC and ESPN, the Big Ten Network, Fox Sports, or CBS Sports. We do not claim ownership of any kind therefore we do not profit from it in any way.

"Mona Lisa" is a song written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the Paramount Pictures film Captain Carey, U.S.A. (1950). It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 1950. The arrangement was by Nelson Riddle and the orchestral backing was played by Les Baxter and his Orchestra. The soundtrack version by Nat King Cole spent eight weeks at number one in the Billboard singles chart in 1950. Also, Cole's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1992. The Billboard sales charts of 1950 also showed significant sales on versions by Dennis Day and Harry James. In 1986, it was used as the theme to the British film Mona Lisa. An uncredited version of Mona Lisa plays in the background of one scene in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954). The song was used in the wedding scene of the NBC mini-series, Witness to the Mob, in 1998. Various artists, including Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Art Lund, Shakin' Stevens, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, the Neville Brothers, and Nat King Cole's daughter Natalie Cole, have released cover versions of this song. Bruddah Iz (Israel Kamakawiwo'ole) also covered the song on the album Alone in IZ World. Harry Connick, Jr. included the song on his 2009 album, Your Songs. A rockabilly version of "Mona Lisa" (b/w/ "Foolish One") was released by Carl Mann on Phillips International Records (#3539) in March 1959 and reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Conway Twitty recorded a version of "Mona Lisa" in February 1959, but planned to release it only as an album cut (on an EP and an LP by MGM Records). Nevertheless, it peaked at #5 in the UK Singles Chart in that year.[1] Sam Phillips signed Carl Mann to record his version of the song after the Twitty version began getting radio play in early 1959[4]. This was the most successful single in Mann's career. The melody is slightly different, and the lyrics are also mostly the same as in the original version by Nat King Cole, though a few more phrases are added in that elaborate more on the girl he likes. The singer Don Cherry recorded a version backed by the Victor Young Orchestra which reached number seven in 1952. In 1961, this song was covered by Hong Kong female singer Kong Ling (江玲), on her LP album Off-Beat Cha Cha with the local Diamond Records. (extract from Wikipedia 2011)

From one of the world's leading data scientists, a landmark tour of the new science of idea flow, offering revolutionary insights into the mysteries of collective intelligence and social influence. If the Big Data revolution has a presiding genius, it is MIT's Alex "Sandy" Pentland. Over years of groundbreaking experiments, he has distilled remarkable discoveries significant enough to become the bedrock of a whole new scientific field: social physics. Humans have more in common with bees than we like to admit: We're social creatures first and foremost. Our most important habits of action—and most basic notions of common sense—are wired into us through our coordination in social groups. Social physics is about idea flow, the way human social networks spread ideas and transform those ideas into behaviors. - from Penguin Press. See more at:

The Morning Exercises at Harvard's 363nd Commencement at Tercentenary Theatre on May 29, 2014. For more information on this year's Commencement, visit Welcome to the 363rd Harvard Commencement. Although Harvard's first Commencement in 1642 is more than 372 years behind us, Commencement numbering has fallen out of step as exercises were omitted for reasons ranging from war to plague. The cumulative effect is that 2014, for example, marks only the 363rd Harvard Commencement. Commencement at Harvard is comprised of three components: the ceremonial Morning Exercises, during which University degrees are conferred; the mid-day luncheons and diploma-awarding ceremonies at the undergraduate Houses, Graduate and Professional Schools; and the afternoon Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association, during which Harvard's president and the featured Commencement speaker deliver their addresses. The Morning Exercises, which convene in the outdoor Tercentenary Theatre, are attended by approximately 32,000 degree candidates, family members, faculty, alumni/ae, and guests.
