The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress convened a symposium that brought together respected scholars to explore the intricate encounters of Africans, Europeans and native people during this significant period in America's history. In 1619, a Dutch ship with about 20 Africans on board entered a port at the English colony of Jamestown, Virginia. This event is known as the arrival of the first recorded Africans to English North America. Their historic arrival, however, marked the beginning of a trend in colonial America, in which the people of Africa were taken from their motherland and consigned to lifelong slavery. From 1619 to 1650, during the life span of the first arriving Africans, racial discrimination emerged and chattel slavery would be codified into law. The symposium will ask questions related to the historical importance of these events in 1619. For example, who were the Africans who arrived in Virginia in 1619, where did they come from, what world did they bring with them? What emerged from Africans' engagement with indigenous Native American populations and their spiritual and cultural life ways, and what is the enduring legacy of this encounter today? The event also featured a display of treasures and historical items from the Library of Congress' collections related to the early Americas. The symposium was held in collaboration with the Middle Passage Project of the College of William & Mary, the Virginia Commonwealth's 2019 Commemoration and Norfolk State University. Speaker Biography: Joanne M. Braxton is 2015 David M. Larson Fellow in spirituality and health at the John W. Sandy told Patrick Humphries in one of her final interviews that this was her favourite song on Rendezvous. From album "Rendezvous" Music and Lyrics: Sandy Denny Released: May 1977 (UK) Recorded: 1976 Musicians: Jerry Donahue - electric guitar, Trevor Lucas - acoustic guitar, Pat Donaldson - bass, Steve Winwood - organ, electric piano, Sunny Leslie - backing vocals, Sue Glover - backing vocals, Timi Donald - drums There you may stand in your splendour and jewels Swaying me in both directions. One is the right one, the other for fools, How do I make my selection? The city lies silent in the warm morning light, The sand is as golden as saffron. Oasis of love, sweet water of life, God bless the poor ones who have none though they have tried. Someone is drowning down there in the flood But this river will dry by tomorrow. Is it ocean or stream, this love in my blood, Bringer of joy or of sorrow? The end of the journey must soon be in sight, Birth is the start of the swansong. Oasis of love, sweet water of life, God bless the poor ones who want some but are denied. No one is given the map to their dreams, All we can do is to trace it. See where we go to, Know where we've been, Build up the courage to face it While we fumble in the darkness where once there was light Roaming the land of the ancients. Oasis of love, sweet water of life, God bless the poor ones whose patience never died. While we stumble in blindness where once there was sight Searching for trees in the forest. Oasis of love, sweet water of life, God bless the poor ones, so helpless they have cried. God bless the poor ones who have none though they have tried. God bless the poor ones who want some but are denied. God bless the poor ones whose patience never died. God bless the poor ones on that one way donkey ride. Twenty years after the publication of Paul Gilroy's The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness (1993), scholarship no longer simply posits the relationship between blackness and modernity as an irreconcilable problem. Though Gilroy posited The Black Atlantic as a 'heuristic' work, his ideas engendered debates in history, anthropology, and literary studies as well as political thought and philosophy—areas once perceived as the exclusive domain of an organic and hermetically sealed Western tradition. The Black Atlantic @ Twenty symposium (BA@20) aims to explore how Gilroy's insistence that blackness figures as a constitutive element of modernity has effected a lasting transformation in knowledge production.

''I originally performed two more songs that night but due to some technical difficulties and camera time, I decided to post the best part of my performance, and it was this song''-David Hayward. I had several requests for this great old song and I apologise for the delay in doing it. I first heard this song many years ago played by two wonderful young County Roscommon musicians - the Connolly sisters : Lyla on accordion and Iris on violin. Sadly Lyla passed away in recent years but her gentle spirit is always with us. I dedicate this song to her memory. May she rest among the angels. I include the words for those of you who like to sing along! "Forever and ever my heart will be true Sweetheart for ever, I'll wait for you. We both made a promise that we'd never part. Let's seal it with a kiss forever my sweetheart Let bygones be bygones forever We'll fall in love once again. So let's tell the world of our true love divine Forever and ever you'll be mine."

Kevin Crawford demonstrates a Jerry Freeman tweaked brass D Generation whistle. Someone asked how I create a tweaked Generation whistle: The whistlehead is unglued from the tube by heating with near-boiling water (necessary to make the modifications, and it makes the whistle tuneable), An appropriate thickness of plastic is laminated under the soundblade to bring the soundblade edge to the correct position, The soundblade edge is carved to the correct shape, The cavity under the windway is filled, The windway floor exit edge is changed from being a square edge, to having the appropriate radius, A brass ring is pressed onto the bottom of the socket so it can't crack (the fatal weakness in these injection molded whistleheads), The whistlehead is mounted on the lathe and the brass ring machined to a bright finish, The whistle is tested, and the position of the soundblade and the windway exit radius are adjusted if necessary, for proper play and voicing. I voice these tweaked Generations a little sweeter/purer than the presently manufactured Generations. I try to match the voicing of the pre-1980's vintage Generations, which are superior to what Generation is producing today. Best wishes, Jerry

Slideshow of the Epiphany song "We Three Kings of Orient Are" sung by Jennifer Avalon, accompanied by the lyrics (in English). Both the lyrics and the music were written by John Henry Hopkins, Jr. circa 1857, then an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church, who was instrumental in organizing an elaborate holiday pageant (which featured this song) for the students of the General Theological Seminary in New York City while serving as the seminary's music director. In 1872, Hopkins was ordained an Episcopal priest and later served as rector at Christ Episcopal Church, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The song tells the story of the Magi (found in Matthew 2) traveling to visit to the Christ Child, guided only by the Star of Bethlehem. See the Spanish version at

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, this timely and insightful forum moderated by Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian Director Kevin Gover (Pawnee/Comanche) focuses on topical issues of reconciliation and highlights national apologies made to Native peoples. The symposium covers the eloquent apology issued in June 2008 by the Canadian government for the abuse and cultural loss suffered by Aboriginal peoples in Canada's residential schools. It includes a presentation on the Native American Apology Resolution recently passed in the United States Senate as well as an examination of reconciliation efforts in Guatemala. A wrap-up speaker considers the issues involved in apologies and reconciliation processes in a broad scope. Concluding with panel discussion and questions from the audience, Harvest of Hope seeks a deeper, more inclusive understanding of our national narratives and the experiences of the Native peoples of the Americas. In Part 8, Kevin Gover moderates a panel discussion with the presenters. This symposium took place in the Rasmuson Theater of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC on November 13, 2008.This symposium took place in the Rasmuson Theater of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC on November 13, 2008.
