Owen explains how to traditionally smelt ore from Siderite. Ever since he can remember Owen was playing with forging tools. Once he reached his early twenties, with the support of his parents, Owen decided to get professional training in the ancient craft of bladesmithing. The decision paid off. Now, based in Kent, the 45-year-old specialises in making Saxon pattern welded swords, Viking axes and kitchen knives. Owen, who acts as an unofficial spokesperson for the UK blacksmithing community, is widely regarded as one of the top blacksmiths in the country. This short film covers the creation of a Kitchen Knife by UK Bladesmith Owen Bush. www.owenbush.co.uk .There is slow motion footage of the forging and other processes. The film was made by Gavin Bush (Owen's Brother) and the music was composed and played by Gavin Bush. We wanted to capture some of the aspects of the craft that I find beautiful I hope that comes across. I have named this film "Forging Soul into Steel" as this has been my motto during the past 20 years of my smithing career. Our director and founder Drew spent a week with designer Sebastian Ng Lei at the South East London forge of noted bladesmith, swordsmith and artisan blacksmith Owen Bush. Over the 7 days they built a furnace from scratch, smelted ore into steel, forged blades, shaped and sharpened them and fit handles. He documented the process of crafting a tanto knife from start to finish on the Drift Ghost-S, a camera he also designed. Other mounts used were the Drift Monopod and Drift Timelapse. This is my friend James's first big hit from 1996. It earned him a 1996 Canadian Country Music Assosiation Awards nomination as best Male Singer. It was shot at the home of "Mary Pickford" in Toronto. James' voice is pure maple sugar & the songwriting is first class. He didn't win the statue but was very deserving, none the less!

In 1997 Team Canada '72 were having a reunion for the 25th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series. James Owen Bush, who I had met in 1996 was asked by Ron Ellis on behalf of the team to write and perform a song at their 25th Anniversary Charity game at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto & at their Team Reunion banquet at The Royal York Hotel. James had been nominated for Best New Male Vocalist at the 1996 CCMA Awards the year before. James had a deadline to meet & he gave me a call. We got Ron Ellis involved and he sent us some notes on what had transpired privately within the group of players during their incredible series with the Russians. He gave us some special inside information. When we played the song at the game and at the banquet it was embraced whole-heartedly by all the players & they suggested that it should be used for the DVD set of the series which was under development at the time. That never happened, but it would have been nice. The great arrangement here, is by Mark Armstrong and is enhanced by the wonderful keyboard wizardry of Doug Riley(Dr. Music). Hope you like it. check out - http://www.thesaxguy.com For info on Mark (he now lives & performs in the "St Louis, MIssouri area).

A magical tune sung with ultimate class by a true gentleman. James's voice is as soulful as you can get. We wrote this tune together after being inspired by noticing something that our parents had often said to each other ! Doug & Mark play to serve the song & it still gives me goose-bumps, to-this-day! Video shot in studio in Ottawa, ON. *Trivia - who is that random guitar player? - that's studio engineer Martin Russell called into active video duty...reluctantly I might add.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntDBoaFspXU&index=1&list=PLM4S2hGZDSE5vEV6_wVH4SCBg_Q6lzBRT Episode 2/3 Metal. First broadcast: May 2015. As part of BBC Four Goes Slow, this programme follows the forging of a steel knife. From the slow stoking of the fire to the hammering, welding and etching of the metal, the film is an absorbing portrait of the complex processes behind the making of the knife. Forged in a spectacular industrial space, bladesmith Owen Bush uses a combination of modern and traditional techniques, some of which date to ancient times. The most time-consuming element of the process is the shaping and blending of a sandwich of steels into a blade which, after polishing is placed in a bath of acids, revealing an intricate pattern - a technique used by the Vikings and Saxons. The bold style of the film-making, making use of long, static shots and with no music or commentary, allows the viewer to simply enjoy watching the painstaking and highly skilled craftsmanship.
