Various of official convoy driving away STORYLINE: Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz arrived in India on Tuesday to help push forward a fragile peace process initiated by the nuclear-armed rivals earlier this year. Aziz was received at the New Delhi airport by India's External Affairs Minister, Natwar Singh. He will meet a number of top Indian officials during his two-day visit. On Wednesday, his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to include discussions about Kashmir, the disputed Himalayan region at the root of decades of Indo-Pakistani distrust. The goodwill gained since January as both sides has seen eased visa restrictions, resumed diplomatic contacts, and relaunched air and rail links. It is the first visit by Shaukat Aziz to India. The biggest challenge for the leaders of the neighbours is to "find such a solution for (the) Kashmir issue which is acceptable to Pakistan, India and the Kashmiris," according to Masood Khan, a spokesman for Pakistan's foreign ministry. Aziz is visiting the region as chairman of the seven-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, or SAARC, which includes Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. India's Prime Minister and Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf are likely to meet in the Bangladeshi capital during the SAARC summit in January. On Tuesday, Aziz was scheduled to meet India's main opposition leader Lal Krishna Advani, and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who kicked off the peace process in January. Speaking Monday in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Aziz said his trip to New Delhi was part of Pakistan's commitment to peaceful relations with its neighbours, including India. The decades-old issue of Kashmir, the Himalayan region that is divided between the two sides. Attacks by Pakistan-based Islamic militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, are at the heart of festering tensions between the two sides. In the second volume of his memoir, The Turbulent Years: 1980-96, President Pranab Mukherjee shares an insider’s account of several significant events during the 1980’s and early 1990’s. In this extract, Mukherjee talks about how Rajiv Gandhi wanted to know “how potent” the bullets were after his mother Indira Gandhi was shot by her bodyguards in 1984. He also rejects as “false and spiteful” stories that he aspired to be the Prime Minister after Indira Gandhi’s assassination. Lal Bahadur Shastri entered politics at a young age as a satyagrahi in the Indian independence movement. He was awarded the 'Shastri' bachelor degree by the Kashi Vidya Peeth in Varanasi. The word 'Shastri' remains etched in the minds of the people as part of his name. Shastri became Prime Minister in 1964 after Nehru died while still in office. He successfully led India during the war with Pakistan in 1965. He coined the slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' during this time. Shastri reportedly suffered a heart attack after the signing of the Tashkent Declaration that aimed to restore peaceful relations between India and Pakistan after the 1965 war, and later died in the Uzbek city. He was the first posthumous awardee of the Bharat Ratna, which is India's highest civilian award. Close on the heels of Pakistan Army’s two provocations when it targeted 93rd infantry brigade headquarters in Poonch town and another army camp at Jhallas in Poonch on October 23, the Indian Army on Monday morning pounded Pakistan Army's administrative headquarters across the Line of Control (LoC) in Hajira area of Pak occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Indian army also targeted two to three terror camps. “The Indian Army did it during wee hours on Monday. The target—Pakistan’s administrative headquarters at Hajira across LoC in PoK was pounded with nearly 12 rounds. There were two to three other locations that were also targeted by the Indian army but the Pak army’s administrative headquarters was the main target. The Indian army mainly used 120 mm mortars and artillery ammunition,” said an intelligence source at the LoC. He also informed that Pak army didn’t retaliate at that time. English/Nat Pakistan's Prime Minister - Benazir Bhutto - has accused the Indian government of being behind the kidnapping of five Western hostages in Kashmir - one of whom was beheaded. In an interview - banned from Indian Television - Bhutto also claims the Indian government is using the hostage crisis as a means of further undermining the Kashmiri uprising. Four western hostages still remain captives in the mountains of Kashmir. In this interview - banned from Indian television - Pakistan's Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto explains why she thinks the little-known Al-Faran group committed their kidnapping. SOUNDBITE: (English) I put it to you. Who are these Al-Faran? Who are these Al-Faran? And this kidnapping of the British hostages - has it helped the Kashmiris? Or has it really helped the Indian government in the propaganda against the Kashmiri uprising? People in Pakistan believe that this Al-Faran group is a creation of the Indian intelligence and that this atrocious act of kidnapping British hostages was masterminded by them to discredit the Kashmiri movement and the Al-Faran group - somebody had obviously given them - and we think it was an Indian intelligence - certain numbers. SUPER CAPTION: Benazir Bhutto, Prime Minister of Pakistan Bhutto also said she thought it very unlikely that militants in the midst of the Kashmiri valley - an extremely remote region - would be able to have direct telephone numbers to various embassies and official offices of the Indian government they have contacted so far. SOUNDBITE: (English) "...that this non-known Al-Faran group suddenly emerges, kidnaps British hostages which discredits the Kashmiri movement, plays into the hands of the government and in the meanwhile he has the telephone numbers very conveniently of the British embassy in Islamabad....." SUPERCAPTION: Benazir Bhutto, Prime Minister of Pakistan In the interview Bhutto also denies that Pakistan, which supports Kashmiri militant groups fighting for independence from India, was involved with the Al-Faran group. The remaining hostages - seen here in the most recent photo taken by their captors (August 18) - include an American, two Britons and a German. A fifth hostage, a Norwegian, was killed nearly two weeks ago. Natural Sound Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken time out of his hectic Indian schedule to make a sightseeing visit to the Taj Mahal. Earlier on Wednesday, President Putin in a special address to India's Parliament, said the five-decade long dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, could be resolved only on a bilateral basis, without outside interference. In an apparent reference to Islamic militants, he told the special gathering of Parliament that the people responsible for terrorism in Kashmir were the same as those responsible for the rebellion in Chechnya. He blamed the same terrorists for organizing terrorist attacks from the Philippines to Kosovo, including Kashmir, Afghanistan and Russia's North Caucasus. The Kremlin has recently tried to establish contacts with Pakistan after decades of hostility, stoking fears in India. India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over Kashmir, which both countries claim in its entirety. India and Russia also signed five defence agreements on Wednesday that will bolster India's defence needs. The estimated 3 (b) billion U-S dollar military hardware deal includes the purchase of 310 Russian-made T-90 battle tanks and the licensed production in India of Sukhoi fighter jets. The Indian navy will acquire a refurbished Russian aircraft carrier. The two countries also signed an agreement on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. President Putin is then expected to continue on to Bombay, where he will meet with business leaders and tour India's main atomic research centre on Thursday, before flying back to Moscow. It's the first visit to India by a Russian leader in seven years. Expressing gratitude to the Indian Armed Forces, members of a visiting Bangladeshdelegation Saturday said that the country would not have attained liberation from Pakistan as fast as it did without the Indian forces. India responds to Pakistan envoy Abdul Basit says 'following Simla Agreement there are only 2 "stakeholders" on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir - India and Pakistan. None else'. An approach different to the one laid down in the Simla Agreement and Lahore Declaration does not yield results in India-Pakistan relations. (9 Nov 2010) 1. Wide shot room at Council on Foreign Relations in New York, talk with Pervez Musharraf, former President of Pakistan, in progress 2. Tight shot of crowd 3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pervez Musharraf, former President of Pakistan: "Yes indeed the centre of gravity of terrorism and extremism is Afghanistan and the tribal agencies of Pakistan, there's no doubt in that, but to fight it, if we are to put Pakistan into a corner and then try to address terrorism and extremism, I don't think that is very wise." 4. Tight shot camera cutaway 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pervez Musharraf, former President of Pakistan: "India's role in Afghanistan is to create an anti-Pakistan Afghanistan - that is very clear to me. Their consulates in Kandahar and Jalalabad are actually involved in creating trouble in Pakistan; they have no other role." 6. Tight shot of crowd 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pervez Musharraf, former President of Pakistan: "The fact of the matter is now again, we are almost a defaulted state, or a failed state, yes, and we were the same in 1999. So, as I've said, this is what democracy gives Pakistan. So, therefore, we have to analyze what is happening in Pakistan, I think it is a pure failure of leadership." 8. Mid shot of crowd 9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pervez Musharraf, former president of Pakistan: "I will have to agree that drone attacks do target militants. That may be the positive of it. We do want to target militants. But the negatives are two: one, indiscriminate, therefore collateral, damage. Number two: Pakistan does not want any violation of its sovereignty..." 10. Wide shot of crowd 11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pervez Musharraf, former president of Pakistan: "Which I said there is an even chance of managing, of accomplishing. So I thought when there's an even chance, and when I see darkness in Pakistan and no political party and no leader capable of delivering, so I thought it was better that I go down having tried and failed rather than not having tried at all." 12. Wide shot of crowd STORYLINE: In an address in New York on Tuesday, Pakistan's former president, Pervez Musharraf, criticised India's role in Afghanistan, and also disapproved of his own country's efforts to fight terrorists. "India's role in Afghanistan is to create an anti-Pakistan Afghanistan," the former leader said to a group gathered at The Council on Foreign Relations, a foreign policy thinktank based in Manhattan. Musharraf said India's consulates in Kandahar and Jalalabad are "involved in creating trouble in Pakistan; they have no other role." He called present day Pakistan "almost a defaulted state, or a failed state," saying the country's problems stemmed from "a pure failure of leadership". He also addressed the thorny topic of US drone attacks which stray over the border into Pakistan, sometimes killing Pakistanis, which have caused outrage and anti-US feeling in the country. While Musharraf agreed that they targeted militants, he said there were two negative consequences: collateral damage and violation of Pakistan's sovereignty. Musharraf is currently touring the US in a sort of political comeback, having already held events in Florida and New Jersey. He stepped down as president in 2008 amid protests and under threat of impeachment. He now lives in Britain. The former president formed a new political party this year and is targeting a presidential run in 2013. Musharraf said he felt compelled to throw his hat once more into the political arena because there was "even chance" of getting back into power. "When I see darkness in Pakistan and no political party and no leader capable of delivering, so I thought it was better that I go down having tried and failed rather than not having tried at all."
