India and US share common interest in the Indian Ocean and the two countries can co-operate directly, Dr Peter Dutton, Director of China Maritime Institute, US Naval War College said on Wednesday. Joining a discussion through video conferencing from Washington, he said the two countries have common interests politically and economically and could directly co-operate, unlike the scenario in the South China Sea. He said China’s naval activities in the Indian ocean is increasing and the two countries (India and US) have a lot to co-operate since instability at sea could affect the country’s security. Speaking on the discussion organised by the US Consulate General Chennai on the topic “Convergence of US-India interests in the Pacific especially South China Seas and concept of freedom of navigation and the rule of law, he ruled out China escalating its activities in the South China sea after the Hague Tribunal verdict rejecting Beijing’s claims on the sea. When asked if economic sanctions should be imposed on China in the long run, if it failed to abide the verdict of the five-member panel from the Permanent Court of Arbitration in Hague, he said “This is a possibility in the long run. But, we have to be careful. Though, international law needs protection in all seriousness, I don’t think we should be quick. We have to wait and watch. We have to prepared (to impose sanctions) but reluctant”. “If China is compared to a wounded tiger, we should treat it like a veterinarian not like a cage keeper. We should not make it insecure and aggressive,” Peter Dutton added. Explaining the impact of the verdict, he said the freedom of navigation had been protected and asserted that the verdict of the tribunal is ‘binding and final’ and  parties must abide by it. He also rejected China’s claims of historic right over the South China sea and said UN laws are superior to previous historic claims. Any piece of land amid sea which do not have permanent population or support any economic activity could not be termed as an island, he said. The Hague verdict would have ‘sweeping effects’ around the world and other states should begin to reflect. The ruling is an also opportunity-for the China and Vietnam to negotiate, he said. The Indian team will play almost half of its cricket between 2019 and 2023 against the other three top teams - Australia, South Africa and England - if the new Future Tours Programme (FTP) proposal, which was agreed to in principle by the board's special general meeting (SGM) here on Monday, is ratified by the world body (ICC). The revised FTP has been drafted by Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA). "Out of the total number of matches that India would be playing in the new cycle, 50 percent of the matches would be played against Australia, England and South Africa," BCCI secretary Amitabh Chaudhary said here after the SGM. The FTP has also proposed a reduction in the number of match days in the new cycle - from 390 match days during 2015-2019 to 306 match days. However, a 20 percent increase in the number of international matches to be played home and away has been mooted. This means the Indians would play fewer Test matches and play more T20Is, which would reduce the number of match days. This does not include ICC tournaments. TOI was first to report that the Indian team would be playing a total of 158 games (37 Tests, 67 ODIs and 54 T20s) as opposed to the earlier plan of 127 matches (36 Tests, 73 ODIs, 18 T20s), between 2019-2023. It is understood that the top board office bearers - CK Khanna, Amitabh Choudhary and Anirudh Chaudhary - will form a working group to study the FTP proposals before next year's ICC meeting. Chaudhary said India would be playing 81 matches out of 158 matches at home compared to 51 matches out of 127 in the previous cycle. The board secretary revealed that India would host the Champions Trophy in 2021, apart from the ICC Test and ODI championships, which aren't a part of the new FTP. It is also given to understand that BCCI has kept provision for two India-Pakistan series in the new FTP, but that will only happen if the Indian government gives a go-ahead. India to host Afghanistan's first Test The BCCI general body also promised to stage Afghanistan, the team that earned Test match status with Ireland, for their first ever Test in 2019-2020. "Afghans were scheduled to play their first Test in 2019 versus Australia but considering the historic relationship between India and Afghanistan, we decided to host their first Test," Choudhary added. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had contacted BCCI CEO Rahul Johri in October requesting India to consider playing against them. Atif Mashal, the ACB chairman, tweeted, "@ACBofficials and @BCCI have agreed that Afghanistan will play its first Test against India. The exact date and venue of the match will be shared in a joint press conference in due course. I personally thank BCCI for the decision." Ban on RCA lifted The board revoked the ban on the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) with several riders, CK Khanna said. The state unit has been told it should not have any interaction with former IPL head Lalit Modi. RCA has also been instructed to give an undertaking to BCCI before resuming as one of BCCI's full members, and all state machineries are also told to take back their cases which they had filed against BCCI. Pakistan Can No Longer Fool America, And That's Good News For India For almost two decades, Pakistan has led America to believe that it is an indispensable ally in fighting Taliban in Afghanistan. That’s why Washington threw a great deal of money to Islamabad. Like a $12 billion IMF brokered debt relief package in December 2001, which sparked Pakistan’s fifteen-year bull market. But all that money seems to have been wasted, according to Middle East security expert C. Christine Fair. Pakistan has been assisting the enemy. “By 2005, the Afghan Taliban, with strong support from Pakistan as well as from the Waziristan-based Haqqani Network, had launched an insurgent campaign against U.S. and ISAF missions even while Pakistan was being remunerated handsomely for its role as purported “coalition partner,” says Fair in “Pakistan’s Deadly Grip on Afghanistan,” published in the April 17 issue of Current History. Nonetheless, America continued to “scale up” its support for Pakistan for many more years. “More than fifteen years have passed since the United States launched operations in Afghanistan, ostensibly with the support of Pakistan,” notes Fair. “During this period, the Americans scaled up and then scaled down troop deployments and investments in Afghanistan’s economy, infrastructure, civil society, and armed forces, but never managed to deal with the simple fact that, throughout this war, they have depended on one country that was steadfastly opposed to US and NATO objectives: Pakistan.” Until this week, that is, when the Washington made it clear that will no longer tolerate Pakistan’s games, imposing sanctions on government officials and cutting back aid. Washington is further looking into Pakistan’s primary adversary, India, to advance its policy agenda in Afghanistan and elsewhere in Asia. Like the South China Sea, and the Indian Ocean, where America has been trying to tame China’s ambitions to write its own navigation rules. That’s good news for India that now has America on its side in its efforts to maintain influence in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to contain China in its northern border. Meanwhile, America’s major policy shift in the region couldn’t come at a worse time for Pakistan’s equity markets, which have already been suffering hefty losses from corruption scandals that brought down the Sharif government. Pakistan’s stock market has been on a tear in recent years. The country’s main KSE index has gained close to 400% since 2009, and 40% in 2016 alone. But it has lost close to 20% in the last three months alone. Meanwhile, India’s market has gained close to 6%. Apparently, geopolitics are catching up with emerging market investors. India a leading global power, says new US security policy Describing India as a "leading global power", the US today unveiled its new National Security Strategy (NSS) that said it will "deepen" America's strategic partnership with India and support its leadership role in Indian Ocean security and throughout the broader region.  With an eye on China's One Belt One Road (OBOR) and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the US administration said it will help South Asian countries "maintain their sovereignty" as China increases its influence in the region.  The NSS also seeks Pakistan to take decisive action against terrorists.  "We welcome India's emergence as a leading global power and stronger strategic and defence partner," said the National Security Strategy unveiled by President Donald Trump.  The 68-page document said the US will seek to increase quadrilateral cooperation with Japan, Australia, and India.  "We will expand our defence and security cooperation with India, a Major Defence Partner of the United States, and support India's growing relationships throughout the region," the NSS said, noting that its vision for Indo-Pacific excludes no nation.  India-US defence relationship was mentioned in the context of Indo-Pacific region, whereas it gave a very prominent role to India in South and Central Asia.  "We will deepen our strategic partnership with India and support its leadership role in Indian Ocean security and throughout the broader region," according to the NSS which the White House said sets a positive strategic direction for the US that will restore America's advantages in the world and build upon our country's great strengths.  "The United States will also encourage Pakistan to continue demonstrating that it is a responsible steward of its nuclear assets," it said adding the US will continue to partner with Afghanistan to promote peace and security in the region.  In an apparent reference to the OBOR and CPEC, the NSS said, "We will help South Asian nations maintain their sovereignty as China increases its influence in the region".  The recent Chinese move in Sri Lanka and Maldives is seen as an effort on their part to encroach eat on their sovereignty with similar fears in Pakistan.  India has objected to CPEC as it passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.  The US, it said, continues to face threats from transnational terrorists and militants operating from within Pakistan.  "The prospect for an Indo-Pakistani military conflict that could lead to a nuclear exchange remains a key concern requiring consistent diplomatic attention," NSS said.   "We will insist that Pakistan take decisive action against militant and terrorist groups operating from its soil," it said.  We don't own this content Pak media on India, pakistani media on India, pakistan media on India, Pak Media on Modi, Pakistan media on Modi, pakistani media on Modi, Pak media, pakistan media, pakistani media, latest, India, indian, ocean, army, Surgical Strike, Hafiz Saeed, Kashmir, pakistan, pak, pakistani, Pak on India, pakistan on India, pakistani on India, America, China, India America, India Pakistan, India China, defence, nuclear, RAW, R&AW, Balochistan, Iran, chabahar, Trade, Afghanistan, Modi, Ashraf Ghani, Trump, economy, GDP, growth, American Media, Arab media, Chinese media, foreign media, foreigner reaction, Foreign Media on India, cricket, Virat Kohli, Dhoni, ICC, BCCI, Bollywood

Don't write off Modi's Pakistan policy; he is slowly isolating Islamabad Many have opined that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policy on Pakistan has not been coherent and things suggest that it lacks a direction. But the Modi regime is not perturbed by the criticism and is working silently on a long-term strategy and that is to isolate Pakistan without spending a single bullet. Afghanistan after Iran: India is busy executing its strategy The alacrity with which India wrapped up the Chabahar Port development pact with Iran last month and inaugurated the Salma Dam in Afghanistan on Saturday proves that New Delhi is now exploring new ways to bypass Islamabad in conducting its neighbourhood policy and eventually cornering it.    Even Pakistani defence experts are worried about their country's growing isolation In fact, Pakistan's own defence experts have expressed worry over India's latest strategy. In a recent seminar on 'National Security, Deterrence and Regional Stability in South Asia' organised by an Islamabad-based think tank Strategic Vision Institute, two former Pakistani lieutenant generals who also served as defence sectretaries said the trilateral alliance between India, Afghanistan and Iran on the Chabahar Port is a security challenge to Pakistan for it can land in an "abyss of isolation" as a result. They feared that this could also hurt the time schedule of the Pakistan China Economic Corridor and damage Pakistan's economic prospects and chances of restoration of internal peace. They blamed the country's "dysfunctional foreign office" and the absence of a full-time foreign minister for seeing such a disadvantage. Chabahar can eclipse Gwadar in long run, given India's better records than Pakistan The Pakistani establishment is worried for the opening of the Chabahar Port will nullify the advantage of the Gwadar Port which is operated by the Chinese to handle the maritime trade in South Asia. Given India's better economic and political records and the emergence of Iran in the post-sanctions era, Chabahar has every potential to eclipse the Gwadar Port as the main point of maritime trade in the region. The Chabahar Port will also give India the opportunity to reach out to resource-rich countries of Central and West Asia without taking Pakistan into account. So far, India's limited access to the West because of Pakistan's hostility was a big obstacle. Now, by reaching out to Iran and Afghanistan, India has done itself a great service. India has reduced its geographical and psychological gap with Afghanistan without touching Pakistan The pact on Chabahar Port and the subsequent inauguration of Salma Dam has ensured that India has attached a big importance to its ties with Afghanistan. The closeness between New Delhi and Kabul---both logistical and psychological (Salma Dam) and geographical (Chabahar Port) will make Pakistan irrelevant in the scheme of things. Besides, India's plans to connect Afghanistan through railways built on Iran's soil will cement the trilateral friendship further and contain Pakistan from three sides. With US also turning away, Islamabad is in a big spot of bother With the US also not favouring Pakistan currently and the probable leadership of Washington speaking more against it, Islamabad has every reason to feel more nervous. It's only credible friend at the moment is China but its support is more strategic to counter the growing India-US camaraderie. In effect, Pakistan is treated more like a client state by the Chinese, unlike India, which is seen more as a close partner by the US. Hence, Modi might not be doing as poorly on the Pakistan front as many have believed so far. He tried to engage with the Pakistani leadership in the beginning by reaching out to his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif more than once but the reciprocation from Islamabad hasn't been desirable, thanks to the lack of consensus among the multiple power centres there. The Indian establishment hence has implemented a Plan B to deal with Pakistan for engagements with it have not produced any positive result per se. What we are terming as Modi's incoherent Pakistan policy could just be a transition to a more robust and effective policy. Tiger Zinda Hai Refused NOC for Release in Pakistan The Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer is a sequel to the thriller drama "Ek Tha Tiger", which too hadn't released in the country. Bollywood's much-anticipated movie Tiger Zinda Hai has been refused the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for import by Pakistan's Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage. The Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer is a sequel to the thriller drama Ek Tha Tiger, which too hadn't released in the country. Pakistan's Central Board of Film Censor (CBFC) Chairman Mobasher Hasan told The Express Tribune: "'Tiger Zinda Hai' has been refused the NOC, citing the same reason as the first installment of the franchise. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF), the movie is about two spies -- one Indian and the other Pakistani. It is slated to release in India on December 22. Sulaiman S. Lalani, Executive Director, Geo TV Network, which was geared up to distribute the movie, is disheartened. "Our preferred option was that 'Tiger Zinda Hai' should have been allowed for import, presented to censor board, and if any objectionable material was found against the interests of Pakistan/ Islam, exhibition of the film shouldn't have been allowed then. "In fact, if there was any thing against the national interests of Pakistan in the film, we ourselves wouldn't have sought the exhibition but this could have been done only after preview of the film," Lalani told IANS over phone from Karachi on Wednesday. He said they were verbally advised that Ministry of Information has decided not to issue NOC for import of "Tiger Zinda Hai" with "no reasons assigned". Lalani is expecting a written response from both parties on Thursday. Given Salman's fan following in Pakistan, there was a high interest level in the movie. "Pakistan loves Salman Khan. 'Sultan' was a mega blockbuster and minted approximately $3 million at the box office in Pakistan. His 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' was also loved by fans here," Lalani said. Tiger Zinda Hai director Zafar told IANS in an earlier interview that it's a largely a story about humanity. "The film is a very human story... it is not political at all. The idea is that when there is a fight between right and wrong, what is at stake is humanity. And there's nothing bigger than humanity," he said. Remembering the 1971 war: When India won and Bangladesh got liberated The Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 is heralded as one of the most convincing victories of the annals of the military history. It culminated with the abject surrender of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan (now, Bangladesh), with almost 1,00,000 being taken prisoners of war (PoWs), and eventually leading up to the liberation of Bangladesh on December 16.  India and Bangladesh, since then, celebrate Vijay Diwas, also known as Victory day, every year to mark both the countries' military victory over Pakistan.  As Lt. Gen. PS Mehta puts it, "The Indian Defence Forces celebrate Vijay Diwas on December 16 to remember the day of the 1971 war between India and Pakistan. On December 3, Pakistan attacked 11 of the Indian air fields because of which the war actually started. In response, India did take offensive undertaking in Eastern and Western areas of Pakistan. This Vijay Diwas is celebrated because in just 13 days, Indian forces, which included the Air Force, Para Troopers, Ground Force and Navy, made Dhaka independent."  "After this day, the birth of a new nation took place, which is now known as Bangladesh. This was the first time, in the 21st century, where India showed the whole world that it liberated a new country. Maybe this was the first after second world war that a new country was born out of a war. All the army, all the commands that took part in that war, the veterans, who took part in this war, are also called in to join the celebration," he adds. Gen. Mehta further says the battle also reminds him they made General AA Khan Niyezi and 90,000 'Prisoners of War' surrender in Bangladesh.  "This is believed to be one of the most historic events in the military history. But this occasion will be special this time, as some veterans and serving soldiers from Bangladesh army would also come in the Eastern command in Fort William, Kolkata and grace the occasion with their presence," he adds.  Another veteran and defence and security expert says, "The war was a result of genocide by the Pakistani Army in erstwhile East Pakistan which led to the influx of lakhs of refugees into India and creation of a humanitarian crisis. Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, made many attempts to galvanise international action against Pakistan and support to India to look after the refugees, but it did not come by."  "Pakistan leveraged India's justified support to the freedom fighters of East Pakistan as an excuse to declare war against India. On December 3, 1971, at 5.45 pm, Pakistan launched a pre-emptive airstrike at Indian airfields of Srinagar, Avantipur, Pathankot, Uttarlai, Jodhpur, Ambala and Agra. The first salvo was followed by another one before India launched its response. While the Pakistani pre-emptive strikes could not cause any damage to the Indian aircraft or airfields the Indian Air force, in a short span of time established complete air superiority over East Pakistan while dominating the skies on the western front too by flying an unprecedented 500 plus sorties a day," he adds.  On ground, the Indian forces in East Pakistan relentlessly marched forward despite the enemy strength of about four divisions and established complete supremacy which ultimately led to the Pakistani forces laying down their arms.  The surrender by the Pakistan Army Commander Lt Gen AAK Niazi was accepted by the Army Commander of eastern Command Lt. Gen. JS Arora.  We don't own this content Pak media on India, pakistani media on India, pakistan media on India, Pak Media on Modi, Pakistan media on Modi, pakistani media on Modi, Pak media, pakistan media, pakistani media, latest, India, indian, Kulbhushan Jadhav, army, Surgical Strike, Hafiz Saeed, Kashmir, pakistan, pak, pakistani, Pak on India, pakistan on India, pakistani on India, America, China, India America, India Pakistan, India China, defence, nuclear, RAW, R&AW, Bangladesh, 1971, war, Vijay diwas, Dhaka Fall, freedom, Balochistan, Iran, chabahar, Trade, Afghanistan, Modi, Ashraf Ghani, Trump, economy, GDP, growth, American Media, Arab media, Chinese media, foreign media, foreigner reaction, Foreign Media on India, cricket, Virat Kohli, Dhoni, ICC, BCCI, Bollywood

Rohit Sharma blasts 3rd double century in ODIs, second vs Sri Lanka Rohit Sharma is the only man to smash more than one double hundred in ODIs. He struck his third during the India vs Sri Lanka ODI in Mohali on Wednesday. Rohit Sharma scored a historic third double hundred as India continued to be ruthless against Sri Lanka in the second of the three-match series vs Sri Lanka in Mohali. Rohit was the only man to score more than one double hundred in ODIs. Four other batsmen - Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle and Martin Guptill - have only one each. On November 13, 2014, Rohit had set a world record for the highest individual score in ODIs with a scintillating 264 at the Eden Gardens against Sri Lanka. He had scored his maiden ODI double hundred against Australia the previous year. Rohit, standing in as India captain in Kohli's absence, had a nightmarish time in Dharamsala. He was dismissed for 2 and India were bundled out for 112 before Sri Lanka romped home with seven wickets to spare. However, it was a different story on Wednesday as India fought back in typical style in Mohali on a flat pitch. He was watchful in a 115-run stand with Shikhar Dhawan before opening up when Shreyas Iyer joined him in the middle. Rohit was in fine form in late 2016 before an injury ruled him out of international cricket for seven months. He returned to competitive cricket during the IPL and made 333 runs from 17 matches as Mumbai Indians lifted the trophy for a record third time. Rohit was an automatic choice to partner Shikhar Dhawan in the Champions Trophy and he made an immediate impact with scores of 91, 78, 12 and 123 not out as India stormed to the final. However, he was dismissed for a duck in the title clash against Pakistan. Rested for the bilateral series against West Indies, Rohit returned for the Sri Lanka tour with scores of 54, 124 not out and 104. Against Australia, he carried on from where he left off in Sri Lanka and smashed successive scores of 71, 65 and 125 as India won the series 4-1. Later in the year, Rohit turned his attention on New Zealand and set up India's victory in Kanpur with a scintillating 147. Virat Kohli ties knot with Anushka Sharma in Italy After months of speculations and weeks of making headlines on a daily basis, Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli tied the knot with Bollywood actress and long time girlfriend Anushka Sharmain Milan, Italy. "Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli got married at a private ceremony in Italy, today. The wedding was attended by close family and a few friends as they wished their wedding to be a very private affair," spokesperson of Kohli and Anushka said. The spokesperson further revealed that the couple will be hosting a reception in New Delhi for their relatives on 21st December which will be followed by a reception for industry friends and cricketers in Mumbai on 26th December. The newly-wed couple will travel to South Africa where Virat will start prepping for upcoming series and Anushka will spend New Year's Eve with him and return in first week of January to begin next schedule of a film with Shah Rukh Khan in Mumbai. Rumours started swirling when Kohli pulled out of India's limited-overs matches against Sri Lanka and Sharma also ducked out of her busy acting schedule in December. The celebrity couple and their families have flown out of India for the week-long celebrations. The Indian captain has said he needed to rest because of his "massive workload", ahead of the national side's tour of South Africa in January. Kohli and Sharma, both 29, started dating in 2013 after they met during the filming of a shampoo advert. The high-profile couple made their first public appearance a year later during a football match. Kohli is one of the world's highest-paid athletes and a huge star in cricket-crazy India, and Sharma is one of the top actresses in the multi-billion-dollar Indian film industry. The duo will be the latest in a list of Bollywood-cricket weddings. From former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore to the recent Zaheer Khan-Sagarika Ghatge union, India has a long history of marriages between cricket players and movie stars. Former Pakistan foreign minister rejects conspiracy charges By Modi, BJP Former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri said that there was no closed door meeting held with Mani Shankar Aiyar and there was no discussion on Gujarat After former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh broke his silence on allegations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of Congress-Pak nexus in Gujarat elections, the former foreign minister of Pakistan has come out and rejected all the charges levelled against him. Khurshid Kasuri, for whom the dinner was hosted by suspended Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyer, has said that it was an "open" dinner where the conversation focused on "Indo-Pak" relations and that there was "no mention of Gujarat elections". "There were 18-19 people including former Indian Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor and many politicians like Natwar Singh, former diplomats, bureaucrats, etc. Gujarat was not even mentioned. And why should it be. I also make it a point that when I'm in India I do not talk about internal issues of India and only focus on the peace process. Gujarat was not mentioned. It's out of the question", said Khurshid Kasuri, former foreign minister of Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently at a rally on Sunday had hit out at the Congress saying that the Congress is colluding with Pakistan to impact the assembly elections in Gujarat. The PM also referred to a Facebook post by a former director general of the Pakistani army, Sardar Arshad Rafiq, saying Congress leader Ahmed Patel should be the next chief minister of the state. "Pakistan Army's former DG is interfering in Gujarat's election, on the other hand, Pakistani people are holding a meeting at Mani Shankar Aiyar's house. After that meeting, people of Gujarat, backward communities, poor people and Modi were insulted. Don't you think such events raise doubts?", Modi had said. When asked Khurshid Kasuri told India Today, "There was no closed door meeting with anybody. All meeting was in the presence of all the people and it was an open dinner. All conversations took place in front of everyone. There was no exclusive meeting or conversation. I am grateful to those who attended." Kasuri also said that there is no Pakistani who can influence elections in Gujarat and if he indulged in such activities during his travels to India, it would adversely impact the work he does towards peace between India and Pakistan. "Have not even heard of General Rafiq. Who is this guy. I am unaware of him but if he was somebody of consequence, you would have known him forget about me. Pakistani generals are normally very high profile. I don't know, you don't know, nobody knows. He may very well have been a General but after retirement everybody is a civilian", said the former Pak Foreign Minister. He also ended by saying that his efforts towards peace have been appreciated and supported by leaders from all political parties and trough the NDA and UPA governments. He said, "There was not discussion on Gujarat because this is not on my agenda. I only focus on Indo-Pak peace and when I released my book in India both Congress and BJP leaders had attended." NEW DELHI: The Indian team will play almost half of its cricket between 2019 and 2023 against the other three top teams - Australia, South Africa and England - if the new Future Tours Programme (FTP) proposal, which was agreed to in principle by the board's special general meeting (SGM) here on Monday, is ratified by the world body (ICC).
