Various of official convoy driving away STORYLINE: Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz arrived in India on Tuesday to help push forward a fragile peace process initiated by the nuclear-armed rivals earlier this year. Aziz was received at the New Delhi airport by India's External Affairs Minister, Natwar Singh. He will meet a number of top Indian officials during his two-day visit. On Wednesday, his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to include discussions about Kashmir, the disputed Himalayan region at the root of decades of Indo-Pakistani distrust. The goodwill gained since January as both sides has seen eased visa restrictions, resumed diplomatic contacts, and relaunched air and rail links. It is the first visit by Shaukat Aziz to India. The biggest challenge for the leaders of the neighbours is to "find such a solution for (the) Kashmir issue which is acceptable to Pakistan, India and the Kashmiris," according to Masood Khan, a spokesman for Pakistan's foreign ministry. Aziz is visiting the region as chairman of the seven-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, or SAARC, which includes Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. India's Prime Minister and Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf are likely to meet in the Bangladeshi capital during the SAARC summit in January. On Tuesday, Aziz was scheduled to meet India's main opposition leader Lal Krishna Advani, and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who kicked off the peace process in January. Speaking Monday in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Aziz said his trip to New Delhi was part of Pakistan's commitment to peaceful relations with its neighbours, including India. The decades-old issue of Kashmir, the Himalayan region that is divided between the two sides. Attacks by Pakistan-based Islamic militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, are at the heart of festering tensions between the two sides. Lal Bahadur Shastri entered politics at a young age as a satyagrahi in the Indian independence movement. He was awarded the 'Shastri' bachelor degree by the Kashi Vidya Peeth in Varanasi. The word 'Shastri' remains etched in the minds of the people as part of his name. Shastri became Prime Minister in 1964 after Nehru died while still in office. He successfully led India during the war with Pakistan in 1965. He coined the slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' during this time. Shastri reportedly suffered a heart attack after the signing of the Tashkent Declaration that aimed to restore peaceful relations between India and Pakistan after the 1965 war, and later died in the Uzbek city. He was the first posthumous awardee of the Bharat Ratna, which is India's highest civilian award. I hope that our two countries will become good friends and will solve all their problems, along with the Kashmir issue." 10. Khan leading water buffalo STORYLINE: The peace process between South Asian rivals Pakistan and India should receive a boost this week when the leaders of the nuclear-armed neighbours have their first meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. After half a century of enmity between India and Pakistan, the children at Indian Prime Minister's Manmohan Singh's former junior school are hoping that the meeting goes well. Singh was born and went to school in the small village of Gah, near Chakwal in Punjab province - an area that since partition in 1947 has been a part of Pakistan. The government of Pakistan has said that Gah Junior School is to be renamed 'Manmohan Singh Government Boy's Primary School' in honour of its most famous alumni - a move which Pakistan hopes will be seen as a gesture of goodwill to strengthen the ongoing peace process. The 200 or so boys who attend classes here are proud of the fact that a former student of such a small school is now the leader of a giant nation. Little seems to have changed at the school since Singh's school days in the late 1930s. The headmaster has a copy of the school's register from back then. Listed inside is Singh's name and his date of birth. Although there's no trace of Singh's old home, several of the older residents of the village still remember him from back then. Seventy-one-year old farmer Shah Wali Khan was in the same class as Singh. He remembers Singh as being very intelligent and how he used to help other students in class, especially in mathematics. He hopes he will one day get a chance to meet Singh again. Singh went on to study at Oxford University in England. Both Singh and Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf survived the bloody partition of the Indian subcontinent and trace their roots to what is now for both of them a foreign country: Musharraf was born in the Indian capital, Delhi. I also consider it my duty to uphold human rights and the rule of law." 8. Mid of Indian Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi 9. Zoom in from wide of Gandhi, Singh, Patil and Hasina posing for cameras to mid of Patil and Hasina STORYLINE: Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina was awarded the 2009 Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development on Tuesday at a ceremony in New Delhi. The annual award is given by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust headed by Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi, daughter-in-law of the former Indian Prime minister. Gandhi said Hasina''s struggle for democracy and justice symbolised the values which Indira Gandhi stood for. Hasina is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led Bangladesh''s independence war against Pakistan in 1971. Until then, Bangladesh was the eastern wing of Pakistan. With help from neighbour India, Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation on December 16, 1971, with the surrender of the Pakistani army in Dhaka. Rahman became the country''s first leader after independence. But he and most of his family and close aides were gunned down at his Dhaka residence on August 15, 1975, during a military coup. Hasina and her younger sister, Rehana, survived the coup because they were touring Europe at the time and subsequently stayed in India as political exiles for six years. "Believing as I do, firmly in democracy, justice and peace, as did Mrs. Gandhi, I am determined to achieve them and free my people from the shackles of poverty and my country from the scourge of terrorism," Hasina said in her acceptance speech. On Monday, India and Bangladesh signed agreements to step up cooperation in combating international terrorism, illegal drug trafficking and extraditing criminals. India also offered to help Bangladesh with some of its development projects, including railroad infrastructure, dredging, power grid interconnectivity, investment and trade. India has complained in the past that it was difficult to act against a key insurgent group in northeastern Assam state as many of its leaders operated from bases in neighbouring Bangladesh and Myanmar. New Delhi took up the matter with Hasina''s government in Bangladesh after she returned to power last year and the efforts led to the arrest of the chairman of the United Liberation Front of Asom, or ULFA, along with a top deputy in December. Natural Sound Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken time out of his hectic Indian schedule to make a sightseeing visit to the Taj Mahal. Earlier on Wednesday, President Putin in a special address to India's Parliament, said the five-decade long dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, could be resolved only on a bilateral basis, without outside interference. In an apparent reference to Islamic militants, he told the special gathering of Parliament that the people responsible for terrorism in Kashmir were the same as those responsible for the rebellion in Chechnya. He blamed the same terrorists for organizing terrorist attacks from the Philippines to Kosovo, including Kashmir, Afghanistan and Russia's North Caucasus. The Kremlin has recently tried to establish contacts with Pakistan after decades of hostility, stoking fears in India. India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over Kashmir, which both countries claim in its entirety. India and Russia also signed five defence agreements on Wednesday that will bolster India's defence needs. The estimated 3 (b) billion U-S dollar military hardware deal includes the purchase of 310 Russian-made T-90 battle tanks and the licensed production in India of Sukhoi fighter jets. The Indian navy will acquire a refurbished Russian aircraft carrier. The two countries also signed an agreement on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. President Putin is then expected to continue on to Bombay, where he will meet with business leaders and tour India's main atomic research centre on Thursday, before flying back to Moscow. It's the first visit to India by a Russian leader in seven years. Raking up the Kashmir issue, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday (August 14) said it is the "main source of tension" in Indo-Pak relations and sought its peaceful resolution to explore new ways to bolster bilateral ties. "We want peaceful resolution of Kashmir with our full sincerity so that by removing this main source of tension, Pakistan and India could find new ways for promoting their relations," he said while addressing the Independence Day parade after midnight in Islamabad. Sharif's remarks come close on the heels of a spat between the two countries over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech accusing Pakistan of continuing to engage in a proxy war of terrorism against India. Pakistan and India have been involved in a war of words, with New Delhi saying terrorism was a "core concern" in bilateral ties and its "tool kit" is not restricted in any manner to combat it effectively. Pakistan had dubbed Modi's comments as "baseless rhetoric" and "unfortunate". India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi has chosen a daring former spy with years of experience in dealing with Pakistan as his national security adviser, a move officials say signals a more muscular approach to New Delhi's traditional enemy. The choice of Ajit Doval, alongside former Indian army chief General V.K. Singh as a federal minister for the northeast region, underscores plans to revamp national security that Modi says became weak under the outgoing government. The two top-level appointments, reporting directly to Modi, point to a desire to address what are arguably India's two most pressing external security concerns - Pakistan and China, both of which, like India, have nuclear arms. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/0V-t02RLF64/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com
