A journey from Valmikinagar in Bihar to Paniyahwa in Uttar Pradesh onboard a WDP4D locomotive passing through dense forests. Valmikinagar is situated on the Narkatiaganj - Gorakhpur Broad Gauge railway line and it has a railway station named Valmikinagar Road. The route from Valmiki nagar to Paniyahwa passes through the dense forests of Valmiki Tiger Reserve which means that frequent sights of wild animals like tigers and elephants on the tracks is very common here. If you notice then you can see walls are constructed on both sides of the railway tracks throughout the forest area to prevent animals from crossing the tracks and stay in their jungle limit but still some of them trespass the tracks, following which there has been imposed a speed restriction of 60KMPH from sunrise to sunset and 35 kmph from sunset to sunrise in the jungle. Just see the heavy lush greenery surrounding the train. There are 3 small bridges throughout the jungle. Madanpur Devi Sthaan Temple can also be seen. There was an incident around 10 years back on the 2nd bridge near the temple- about 8-10 pilgrims were ran over by Saptkranti SF express on the middle of the bridge while they were crossing it. After crossing the jungle, the train veers to the left for crossing the mighty Gandak Bridge and arriving at Paniyahwa. There is speed restriction of 20kmph for a short distance in between so we slow down a bit. The bridge is on a higher altitude so the EMD was put in 8th notch to achieve that gradient. An interesting thing to note is that the bridge marks the border of Bihar/East Central Railways and Uttar Pradesh/NE Railways. Also, I was constantly trying to locate the Himalayas from the bridge area but failed because pollution had covered up most of the distant scenes. A little sights of the foothills can be observed if looked closely. Enjoy the jet engine sounds of the EMD WDP4D locomotive and plug in headphones/earphones for best experience! About Valmiki National Park:- Valmiki National Park, Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the India-Nepal border in the West Champaran district of Bihar, India on the bank of river Gandak. It is the only National park in Bihar. The extensive forest area of Valmikinagar was previously owned by the Bettiah Raj and Ramanagar Raj until the early 1950s. Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) is one of the natural virgin recesses in east India, situated in the north west corner of Bihar. The pristine forest and wilderness of VTR is an excellent example of Himalayan Terai landscape. VTR comprises the Valmiki National Park and Valmiki Wildlife Sanctuary. The VTR forest area covers 899.38 square kilometres (347.25 sq mi), which is 17.4% of the total geographical area of the district West Champaran. As of 2013, there were 22 tigers in the Reserve. The name of the district West Champaran derives from two words, Champa and Aranya, meaning forest of Champa trees. Geographically, it is situated between 83°0 50′ and 84°0 10′ E longitude and between 27°0 10′ and 27°0 03′ N latitude. Total forest area comprises about 900 square kilometres (350 sq mi), out of which the Valmiki Wildlife Sanctuary is 880 square kilometres (340 sq mi) and spread of the National Park is about 335 square kilometres (129 sq mi) area. In the north, the protected areas are bordered by Nepal's Chitwan National park while the Indian state Uttar Pradesh bounds the sanctuary from western side. Bihar Government is turning 800 hectares of forest in VTR into Grassland making it India's biggest grassland. The landscape of VTR encompasses foothills ranges of Himalayan Siwaliks with mosaic of the cliffs, ridges, gorges, hills, streams and valleys; dense forests, open woodlands, grasslands, swamps and riverine fringe. Criss-crossing and meandering rivers, streams and rivulets, man-made canals; Swamps and Grasslands. River Gandak forms the western boundary of Valmiki wildlife sanctuary. It enters in India at Valmikinagar, where two rivulets Sonha and Pachnad joins it, forming a holy confluence ‘Triveni’. The river is called ‘Narayani’ in Nepal. Harha – Masan River system originates from the Valmiki Forests and forms Burhi Gandak River down south. River Pandai flows into Bihar (India) from Nepal in the eastern end of the Sanctuary and meets Masan. All these rivers with their precursor and tributaries namely Rohua, Kotrahia, Manor, Bhapsa, Koshil, Singha, Dhonghi, Ganguli, Dhoram are full of youth and verve. The wildlife found in the forest of VTR are the Bengal tiger, Indian rhinoceros, Black bear, Indian leopard, wild dog, wild buffalo, wild boar etc. There are several species of deer and antelopes found in VTR which are barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, Sambar, blue bull. Apart from that the striped hyena, leopard cat, wild cat, fishing cat, languor, monkey, and flying squirrel can also be sighted in VTR. The tiger's population in the Reserve was 10 in 2010, which increased to 22 in 2013.

After the 5 minutes of scheduled halt at Basti (BST) on North Eastern Railways (NER), train no. 12531 Gorakhpur - Lucknow Intercity was all set to depart with Ghaziabad (GZB) WAP5 30014. The train was on mainline so the WAP5 accelerated monstrously with the train and we reached 80 KMPH in no time! Reaching till 100KMPH was late than usual due to some speed restrictions. Further after reaching 100KMPH, the train slowed down a bit because of a temporary speed restriction of 75KMPH ahead. After passing the TSR, the WAP5 again showed its might and accelerated all the way till 110 KMPH. The train crosses Govindnagar and Tinich stations meanwhile. Note:- Please do not judge the acceleration potential of a WAP5 and time taken for 0 to 100 KMPH based on my video. Actual and maximum/minimum figures may vary. My video is only a railfanning based demonstration on how fast a WAP5 can be under mixed mainline conditions. Please dont arise speed/time related arguments. Thank You for Watching...!!!

The time was 17:00 at Kusmhi, when a freight bound to Gorakhpur was stopped at mainline, and another was already present on the freight unloading line. So the down line was left surrounded with freights on both sides. As the signal turned green towards Chhapra, Shaheed express shows up towards the horizon at a devastating pace behind the monster TKD WDP4B 40049. As the train came closer, it brought with it a volcanic dust storm in which the trains and the station disappear! It honked madly and as it crossed the level crossing and approached me, I myself was trapped in the dust storm. The train was at full speed and rocketed past me with a cracking track sound. Meanwhile, 12565 Bihar Sampark Kranti Express also arrives from behind and crosses the Shaheed Express.

15656 SVDK KYQ Express departs Gorakhpur Jn. on time and then accelerates with full might towards Narkatiaganj, skipping Gorakhpur cantt. After GKC, the train speeds through the Air Force area of Gorakhpur and starts curving towards NKE. Some mesmerizing morning scenes of fields and forests and the beauty of single diesel line can be seen in the second half of the video. The roads and paths on the left of tracks are frequently used by me, sometimes for Railfanning purposes and sometimes for other tasks. You can also see the old Metre Gauge alignment and an MG Bridge towards the end of the video.

A visit to a beautiful and serene place in Bihar situated at Indo-Nepal border. Bhikhna Thori railway station (भिखना ठोरी रेलवे स्टेशन) is a small railway station in West Champaran District, Bihar. Its code is BKF. It serves Bhikhna Thori village in India as well as people of Thori, Nepal. The station consists of 2 platforms. The station is the terminal station before the Indo-Nepal border. It is connected with the Gorakhpur - Narkatiaganj - Raxaul rail line at Narkatiaganj. Presently services are suspended on this line as it is undergoing broad gauge conversion but none of the broad gauge work is seen happening as the forest department is also not giving NOC to railways for making broad gauge here because of dense jungles in which Metre Gauge existed. In the video, you can see us first starting from Thori, Nepal and crossing the Thute Khola Bridge and entering India into Bhikhna Thori. Many catch sidings can be seen of olden days and then we come to the railway station. As told by my father, the old station building existed opposite to the current building but was pulverized by earthquakes twice! Then the third time new building was made here. The station and the lines are left abandoned and the platform is used by the villagers as a common path as it is the only cemented road which exists in Bhikhna Thori village. Lots of pebbles and stones are found around the station.

A walk inside one of the oldest incarnation of ALCo locomotives in India - the WDM1. This WDM1 17000 was homed at Kharagpur(KGP) shed of South Eastern Railways and was preserved at National Rail Museum Delhi after it completed its service. This was the first WDM1 locomotive of the 100 locos which were brought in India. The traction motors of this locomotive were already missing, and the interior engine set was also in a very poor state... just resting in peace, never to run again. Also, this was the loco from the first batch of WDM1s so this was single faced, i.e., it had cab only on one side and was non-driveable from long hood as it had a vestibule on the other side to connect with the rest of the train. WDM1s from the later batch in the 1990s had cabs on both sides and i dont think any of them are remaining anywhere in India now. Besides that, the locomotive had sidewalks on both sided besides the main engine assembly inside the shell itself which further converged near the vestibule area. About WDM1:- 1957 Alco models ("World Series" DL500 or 'FA' loco), Co-Co 12-cylinder 4-stroke turbo-supercharged engine; 1800/1950 hp. WDM1 #17000, in dilapidated condition. 100 of these were supplied in all. Initially (1957-1958) 20 were supplied and used for ore/coal freight on SER, but later also used for the first dieselized expresses on ER and SER, e.g., the Howrah-Madras Mail (double-headed by WDM1's before WDM-2's and WDM-4's were introduced). Most of the WDM1 locos had Co-Co wheelsets (thus differing from FA units in other countries), although some are thought to have had A1A-A1A bogies. The remaining units of this class arrived in 1959. In the late 1990s, the remaining units were all in SER, based at Bondamunda and perhaps some at Waltair and relegated to shunting or piloting duties as they were withdrawn / condemned. There used to be some at Gonda and Gorakhpur, a few used for carrying sugarcane traffic. Today all have been withdrawn. One loco (not working) was at Gonda shed sometime before but not seen recently, might be scrapped. The very first WDM1 (#17000) was ear-marked for preservation at the National Rail Museum in February 2001 after more better diesels like the WDM2 took over its reign.

My train 52251 Bahraich to Mailani MG passenger had arrived at a beautiful and serene metre gauge railway station, named Raibojha. Situated on the banks of Sharda River, this is the very next station after Nanpara towards Mailani, lying very close to Nepal. The station is surrounded buy a bunch of leafy trees which create a blissful environment. Sharda River is just a 150-200 metres away in the east from the station, which can be seen in the beginning of the video, far away behind the train. The river runs parallel to the railway line a few kms after Nanpara. While my train was idling at the station, soon i heard a shrill horn of an IZN YDM4, coming from far away round the curve. It was the 52252 Mailani - Bahraich passenger led by the first YDM4 of IZN shed, YDM4 6503! The train takes a curved entry into the station besides the tilted semaphore in the background. People are seen throwing away logs of wood cut from the jungle at the outer itself as they didnt want to invite any trouble at the stn premises for them :P Such scenes are common around this area as this area is full of jungles! Its hard to predict these scenes in future, in the presence of broad gauge.

Aishbagh to Daliganj- the uprooted MG tracks and the demolished Gomti bridge. As Metre Gauge Railway closed at Aishbagh on 15th May 2016 for conversion to broad gauge, Lucknow never again heard the mesmerizing horns of the YDM4s and the rusticity of the glorious metre gauge came to an end. Here, the video was captured on 3rd July from 12542 LTT GKP express. The Metre Gauge tracks at Aishbagh were uprooted and Broad Gauge conversion progress was visible. Tracks all throughout the way from Aishbagh to Daliganj had been uprooted and at also included an end of the Royal and Glorious Gomti MG bridge. The whole scene was very heartbreaking for me, being an MG lover.

The train 15656 SVDK - KYQ Express led by twin BNDM WDG3As makes an arrival 10 minutes before the scheduled time at Narkatiaganj Jn. The heart of West Champaran, Narkatiaganj Jn. was also a hub of metre gauge locos and rolling stock; and also it was a major metre gauge junction with MG lines to Bhikhana Thori and Raxaul lately, earlier serving 2 more metre gauge mainlines to Gorakhpur and Darbhanga respectively. At the present time, the metre gauge lines were all closed and the work of gauge conversion was going on at a very slow pace. Still, there were the MG coaches present in the yard which haunted the once glorious and rustic era. They still reminded me of the old days, when there were direct metre gauge connections from NKE to GKP. I still remember coming here when I was young and seeing the departures bound to Raxaul. I have also seen many shunting operations in that metre gauge yard in the hazy sunlight of the morning. But now... things have changed. A year ago, there used to be a parallel MG line starting from the place the video started. The same line continued to GKP earlier in the MG era. We are greeted by the typical Bihari style vendors and sellers as the train enters the platform!!

Gonda Jn. is a situated on the Gorakhpur - Lucknow line and serves as a Junction for lines from 4 directions- Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Barhni and Bahraich/Mailani. The first diesel shed of North Eastern Railways is also situated here. Gonda Jn. also boasts of the biggest freight yard of North Eastern Railways. Gonda Jn was a big metre gauge terminus and had bulk of metre gauge coaches and wagons. The line towards Barhni, which passed through the marshalling yard, was closed in 2015, and the last remaining MG connection towards Bahraich was closed on 30th June 2016. Gonda Jn. had 3 BG and 4 MG platforms. The metre gauge coverage of Gonda Jn was very vast. There were double the metre gauge lines than broad gauge. I have so many fond memories from this place since my childhood. So I decided to make a video on the metre gauge beauty of this place - a slide show of all the beautiful pics taken by me at Gonda! A special thanks to Dhirendra Maurya for allowing me to use his photographs in my slide show. Without his pictures, this slideshow would have been incomplete. Many photos in the slide show belong to him, so a special thanks to him..! Rest all the photos have been taken by me on different dates, different seasons and different years.. I hope you like the compilation. Please mute the video if you dont like the background music, it was the best suited for this according to me. Photos Credit:- Dhirendra Maurya, Protkarsh Kumar.

Sonpur to Hajipur Jn full train journey of 9 minutes onboard 15028 Maurya Express from Gorakhpur to Ranchi. In between you can also see the Jagjeevan rail bridge on the mighty Gandak River. About Sonpur and Hajipur :- Sonpur (Hindi: सोनपुर) is a town in the Indian state of Bihar, situated on the banks of the River Gandak in Saran district in the Indian state of Bihar. It hosts one of the world's largest Cattle Fair which starts on Kartik Poornima. Nearest Hajipur Vaishali is only 3 km and connecting by road NH-19 or by train Jagjivan bridge for double line railway bridge. Sonpur Sub-division consists of Sonpur, Parsa, Garkha, Dighwara, Dariapur blocks. Sonpur Block has 98 villages. The town is located at 25.7°N 85.1832°E at an altitude of 42 metres (137 ft). The river Gandak must have been the route of the movement of Buddha and his followers from Nepal Tarai to Magadh that is why many of the stupas and similar structures, including Ashoka pillars, are found on the banks of the river. The location of Pathar ki Masjid just opposite the meeting point of the gandak, that is southern bank of the Ganges, shows the Muslim influence of trade and commerce in medieval times. The current township Patna is just the modern version of the makeshift headquarters of military establishments of old Patna city which in turn was later version of Pataliputra, the capital of Maurya Empire. Of the ten railway stations in the world having the longest railway platforms, Sonepur being on the 8th (and 2nd longest at the time of construction) longest platform in the world at 2,415 ft (736 m). It is connected by two rivers, the Ganges and the Gandak. Hariharnath Mandir (Hindi: हरिहर नाथ मंदिर) in Sonpur is also known for the famous temple of shree Hariharnath and the site of the battle of Gaj-Grah and rescue of the former by Hari During Kartik Purnima Ganga Snan or ceremonial bathing in the Ganges is held by Hindus to be unusually efficacious. On the day of full moon (Kartik Purnima) immense crowd assembles and take bath. The Mela commences on that day and lasts for more than a fortnight. The Shiva temple, Kali temple and other temples and historical religious monuments are situated here and social and economical activities are at the highest peak during the Mela period. People come here to pay their oblation to the lords and thus its importance is not within Sonpur of Bihar rather it is of India and world fame. Hajipur is the largest city and headquarters of Vaishali district of Tirhut Division in Indian state of Bihar. Hajipur is 11th leading city and 17th most populous city of the State, making it the second fastest developing city next to Patna. It has a total population of 4.43 lakh as per census 2011. Vaishali district , is ranked 8th on a list of 38 districts in Bihar in terms of growth. The city is known for producing bananas. Patna, the capital of Bihar is only 10 km from Hajipur. The metropolis of Patna comprises PRDA area, includes Hajipur. Mahatma Gandhi Setu, one of the longest bridges in the world, links it to Patna. After Patna, it is the fastest developing city in Bihar, primarily because of its close proximity to Patna (just 10 km). There has been plans to expand Patna to Greater Patna, by absorbing Hajipur and other surrounding towns in it. Hajipur Industrial Area is a developing Business Hub in the northern part of the state. From 1869 to 2002 Hajipur had Nagar Panchayat as the executive unit which later developed into the metropolis in the year 2002 and is administered by a Hajipur Municipal Corporation. The area of Hajipur city spread across 19.64sq. km (7.58 sq mi). The city is divided into 39 wards. In 1979, a museum was established in Hajipur, By the Directorate of Archaeology and museum, Bihar.
