The 1930s was a highpoint for ocean-going liners. Crossing the Atlantic by boat was the only way to reach the US, and competition between the French and British shipyards was never less than fierce, a focus for patriotic pride. The British Queen Mary and French Normandie epitomised the golden age of the ocean liners. They were among the floating Art Deco palaces that competed intensely to win the Blue Riband - a prize for the fastest Atlantic crossing. A Holy Grail for the two countries, this prize was also a great bit of marketing. Originally broadcast in 2003. Content licensed by DRG Distributions. The history of speed and the intense rivalry between different ships, planes, cars and trains in their bid to be the fastest Combining stories of technological advance with tales of individual heroism, Speed Machines captures the spirit of an age when speed was all-important. The 1930s was a highpoint for ocean-going liners. Crossing the Atlantic by boat was the only way to reach the US and competition between the French and British shipyards was never less than fierce, a focus for patriotic pride. The British Queen Mary and French Normandie epitomised the golden age of the ocean liners, floating Art Deco palaces that competed intensely to win the Blue Riband: the prize for the fastest Atlantic crossing; a Holy Grail for the two countries - and a great bit of marketing. Later episodes of Speed Machines tell of the rivalry between Pan Am and Imperial Airways to start the first trans-Atlantic passenger air service; of competing train companies vying to run the fastest service between London and Scotland; of the competition between Bentley and Mercedes to dominate the race track and the rivalry between Malcolm Campbell and Henry Seagrave to take the Land Speed Record in the 1930s. Each episode uses archive footage to evoke the spirit of the era, and includes interviews with those involved in the events. Originally broadcast in 2003. Content licensed by DRG Distributions. When Bill Mason worked for Shell Oil in their film unit he created a series about the history of motor racing from the turn of the 20th Century to the outbreak of World War II. This fourth part covers the mid 1930s up till 1939 when Formula racing was dominated by the German teams of Mercedes Benz and Auto Union. Their racing efforts were underwritten by Adolf Hitler who wanted to demonstrate the superiority of the Master race on the race track. The German cars were dubbed the Silver Arrows because of their sleek designs and silver paint. The Nazi swastika adorned the cars and the drivers became legends. Alfred Neubauer managed the Mercedes team and it was the most professional organization motor racing had ever seen. His drivers included Rudolf Caracciola, Hermann Lang, Manfred von Brauchitsch, and the Englishman Richard Seaman. Auto Union's most famous driver, Bernd Rosemeyer died attempting to break a land speed record held by rival Mercedes and he was replaced by his good friend Tazio Nuvolari. Nuvolari had been the chief driver for Alfa Romeo but competing against the Germans became almost impossible. It was a thrilling time but the dark side of this enterprise has stigmatized ever since. In addition to the Formula racing we see the land speed attempts by John Cobb, George Easton and Sir Malcolm Campbell. The races about Indy with Wilbur Shaw. And England's Richard Seaman racing his Napier before being scooped up by Mercedes. This version was prepared for release in Italy but I've chosen to use the English language sound track. Donald Campbell set the world water speed record on my hometown's lake (Lake Dumbleyung) in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia, 250km's South East of the capital city of Western Australia, Perth. Dumbleyung Lake received world recognition when Donald Campbell broke the world water speed record on it on 31 December 1964, travelling at 444.66 km/h (276.3 mph) in his boat Bluebird K7. A granite memorial to Campbell can be seen at Pussy Cat Hill, a prominent feature and vantage point to view the entire lake area Dumbleyung Lake - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumbleyung_Lake Dumbleyung Lake, also widely known as Lake Dumbleyung, is a salt lake in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Thompson's life in the fast lane provides ample material for the filmmakers. From the drag strips, to desert racing to land speed record challenges, to car building, designing and race promotion Thompson earned his place as a certified automotive icon. He started calling himself the Fastest American on Wheels in 1958 after setting a record of 194 miles per hour. His goal was to break the world record of 394.2 miles per hour set in 1947. He began to build a world land speed record car -- the Challenger 1. Thompson took his new car out to the Bonneville Salt Flats on October 6, 1959 and piloted it to a World Speed Record of 363.48 miles per hour. He also set a world speed record in A/BFS Class that remained unbeaten until1990 when Al Teague broke it at 389.372 miles per hour in his streamliner. In 1960, Thompson returned to the Bonneville Salt Flats with a modified Challenger 1 for another record attempt. Its four 410 cubic-inch engines secured his title when he set a new American record at 330.51 miles per hour. He bested the world speed with a run at 407 miles per hour (which was faster than any man had drive a car before) but crashed before he could make a second run and thus secure the official record. The Challenger 1 had its last record run two year later on July 24, 1962. The poor conditions of the salt flats halted the first attempt because he couldnt get any traction as the car bounced on the salt bed. He found a smoother part of the Flats for another run and turned in a speed of 357 mph. But he announced that the Challengers days on the Salt Flats were over. Source: www.greatcarstv.com S003

In the rush to conquer space and send communication satellites into orbit, the danger posed by the waste products of these missions has been overlooked. With tens of thousands of pieces of junk orbiting Earth at high speeds, all capable of destroying a spacecraft or sending a satellite plummeting to the ground, there is a real possibility of the great space adventure soon being brought to a premature end. An investigation into the nuclear industry and its actions in Africa, the film examines Africa’s power needs and the consequences of using nuclear energy. Africa’s development is being held back by its poor infrastructure and undersize power plants. Countries like Uganda can produce only a quarter of the energy needed, leading to daily power cuts with a disastrous impact on the economy. Companies like French nuclear giant Areva lobby aggressively for more power plants in Africa, but how safe are these new reactors? New nuclear power plants in Africa also mean more uranium mining, contaminating the environment and endangering the local population. First Released in 2013. Content Provided by DCD Rights. In 1920 he bought an Indian Scout motorcycle where he was for many years tinkering to make it faster and faster. In 1938 he made this his first speed record. In the 50s and 60s he has motor racing ten visits that are held each year at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Here he has three times the speed record for the class under 1000 cc. At South Africa's Hakskeen Pan, the Bloodhound Supersonic team will attempt to drive a car at the fastest speed on record. Faster than the speed of sound. The target speed is 800mph. The driver - Andy Green. Any's confidence is understandable. The current record holder, the only person in the world to have broken the sound barrier on land is him. But it's not just the thrill or the glory that is motivating Andy to do it again. Andy's every move will be streamed live to a global audience which is why his record attempt is set to be one of the unforgettable moments of 2017.
