you know when you get a paper cut and you say, why does this hurt so much more than anything else. You know the dreaded moment when you feel that familiar but nevertheless shocking surge of pain on your finger. You were just trying to mail a letter to your Great-Aunt Celia to thank her for the hand knitted mittens she sent you for Christmas, and then it happens. Your fingertip is searing in pain; it feels like a knife just sliced through your top few layers of skin. so why does it hurt so bad? Let’s delve into that on this episode of The Infographics Show, Why Do Paper Cuts Hurt So Bad? The dreadful paper cut is just a fun little thing we humans unintentionally do to ourselves to keep us on our toes. You thought you had good hand-eye coordination? Well, think again. One reason why these annoying little cuts hurt so badly is because they usually happen on our most sensitive areas like the fingertip, lip, or tongue. The fingertip consists of layers of skin that make paper cuts hurt more and bleed less. The outermost layer, which is known as the epidermis, is very thin like a sheet of paper. Under that layer is the dermis. This is where all the nerve endings are. The dermis is a bit thicker, about 5 or 6 millimeters, and a paper can easily cut well into the dermis layer, lighting up all those nerve endings and setting your fingertip on fire, not literally, of course. Another reason a paper cut hurts so much is that even though a piece of paper is flimsy and doesn’t look anything like a blade, the edge of a piece of paper can be razor-sharp. You can’t really see it with your eye, but the edge of a piece of paper resembles something more like a saw with a serrated edge and does a lot of microscopic damage to your fingertip when it cuts it. Have you ever tried to cut through something with a dull knife? The knife pulls and tears rather than easily slicing through it. That’s what paper does to your fingertip when you get a paper cut. Now if you get cut by a piece of mail or a well-worn library book, then there’s also the chance of bacteria being spread into your paper cut, which can lead to infection. You definitely don’t want that to happen, so make sure you always clean your paper cut with soap and water and cover it with a bandage right away to prevent infection and keep it from reopening. Did you know that you have more nerve endings in your fingertips than almost any other part of your body? That’s right, your fingers are jam-packed with neurons. Some of these neurons are called nociceptors. These are sensory receptors to detect potential harm. Nociceptors make it possible for the nerve networks on your fingertips, lips, and tongue to precisely identify feelings of pressure, heat, cold, and injury. Your brain even has a specialized area to receive incoming signals from these parts in high-definition. The heightened sensing ability of your fingers, lips, and tongue makes injuries to these parts of your body all the more painful. Who are the hackers who went from black hat to white hat and now work for the governments? There’s a saying that goes, “if you can’t beat them, join them”, but in the case of today’s show we might change that to “If they’ve beaten you, hire them.” After all, if you’ve breached a company or government’s firewalls, you might just be the right person to stop others penetrating systems where sensitive information is stored. It doesn’t always end with a job and a healthy-looking salary, though, and the vast majority of hackers who were caught end up with a fine, probation, some community service or even a prison sentence. For instance, many who have created and distributed computer viruses have ended-up behind bars. But today we’ll look at the people whose tinkering landed them a great job, in this episode of the Infographics Show, Hackers Who Now Work for The Government. But history actually paints a different picture of Vikings than what modern media has romanticized -- for starters, no Viking ever wore a horned helmet. And instead of a big, muscle-bound warrior hardened by the frozen north, most Vikings were actually malnourished. What other misconceptions about Vikings exist? Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show. Today we're asking, “What was life like for a Viking warrior?” Life in the Viking age was tough -- really, really tough. For starters, Vikings inhabited Scandinavia and spread across northern Russia and Europe, land that was difficult to farm and produced little food. This meant that despite popular fiction, most of a Viking warrior's life was actually spent on the farm instead of chopping people's heads off. This is because if crops weren't planted and harvested, everybody would starve. It turns out that across much of the ancient world raiding and pillaging was more of a luxury. Very few villages could afford for their menfolk to leave for weeks or months on end instead of minding the farms. With most Viking villages numbering at their largest from between 15 to 50 households, Viking communities were tightly knit but maintained pretty low populations. Which simple website is now worth billions of dollars? Could your website be soon worth that much? August 6, 1991 CERN, the first ever web page went live. This website contained information on the World Wide Web project and just what the heck this web thing was all about. That would be the first cog in the internet machine. It’s difficult to image a time period when a business or service didn’t have an internet equivalent. We seem to be in the midst of a web startup resurgence similar to the Dot-com bubble that ran roughly from 1995 to 2002. The web based startup cataloger AngelList cites over 4.5 Million companies in various stages of development looking for everything from employment to procuring seed funding. According to Internet Live Stats there are over 1.5 billion registered websites with about 200 million active sites. That’s a long way to come in 27 years. Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show, today we're going to look at which websites started as simple hobby projects, and turned into a multi billion dollar business. What if you came face to face with the xenomorph from the movies Alien? Could you defeat it? Imagine you are happily cruising along space in your very own mining ship when suddenly you pick up a faint distress signal from far away. Checking your spaceship's digital atlas, you discover that the signal is coming from a colony on a planet called “LV-426”- hmm, where have you heard that name before? Landing on this distant moon you exit your spaceship hoping to rescue some desperate colonists- only to come face to face with the galaxy's most formidable predator. Hello and welcome to another special episode of The Infographics Show- today we're putting you up against the most perfect organism in the universe in, Could you defeat it? You vs a xenomorph. Xenomorphs, or Aliens, are a parasitic species who's real origins are unclear. Some believe that Xenos were genetically engineered by an ancient space-faring civilization known as the Engineers, or Mala'kak. The Mala'kak may have used Xenomorphs to terraform planets by wiping out all large species and then starting fresh with their own genetically engineered creations, or they may simply have been a biological weapon meant to 'disinfect' experiments they think went wrong, or to use against their enemies. Others however believe that Xenomorphs evolved in a dark, distant corner of the galaxy and were discovered by the Engineers and other space-faring civilizations. How did Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán manage to escape the Mexican prison? How long did his men dig the tunnel? Men freeze in place, holding pickaxes and shovels at the ready inside a well-lit tunnel under the Mexican countryside. They can hear the vibrations of a vehicle above them, and wary of making any noise that might give them away, hold their work as the prison patrol passes by overhead. Thirty feet below the prison's main yard, there's little chance of being discovered, but after several months of secret tunneling, they can't take any chances- especially when they are so close to their goal: the prison cell of Mexico's most famous drug kingping: Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Could the US military really be hiding aliens? What are the theories saying? Are there aliens hidden by the army and military in Area 51? According to the National UFO Reporting Center, since 2014 there has been quite a drop in the number of people that have reported seeing alien spacecraft. But prior to the 1940s there is little evidence of people saying they saw unidentified flying objects. Then we got the space race and mind-blowing technologies, and people not only started saying they saw UFOs but some believed they had been abducted by aliens. This was the dawn of a new era of alien conspiracies, with Roswell perhaps being the best known of them all. When video technology became easily accessible, we also saw many films of strange objects in the sky, and perhaps even the most skeptical among us could be swayed towards believing they were watching aliens. Let’s now try to find out what could be hidden from us, in this episode of the Infographics Show, Is the US Military Hiding Aliens? What events were the most important events that ever happened in the history of the earth? The Earth- a giant hunk of rock and water that's home to the only known life in the universe. It's so vast and old that it seems unchanging, yet it has in fact experienced cataclysmic upheavals and routine facelifts over the course of its 4.5 billion year lifespan. Just like a human being, the earth ages, and as it does it goes through major changes. Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show- today we're taking a look at the most important events in the Earth's history. 4.5 billion years ago the Earth and most of the solar system was nothing more than a ring of protoplanetary dust circling the sun. However over time gravity gradually drew individual particles of dust together, creating ever larger clumps. Eventually the clumps grew to the size of boulders, then to the size of mountains, and over many millions of years the Earth was formed. Yet this newborn earth was nothing like what you see today, with little if any water and a surface that was perpetually molten. Over millions more years the outer layer cooled however to form a crust, and planetary impacts of comets and asteroids brought all the water that you see today to the Earth from space. Not long after the Earth's creation it's thought that gravity put it on a collision course with another nascent planet roughly the size of Mars. This planet, named Theia, slammed into the Earth with 100 million times more energy than the impact that wiped out the dinosaurs, and hurled vaporized chunks of both bodies out into space. Gravity eventually bound the ejecta together and created our Moon. This impact gave our planet the tilt it has today, which in turn gives us our four seasons, and helped stabilize its spin- two things which scientists believe were critical for the evolution of advanced life. Solitary confinement requires that an inmate be restricted to one cell and has no contact, or at least very little contact, with other inmates. Kinds of solitary confinement differ all over the world, and no doubt in some countries you still have what might better be called dungeons. In most developed countries these days such segregation units are not as barbaric and prisoners should have some time outside of the cell as well as receive enough nourishment that they won’t be looking forward to the next time an insect gets into their cell. Nonetheless, many critics call it an inhumane, psychological torture that is hardly in line with rehabilitation. Let’s now see how you might deal with it, in this episode of the Infographics Show, How to get through time in solitary confinement. You came face to face with Michael Myers, what do you do now? Do know what you would do if you had to defeat this Halloween monster? Everyone loves Halloween- it's that time of year where people get to dress up in spooky costumes, eat a bunch of candy, and be murdered by a superhuman psychopathic killer. For thirty years Michael Myers has stalked our nightmares, and Halloween is his time to shine. Incessantly driven on a quest to murder his family members, Michael keeps coming back time and time again looking to finish his evil quest. How well do you know your own family's background? Could you be related to Michael Meyers? If so, what would you do if he came after you? Hello and welcome to another special episode of The Infographics Show- today we're pitting you up against the classic Halloween slasher: Michael Myers. Born on October 19th, 1957, Michael Myers was only six years old when he brutally murdered his teenage sister, Judith. Complaining of bizarre, inexplicable nightmares and a voice in his head that told him to do bad things, Michael's dreams were filled with flashbacks to events that happened centuries ago in Medieval Europe. Michael dreamed of a fifteen-year-old boy named Enda. Deformed by a midwife's botched delivery and shunned by his community, Enda had nevertheless fallen in love with a Celtic princess named Deirdre. When her father called for suitors, Enda approached the king and asked for her hand in marriage, only to be rejected and laughed at by all present, to include his own father. These are things that you most likely didn't know about Bermuda Triangle A hotspot for unexplained disappearances and alleged UFOs, the Bermuda Triangle has been teasing our imagination for decades. With mysterious disappearances of airplanes, ships, and people, the Bermuda Triangle has spawned a host of conspiracy theories and just as many books, movies, and even comic books. But how much do you know about the most mysterious corner of our planet? Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show- today we're taking a look at 50 shocking facts about the Bermuda Triangle. 50. The Bermuda Triangle extends from Bermuda to Miami and Puerto Rico, and covers 440,000 square miles of ocean. 49. Due to so many unexplained disappearances, it is also known as the Devil's Triangle. 48. Planes or ships lost in the triangle are often not found- scientists believe that this is because the Gulf Stream runs near the triangle and quickly removes the debris from the search area. 47. It's estimated that 1000 lives have been lost in the last 100 years. 46. Despite the apparent danger from alleged sea monsters, aliens, and the ancient city of Atlantis, it’s still one of the premier vacation destinations in the world. 45. Situated within the Triangle is the US Navy's AUTEC facility, which stands for Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center, located on the Andros island of the Bahamas. The Navy uses the facility to test submarines, sonar, and other weapons- but many believe they have a part to play in the Triangle's disappearances or are investigating the true sources. .... Where does the devil actually come from? What is the origin of Devil (Satan, Lucifer, etc)? You might not be religious, but you’ve likely had to deal with a fair bit of Satan in your life. The pesky devil has shown up on the shoulders of cartoon characters, acting as a counterweight to a good decision that appears as an angel on another shoulder. He’s starred in numerous movies, getting into the minds of innocent girls that had to undergo excruciating exorcisms, and he’s been depicted in artform as living in a fiery underworld where wrongdoers spend eternity wishing they hadn’t stolen that everlasting gobstopper when they were just eight years old. On a more serious note, back in the day if you were accused of being in league with this guy you were likely going to suffer greatly. What most of you don’t know is where Satan comes from, so that’s what we’ll discuss in this episode of the Infographics Show, The origin of Satan. What's the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath? How does a psychopath compare to a sociopath? Do you have an exalted sense of self? Are you a compulsive liar? Would you do just about anything to get you want? If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, you might want to consult a professional who can determine if you are a sociopath or a psychopath. Both sociopaths and psychopaths share three common traits suggested by the questions above – conceitedness, deceitfulness, and manipulation largely unchecked by moral conscience. Some experts think sociopathy and psychopathy are the same and group them together under the diagnostic term antisocial personality disorder or APD, while others argue that there are significant differences between the two mental disorders. We will examine some of these differences in this episode of The Infographics Show, “Sociopath vs. Psychopath.” SUBSCRIBE TO US -► http://bit.ly/TheInfographicsShow -------------------------------------------------------------------------- WEBSITE (SUGGEST A TOPIC): http://theinfographicsshow.com SUPPORT US: Patreon.......► https://www.patreon.com/theinfographicsshow SOCIAL: Twitter........► https://twitter.com/TheInfoShow Subreddit...► http://reddit.com/r/TheInfographicsShow -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources for this episode:

The first 100 The Infographics Show fans to use this link will get 10% off their first domain name at Hover: https://hover.com/infographics According to Internet World Statistics as of June 30, 2018, there were 4.2 billion people around the world using the internet. That’s about 55 percent of the world’s population. The lion’s share of internet users are in Asia – almost half – followed by Europe, Latin America, Africa and North America. Only three years ago there were just over three billion people using the net, so a lot of people have recently gotten themselves connected. Some of us perhaps couldn’t live without it; it’s how some of us make a living, either directly or indirectly, while some people would literally suffer withdrawal symptoms if you took it away from them. Our reliance on the internet cannot be understated, and that reliance is only going to become more natural. But who’s the proprietor of this thing? That’s what we’ll find out today, in this episode of the Infographics Show, Who Owns the Internet? First of all, what is the Internet? Well, it’s not one tangible thing. It’s made up of hundreds of thousands of networks and connecting everything is a great deal of technology. As one writer said on Quora, and we like the analogy, when we talk about the Internet it’s like talking about agriculture. Who owns agriculture? What is agriculture? It’s complicated. But for the internet to work there has to be a lot of infrastructure, and that infrastructure is owned by people, companies, entities. The net is what you might call a giant and mindboggling plexus, which is just an intricate network of many parts that makes up a system. Within this giant plexus are nexuses, which can be important points where many connections meet. Information is carried from these points, which are servers, and that information is carried down what we might call digital arteries, or fiber optic cables. Who really owns the internet? Is it a company or a government? Nobody expected to find these things inside of people, yet they did! Your body is a temple, but sometimes that temple can have ugly invaders. At other times, people choose to put rather strange things inside their personal shrines. Over the years, doctors around the world have pulled out some pretty horrible things from people's bodies, or they discovered things growing inside of people that are the stuff of nightmares. Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show. Today, we're taking a look at the most shocking things ever discovered inside people. Before we start, we have to warn you that this episode is not for the squeamish, and if you're currently eating, you may want to click away and come back when done. Just don't say we didn't warn you. First up, we have the story of a six-year-old British girl from just this year who went to the hospital complaining about abdominal pain and continuous vomiting for three to four days. On physical inspection, her stomach was rigid to the touch, and she was clearly dehydrated. When the doctors sent her off for an X-ray, they were shocked to discover a large, dark mass in her bowels that wound up into her intestines. Rushing her to surgery, the doctors pulled a giant hairball weighing 4 pounds (1.8 kg) and measuring 3 feet (1 meter) long. The hairball had settled in her bowels and caused a blockage, while its tail extended all the way up into her intestines. Doctors would go on to diagnose her with trichotillomania or Rapunzel syndrome, a condition where people pull out their own hair and sometimes eat it. The hair tends to accumulate over years and years until it finally causes a blockage that can turn fatal, as was the case for a 16-year-old British girl who died after her hairball became infected. These people died in super strange ways! In today's educational video, let's explore what happened. It’s certainly a morbid subject to discuss, but we’ve all likely talked to our friends about how we want to go out. No doubt for a lot of people dying quietly in their sleep would seem like a good option, a kind of painless, non-messy exit perhaps involving one last dream. Nobody wants to leave this planet slowly, wasting away in pain, or maybe even losing their minds. And while it might be fast, it’s likely no one would like to go out in an extremely violent way. Then there’s the ironic death, and there are plenty of those. We might recall the man in the U.S. in the 80s who avoided the electric chair after appeal and then accidentally electrocuted himself in his cell and died. With that in mind, welcome to this episode of the Infographics Show, The strangest ways people have died. Do you have an image of what hell is supposed to be like? What are different interpretations of hell? In today's animated educational cartoon, we are looking at what Hell is supposedly like. There are so many different words for hell, purgatory, hades, gehenna, abyss, etc... If you don’t do what mommy tells you, you’ll go to hell. That doesn’t sound like a threat you’d hear these days, but in the past, you might be threatened with hell for many types of transgressions, not all of them that serious. It’s some threat too, as it was basically telling a kid if they didn’t follow certain rules, they were going to spend eternity being tortured. There is a thread about this threat on debate.org asking if saying something like that is abusive, and it seems many people had parents that would say such a thing. Most people said it was a horrible thing to tell a child, while others said it was only motivational for kids. But what exactly is hell anyway? That’s what we’ll find out today in this episode of The Infographics Show, What is hell really supposed to be? If you’ve seen our show on Satan, you’ll know that many religions have (depending on the interpretation) some kind of dark force working within them. You could call this a devil, but the Satan we talked about in that show was something that came from the Old and New Testament. In Islam, you have the fallen angel “Iblīs.” In the Quran, you have something called “Jahannam” (a kind of hell), and there are lots of names for this place, such as “The Abyss,” “The Fire,” and “The Blaze.” Many Muslim scholars of the Quran say there are seven levels of Hell. One student of Islam tells us, “Muslims believe that on the Day of Judgement, people will be held to account.” We are told there are angels in hell, and they are severe and harsh and do not disobey Allah when he commands. The student also said that some people can get out of hell, while others will spend eternity down there. In Dante’s Inferno, the Christian hell has nine levels or circles, but we’ll talk about this story later. The Buddhist religion has a kind of hell, and that is called Naraka. Again, there are different levels or circles, with some of them freezing cold and some of them boiling hot. Some temples in Burma or Thailand will have pictures or models of such a place, which look like they were created by a Sadist. But not all Buddhists believe in this place, and some might say hell is the life you are living with all its impossible charms and your insatiable needs. In Buddhism, it is more folkloric, mythical, and not part of what might be called Buddhist philosophy. Also, Naraka comes from Hinduism. It’s said that this place offers something of a break, as eternity might be replaced with just thousands or millions of years of being tortured and tormented. Again, many Hindus differ in their beliefs about this. WHO ARE THE MOST EVIL KIDS? You’ve probably heard the saying, “Kids can be so cruel,” which is usually in reference to schoolyard bullying. It might also relate to such things as young kids pulling the legs off spiders. Psychologists tell us one of the reasons for such cruelty, especially against animals, is that children have not fully developed their sense of empathy. Sometimes they just don’t understand the gravity of their actions. But then older kids should know better. Psychologists also tell us older kids that tend to be evil might have suffered from abusive relationships. They might also just be little psychopaths in the making, domineering devils with an anti-social attitude, and sometimes it seems there’s no rational explanation why they are they way they are. Today we are going to introduce you to some of the worst children ever, in this episode of the Infographics Show, The Most Evil Kids that Ever Lived. Who do human beings kiss? What makes you want to kiss somebody? What is the scientific explanation behind kissing? We all remember that first kiss. A person who made us feel special, the butterflies in our stomach as we lean forward to touch lips and share a moment of intimacy. This human ritual of touching lips and kissing has been around for generations, and it has different meanings depending on the culture and context. Everything from love, passion, romance, to attraction. But we also share 80 million bacteria when we kiss each other! Wow, that’s quite an exchange for a moment of passion. So what’s it all about? Although the USA has evolved into an overwhelmingly metropolitan nation over the last few decades just over half of the country’s population (according to year 2000 statistics) still live in towns and cities with fewer than 25,000 people. The country is still made up of many small towns, some of which have low dwindling populations. There’s one town in the States where you could double the population just by showing up. It has a pub, a library and one resident, who takes care of the passing trade. There’s another town with a population of just two. And of course there are the many ghost towns scattered across the country with populations of zero. The one single resident of the town with the tiniest population is sticking to her routes. Whatever you need a website for, create yours today with Wix: https://www.wix.com/go/infographics The age in which you are legally considered an adult, known as the age of majority, is most commonly 18 years of age. This is thought to be the legal threshold of adulthood when you are no longer considered a “minor” and are now a part of the majority population. You now assume control over yourself, your actions, and your decisions thus terminating the legal control and responsibilities of your parent or guardian. A pretty sobering thought for many young folks on the brink of adulthood. So, who decided that 18 should be the age of adulthood, anyway? Welcome to this episode of the Infographics Show, How Did 18 Become The Standard For Adulthood? The age of majority is defined as the age at which a person is granted by law the rights and responsibilities of an adult. In the United States, 18 is the most common age of majority. Some states however grant majority after a person passes high school, and still others have it set even higher. Alabama and Nebraska for instance, have the current age of majority at 19 while Mississippi is at 21. Nonetheless, the age of majority does not affect voting age which by law is set at 18 due to the twenty-sixth amendment to the constitution giving 18 year olds the right to vote in federal, state and local elections. Let’s just cover a few bases before we dive right into how 18 became the age of adulthood. There are a couple terms that sound similar to the age of majority, or the legal age of adulthood, that you should know. The first one is the age of consent, which, like the age of majority, varies by state. As you already know, the age of majority means that now you are legally considered an adult. You are granted the rights and responsibilities of adulthood, like opening a bank account, purchasing a car, renting an apartment, buying a lotto ticket, and lots of other fun and legally contracting things. With that right, comes great responsibility. You now also get to be held legally accountable for your actions. That’s a lot of pressure for someone just out of high school, but it’s also a real eye-opener. Welcome to the real world, kid! Whatever you need a website for, create yours today with Wix: https://www.wix.com/go/infographics Why did Japanese and US governments try to keep The Ourang Medan a secret? What actually happened on-board The Ourang Medan? The ocean is a vast, mysterious frontier, and even though thousands of ships navigate its waters every day, from time to time tragedy strikes and leaves behind little more than a mystery- no wreckage, no survivors, just a haunting sense of “what exactly happened?”. But other times tragedy strikes and leaves behind a plethora of evidence, all pointing at sinister and unbelievable conclusions. Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show's Greatest Mysteries- today we're taking a look at the ghost ship Ourang Medan. Ghost ships have been a stable of maritime folklore for centuries, and something we like to pretend we no longer believe in. However, sometimes fate tests that disbelief, pushing back the boundaries of our knowledge and our confidence in science and reason over superstition. The Ourang Medan is one of those tests, a mystery tempting us with an answer we may find too terrifying to accept. Reports vary on the start of the Ourang Medan mystery, with some placing it in June of 1947 and others in February of 1948. Whatever the date, the saga of the Ourang Medan began with an emergency distress call over morse code intercepted by various vessels in the Straits of Malacca, near Sumatra and Malaysia. The message was split into two parts, with undecipherable morse code in between each. The first part read: “All Officers, including the Captain, are dead. Lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead.” Gibberish followed, though given the context of the second message it may have been the fading attempts of a dying man to communicate, as the second message simply read: “I die.” SUBSCRIBE TO US -► http://bit.ly/TheInfographicsShow -------------------------------------------------------------------------- WEBSITE (SUGGEST A TOPIC): http://theinfographicsshow.com SOCIAL: Twitter........► https://twitter.com/TheInfoShow Subreddit...► http://reddit.com/r/TheInfographicsShow -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources for this episode: https://pastebin.com/xfH0Ee1Q
