Moody College of Communication and Department of Radio-Television-Film alumnus Robert Rodriguez visited the University of Texas at Austin campus on May 2, 2012 to host a conversation with students and inspire what he called, "the next generation of innovators." Here is an update to El Rey's status to begin December 2013: http://www.indiewire.com/article/robert-rodriguezs-el-rey-network-will-launch-in-december-with-a-from-dusk-till-dawn-tv-series#. To view Robert speaking to UT RTF students at SXSW in March 2013, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCfsHvOEfjQ. Charles Ramirez-Berg, a university distinguished teaching professor in the RTF program, arranged the event in conjunction with the Center for Mexican-American Studies under the title, "The Future of Latino Images in Film and Media." Rodriguez, founder of Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, said that many of his innovations ushered original trends into the Hollywood mainstream. These included the push and acceptance of independent films in the 1990s, the rise and explosion of digital film around the new millennium, and the profitable return of the 3-D genre in the 2000s. A large portion of Rodriguez's lecture centered on the filmmaker's new cable channel "El Rey," slated to premiere in January 2014 on Comcast, the nation's largest cable provider. When it airs, shows will be spoken in English but tailored to Latino audiences. Rodriguez also said he wants the programming to be so good that the network attracts all audiences, and that "El Rey" is currently accepting pitches. UT's RTF program was named in the top 25 film schools (#12) in the entire world by The Hollywood Reporter in August 2012. Negative or hostile comments will be removed and the user blocked.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, there was a great movement in independent cinema of no-budget filmmaking that was the beginning for some of the most successful and popular filmmakers of the modern day. Let's take a look at five features from that movement and see what lessons we can learn on how to make a great film with as little money as possible. Starting with the Once Upon a Time in Mexico DVD, Robert Rodríguez began creating a series called, "Ten Minute Cooking School" where he revealed his recipe for "Puerco Pilbil" (based on Cochinita pibil, an old dish from Yucatán), the same food Johnny Depp's character, "Agent Sands" ate in the film. The popularity of this series led to the inclusion of another "Cooking School" on the two-disc version of the "Sin City" DVD where Rodríguez teaches the viewer how to make "Sin City Breakfast Tacos," a dish (made for his cast and crew during late-night shoots) utilizing his grandmother's tortilla recipe and different egg mixes for the filling. He had initially planned to release a third "Cooking School" with the October 16 DVD release of "Planet Terror" but then announced on the "Film School" segment of the DVD that he would put it on the upcoming Grindhouse Theatrical DVD set instead. The Cooking School, titled "Texas Barbecue...from the GRAVE!," is a dish based on the "secret barbecue recipe" of "JT Hague," Jeff Fahey's character in the film.[5]

El Mariachi - Official Trailer (1992) Directed by Robert Rodriguez Produced by Robert Rodriguez, Carlos Gallardo Written by Robert Rodriguez Starring: Carlos Gallardo, Consuelo Gómez, Peter Marquardt Music by Eric Guthrie, Chris Knudson, Álvaro Rodriguez, Cecilio Rodriguez, Mark Trujillo Cinematography by Robert Rodriguez Edited by Robert Rodriguez Production company: Los Hooligans Productions Distributed by Columbia Pictures Release date: February 26, 1993 (USA) Running time: 81 minutes Country: United States of America, Mexico Language: Spanish El Mariachi is a 1992 Mexican-American contemporary western action film and the first installment in the saga that came to be known as Robert Rodriguez's Mexico Trilogy. It marked the feature length debut of Rodriguez as writer and director. The Spanish language film was shot with a mainly amateur cast in the northern Mexican bordertown of Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico across from Del Rio, Texas, the home town of leading actor Carlos Gallardo. The US$7,225 production was originally intended for the Mexican home video market, but executives at Columbia Pictures liked the film and bought the American distribution rights. Columbia eventually spent $200,000 to transfer the print to film, to remix the sound, and on other post-production work. It then spent millions more on marketing and distribution. The success of Rodriguez's directorial debut led him to create two further entries, Desperado (1995) and Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003). For the two sequels, Antonio Banderas took over from Carlos Gallardo for the main character El Mariachi, though Gallardo co-produced both films and had a minor role in Desperado. In 2011, El Mariachi was inducted into the Library of Congress to be preserved as part of its National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The film is also recognized by Guinness World Records as the lowest-budgeted film ever to gross $1 million at the box office. A traveling mariachi is mistaken for a murderous criminal and must hide from a gang bent on killing him.

Inspired by Robert Rodriguez's "Mariachi" trilogy, comes a short film that follows the events of "Once Upon a Time in Mexico". The Legendary Mariachi is propositioned by a mysterious woman to kill a man that he has never met, on the promise that he will find something he didn't think was still possible, a second chance at life. ***Correction*** "Switchblade" by Link Wray A WORD FROM CHRIS "The Legend of El" was strictly made for fun. I love the Mariachi films, "Desperado" being my favorite. Like most fan films, I try to find a way to somehow connect them with the existing mythology, so that if my movies were to ever become canon, there would be no continuity hiccups. This film is set in the present and follows the events of the last official installment. The Mariachi is basically an empty man and most likely, still occasionally working as a hired gun. The short is essentially two parts. Part one- the story/legend of El. The storyteller is basically giving his pitch of how he will tell the myth of the Mariachi to others. It was meant to be a little funny and reminiscent of Steve Buscemi's scene in Desperado. Part two is the actual divulging of the plot. The Mariachi is propositioned by Boss Lady who makes him a very interesting offer. This part of the film is where you actually get to see what El is really like, vs his fictional counterpart. We shot this half of the movie twice, because after watching it the first time, we realized there there was not enough EL in El. I'm happy to say, the 2nd time around, I think we got it.

Rodriguez has been making movies since he was a kid. He became obsessed with films at a young age, making his film debut in his early twenties with 'El Mariachi'. To fund this cult classic, which cost only 7000 dollars to make, he sold his body to science and let them use him as a guinea pig. Robert's intention was to make the movie so good that he could sell it on the Spanish video market. But the hispanic filmmaker overdid himself and 'El Mariachi' went to the Sundance Film festival. Fans and critics instantly fell in love with it and that was the start of a big career. For the latest movie news, like us on Facebook /ActionZoneFCCE

Scene from the 1992 film "El Mariachi", directed by Robert Rodriguez. In this scene, Domino (Consuelo Gómez) orders that El Mariachi (Carlos Gallardo) plays a song in his guitar, to prove that he's not a killer pretending to be a mariachi. The song is an interpretation of "Alla en el rancho grande".

In 1992 Robert 'The Wizard' Rodriguez showed us that it doesn't require a big budget to make a good movie. (El Mariachi) Now, 19 years later, he has a great filmography with movies such as Sin City and From Dusk Till Dawn. He is also the creator of the Spy Kids franchise but I only used his R-rated movies in this one. I created this video because Robert is an inspiring filmmaker for all the young filmmakers out there, including myself. I also did this video because I wanted to experiment with edit techniques so I can improve them. Hope you will enjoy it. Please tell me if there are things that I could improve.
