Whether it’s rotten cheese consumed by maggots, or mysterious brownies that make you really sleepy, here are foods you’re not allowed to eat in the US Subscribe to American Eye 6. Mirabelle Plum Don’t get caught acting suspicious around the police if you got a few of these illegal plums stashed on you! These plums you see here are grown only in the Lorraine region of France and people from the US won’t get to taste them unless they travel to western europe. You’re probably thinking, “what’s the big deal”? They’re just plums for crying out loud not an endangered species or anything. It’s somewhat of a mystery why exactly they’re banned but the answer seems to come down to money. In order to protect the financial income of the eastern province in France, most countries have agreed not to sell them. It’s a little bit similar to how we have to have the differences between Champagne and Sparkling water. Whatever the reason exactly might be, you aren’t allowed to eat them, cuz we said so! 5. Unpasteurized Milk Most of the milk we drink and the cheese we eat must go through a process known as pasteurization first before we consume it. The process was introduced by Louis Pasteur in the 1860’s and This kills the bacteria and other microbes which would be harmful for consumption . not only that but this allows for it to be stored on the shelf longer. Although some states allow the sale for raw milk 17 states have banned it. Those who are in favor of non pasteurization claim that the milk loses many of its nutrients once it goes through the process. But those who claim pasteurized milk is the way to go state that too many diseases are spread from just raw milk. In any case, it is probably best not to drink raw milk unless it’s from the mom to the offspring 4. Lazy Cakes This cakes are banned in arkansas and strangely enough, they might actually make you feel lazy. The brownies are laced with melatonin and are known to cause severe drowsiness. Melatonin is often used as an over the counter sleep supplement and typically isn’t found in our food. Rumors went on full effect when people started saying that they put some type of synthetic cannabis substance in there but in any case they will make people sleepy. Maybe people who sell them don’t realize they’re not your average brownie, and you have to kind of read the fine print to find out. 3. Pig’s Blood Cake Who on Earth would eat something that sounds this horrifying? If you guessed the Taiwanese, good job! Pig’s blood cake has been banned in the US due to sanitary reasons and whatever other reason they find is fine by me. No need to guess what the secret ingredient is with this one. It’s basically like a street food delicacy that’s made with soy broth, sticky rice and oh yeah, pigs blood! The rice is then dipped in blood and deep fried. Other ingredients might be used to coat the deep fried pig blood on a stick but once you eat it, you have to live with yourself! Supporters of the treat claim there is no sanitary issues with the preparation process but it’s still banned here! 2. Conch Queen This beautiful shellfish becomes actually pretty tasty once you open it up and eat it. The conch queen is a banned food in the US to import mostly because overfishing threatens its existence. It’s actually more like a giant sea snail which has a very sturdy shell. The caribbean is the main exporter of conch meat to the us and demand for it quite high and the US is responsible for 80 percent of the consumption of this endangered creature. Purple Mangosteen One forbidden fruit that you probably shouldn’t eat or at least be aware of is the purple mangosteen. This is a highly sought after fruit which which a delicacy in thailand must be destroyed completely if it’s found in the US! The problem isn’t that it’s a rare fruit or anything but the goal isr to keep the asian fruit fly out, which is responsible for complete destruction of some crops. The tropical species has already wreaked havoc on the state of Florida and we don’t want this thing in our country! It’s been notorious for attacking over 400 different species of fruits and vegetables.

In an age of mass consumption and instant gratification, the want to satisfy our every gastric desire often leaves us all oblivious to the truth surrounding the foods we eat. You might, in reality, just find yourself chewing on a mouthful of lies. Here are 12 things you eat that are a lie. Subscribe for more! ► ◄ Stay updated ►◄ For copyright queries or general inquiries please get in touch: Credits: American Cheese - The bright orange cheese slices made popular by Kraft Foods, usually found inside the Cinderella of American cooking: the cheese burger; are a staple in the corpus of the U.S culinary delight known as fast food. Margarine - For decades, margarine was marketed as the healthy alternative to the seemingly life-destroying devil... butter. This, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. Margarine can, in fact, be quite harmful to the health of its consumers. Chicken Tikka Masala - Most would consider this popular dish a firm pillar of Indian cuisine, or so it’s made to seem by the restaurant and takeout menus. In reality, though, this pillar doesn’t stand quite as firmly as we may think as the dish has a rather murky history. Chicken Tikka Masala is actually said to originate from Glasgow, Scotland. That’s right, it’s a British dish, for now anyways, so long as Scotland decide to remain a part of Great Britain. Pringles - Potato chips stacked in a tube. Well, kind of. The former parent company of this popular brand claimed that the snack can’t and shouldn’t be considered as potato chips at all. They argued that the potato content of the chips in question reach only a meagre 42%. Naked smoothies - PepsiCo advertise this brand of smoothie as containing no added sugar, helping the drink keep up its façade as a health product. The reality is, however, that these smoothies are no better for your body than the most sugary of drinks. Crispy Seaweed - Certain types of seaweed are used as culinary ingredients in many coastal regions around the globe, but perhaps it’s most commonly thought of in reference to forms of Asian cuisine. Crispy seaweed, in particular, is largely attributed to Chinese cooking. Red Snapper - An Oceana org investigation, conducted in 2013, discovered that there’s a US nationwide problem with fraudulent seafood. The study shows that the popular Red Snapper fish is the most mislabelled and miss-sold fish food product throughout the united states. Oceana reported that Red Snapper are often substituted by 28 entirely different species of fish, and this happens in 93% of purchases. Meaning that there’s a very high probability of the Red Snapper you’re eating being a complete and utter fake! Rocky Mountain Oysters - A dish unbeknownst to many who aren’t accustomed to the moo-ey reaches of good ole ranch life; commonly found in regions of the U.S.A’s Great Plains, in steak houses, and in delicatessen joints around the world. One may be coaxed by the name into thinking that this dish is made up entirely of oysters gathered from the Rocky Mountain territory. Aquafina - Another PepsiCo drink, another PepsiCo fib. The label on this brand of bottled water reads across it: “pure water”. But, according to PepsiCo, the water contained within the confines of the bottle actually comes from a Public water source. Pumpkin Spice - There’s a delightful variety of spices that, when mixed together, makeup the seasonally popular pumpkin spice flavour. The commercial stuff we find laden over seemingly anything and everything throughout autumn and winter -a time abundant of pumpkin spice flavoured products – is, disappointingly, more than likely to fall short of using any real spices. Nuts - Peanuts, walnuts, pecans, and almonds are referred to as nuts only in the culinary sense. In reality, they aren’t nuts at all. Peanuts are in fact Legumes, they are dry edible seeds contained in multiplicity within pods that start to split when they’re ripe, making them closer to peas and beans than to actual nuts. Bananas - The bananas we find on the supermarket shelves and in our homes are the wonderfully edible results of thousands of years of genetic modification, meaning that they aren’t exactlyas natural as we believe them to be.

How to avoid some awkward situations abroad? The US is home to some customs that are very confusing to foreigners. Do you know which habits you should leave in the US before heading out on your travels? Check out this list of things Americans do that confuse the rest of the world. Timestamps: No metric system 1:04 Customizing restaurant orders 2:30 Vacation time 3:15 Can I get a to-go box, please? 4:42 Tipping 5:53 Alcohol laws 6:35 Variety of goods 7:13 Thumbs up 8:15 Being extremely patriotic 9:06 Sales tax 9:59 Music: Summary: - The rest of the world is familiar with meters for measurements, kilograms for weight, liters for volume, and Celsius for temperature. But not the US! Only 3 countries in the world still use the imperial system of measurements: Myanmar, Liberia, and the US. - In America, it’s customary to request substitutions, additions, or changes to a menu order. But some foreign cultures that take great pride in their cuisine might consider it impolite if an American wanted to make substitutions, order a different sauce, or ask for an item to be left out of a dish. - Americans have very little time off compared to the rest of the world. 30% of American workers have 5 to 9 days off annually, 38% have 10 to 14 days, and 16% have 15 to 19 days. 8% have less than 5 days, and a lucky 2% have over 24 days. This means that the vast majority of Americans only have 10 to 14 days of vacation. Since there’s no law in the US to say that vacation time is mandatory, one out of every 4 Americans doesn’t get a single day off work. - A common American custom is to ask for a to-go box for their leftovers. However, if you do this in a foreign country, it might be frowned upon. - In America, given that waiters earn a small wage, it is customary to leave a 15%–20% tip. In Europe and most Asian countries, the service charge for restaurant dining is already included in the bill. Tipping in countries like China and Japan is practically nonexistent. - Most countries in the world have a legal drinking age of 18 or 19 years old. The US, along with countries like Sri Lanka, Samoa, and Kuwait, has a legal drinking age of 21. - Foreigners are amazed by the variety of goods sold in American supermarkets and pharmacies. Foreign supermarkets are mostly designed to offer food and a few home necessities. American superstores like Walmart offer a huge selection of food, furniture, car items, home improvement tools, and clothing. - Americans might think that giving someone the thumbs up is a universally positive sign, meaning “Well done!” or “Everything’s good!” But don’t use this gesture in Australia, Greece, or the Middle East as it's a rude way of telling someone to get lost. You might think that pointing at something is OK, but not in China! That gesture is considered to be very rude. - A lot of foreign countries reserve the use of their national flag for official government buildings. But in the US, you see the flag everywhere. - An aspect that confuses most foreigners visiting the United States is sales tax. They might be confused when they take an item to the register only to find out that it costs more than advertised. In Europe, sales tax is already added to the price displayed on the price tag; in the US, it gets added at the register. top 10 everyday things you'll probably skip from buying after knowing how it's made Subscribe to our channel: For copyright matters please contact us at: We live in an amazing world. You can travel pretty much anywhere you want. You can watch anything you want on TV. You can find information on nearly anything thanks to the internet. Then there’s the food and consumer goods we buy daily. In this day and age, restaurants, stores and supermarkets have combined to offer us an incredible range of products that were only a dream several decades ago. It’s probably a good thing too, considering how much our consumer culture buys. In all seriousness, as we walk through the shopping wonderland most of us don’t even give a second thought to what goes into making the various products we buy. Some of it can be pretty interesting. A lot of it, however, can just get downright disturbing and gross. Ahead there are 10 products many of us buy, use or eat on a daily basis. Unfortunately, there are some rather things that can go into making these products. In fact, some of you may be a bit hesitant to buy them the next time you’re at the store. There’s everyone’s favorite meat treat, the hotdog. From there we’ll discuss foods that use red and yellow food. So, if you like cherry ice cream or Kraft Dinner be ready to second guess your life choices. Even the plain old potato chip can have some nasty stuff hidden in it that may have you skipping the chip aisle. Processed breads and fast food desserts? Sure, we know these aren’t good for you but there’s actually something that goes into them which just doesn’t seem right. You’ll also notice that ground beef and gummy bears share a bit more in common than you’d ever want them to. You can wash that all down with a Red Bull while wearing your Canada Goose jacket. Yup, those also have a backstory that may just have you wondering if you should buy them. We’ll end it all off with castoreum, a product that’s in a lot of stuff you eat but you likely never knew what it was. Dinner’s served! Prepare to be amazed by this list of Discontinued Foods We All Miss. Subscribe for more! ► ◄ Stay updated ► ◄ For copyright queries or general inquiries please get in touch: Credit: Be Amazed at these Discontinued Foods We All Miss! Planter's Cheez Balls - My local store has no shortage of Cheez Balls, Cheez Puffs, and other Cheez-y snacks to turn my fingers and tongue orange. Reese's Elvis Peanut Butter & Banana Creme Cups - While we're on the subject of petitions, there's also one to bring back the very limited edition Reese's Elvis Peanut Butter & Banana Creme Cups. Hubba Bubba Bubble Jug - When I was a kid, I remember the bizarre appeal of the Hubba Bubba Bubble Jug. Yogos - Yogos Bits are another bygone favorite that still has fans on the internet. Clearly Canadian - It's the drink everyone remembers from the nineties—Clearly Canadian. With flavors like Wild Cherry and Orchard Peach, it sold well for a while. Pepsi blue - Pepsi Blue was a soda that, while tasty, suffered from poor marketing and other controversies. Sprite Remix - Oreo O's - An indulgent breakfast treat introduced in 1998, Oreo O's were marketed as being so good that they “caused a milk shortage.” Doritos Black Pepper Jack + Dorito's 3D's - Keebler Magic Middles - Keebler's Magic Middles cookies lived up to their name—the middle was filled with a “magical” pocket of chocolate cream. Tic Tac Cinnamon Spice - Back in the day, everyone wanted the cinnamon-y fresh breath of Tic Tac Cinnamon Spice. But in 2010, the Tic Tac company “de-listed” the line to make way for new flavors, since the cinnamon flavor wasn't showing growth. Cherry Vanilla Coke - Many fans of Cherry Coke or Vanilla Coke, or both, enjoyed the Cherry Vanilla Coke flavor introduced in 2006. Hi-C fruit snacks - Hi-C fans were devastated when the brand's fruit snacks, which featured each flavor in the shape of the fruit it was based on, were discontinued. Butterfinger BB's - Butterfinger BB's became popular after they first appeared in 1992. Crunch Bars - There's another candy bar you might be missing—and not even know it. McDonalds Chicken Selects - Although McDonald's is known for its burgers and fries, the fast food giant has toyed with many different menu offerings over the years. Ben and Jerry's Brownie Batter and Festivus flavors - Ben and Jerry's ice cream currently offers more than 60 flavors of ice cream, and over the years they've retired some that didn't work out. Skittles Gum & Sour Skittles - The only thing better than "tasting the rainbow" of Skittles was getting to chew the rainbow-flavored Skittles gum. Fanta's Zesty Berry - Fanta sells their brightly flavored sodas with an infectious jingle—"Don't you want'a Fanta?" Unfortunately for fans who wanted the Fanta Zesty Berry flavor, the answer is, "We don't want'a give you one." Mars Delight - Mars Delight was a surprisingly well-liked lighter candy bar, designed to be lower in calories for health-conscious consumers.

Top things Americans do that confuse everyone else! These are the confusing and weird customs of americans and things americans do that confuse the rest of the world! #5. “Hollywood Smile”-- Another place that foreigners think Americans are wasting water is at the Dentist’s office. While dental hygiene in other countries may not be as bad as it is stereotyped to be, like in England, they aren’t quite as obsessed with attaining or maintaining the perfect smile in the way that Americans have. Where Americans have been known to spend thousands of dollars on braces and whitening procedures in order to get a pearly white Hollywood grill many foreigners are content with crooked and discolored teeth as long as they aren’t falling out or making them look like Nosferatu. Most foreigners from first world nations care about their teeth, they just haven’t become indoctrinated with the intense beauty standards American society has made a part of its culture in regards to dental perfection. In many countries, having a brighter than normal smile that is unnaturally straight is viewed as superficial to the point of being unattractive or off-putting. #4. “Dining Out”-- Tipping your server and taking home leftover food. Two habits that are so ingrained in the American dining experience that they can be hard to kick, but rest assured if you try doing these outside of the US you are sure to draw confused looks and reveal your Stars and Stripes. In most Asian and European countries a service charge is either already included in your bill or it is not customary to leave a tip. In many places if you do try to tip you can offend your waiter, this is because a tip can be seen as a person having pity on their server or offering some sort of charity. In some countries giving good service is expected whereas in the United States the food industry has become a sort of meritocracy. Foreigners see this as absurd, why should a server be rewarded for something they should be doing in the first place? However, In places where tipping is insulting waitstaff aren’t ridiculously underpaid like they are in the U.S. The other habit that can draw the scoffs of onlookers at a restaurant outside the United States is asking for a ‘doggy bag’ or ‘to-go box’. In many countries, especially European ones the idea of saving a hot meal at a restaurant in order to reheat it and eat it at home is a disgusting prospect. Many dining cultures believe that the food is meant to be eaten exactly how it is prepared by the chef or cook at that moment, not to be consumed after the various sauces and meat juices congeal or have their perfect grilling or baking sullied by your microwave. A lot of the reason that Americans have developed this custom of bringing scraps home with them is due to portion sizes being generally much larger in the States than elsewhere. This may be a result of capitalist consumers becoming obsessed with getting their money’s worth causing restaurants to have slowly battled to stuff people’s gullets.

America has an obesity problem, but there are more 200,000 fast foods restaurants dotted throughout the country. Customers have been moving towards places with healthier menus, and many traditional chains are adding items to address this. I tried eating these "healthy" fast foods for an entire week. I had every meal at McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Burger King, Subway, Dunkin' Donuts or Chick-fil-A. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: TI on Facebook: TI on Instagram: TI on Twitter: -------------------------------------------------- Following is the transcript of the video: Kevin Reilly: Fast food is cheap and convenient. But hidden in between the burgers and tacos are some "healthy" options: salads, grilled chicken, yogurts, oatmeal, power burritos. Doesn't sound too bad, right? I spent a week eating nothing but these "healthy" fast foods and I lost six-and-a-half pounds. But even though I lost about a pound a day, it didn't really go well. I live in New York City, a place with every possible food you could want. Eating healthy here, it's a breeze. But across America, there are more than 200,000 fast food joints, and they're bringing in more than $200 billion a year in sales. And no matter where you go, you're never far from a place like McDonald's or Taco Bell. But in recent years, consumers want better, healthier choices, and the traditional fast food places have been losing customers to those fast casual healthy options. The rules were pretty simple: Eat every major meal at a national fast food chain and stick to the healthy options. McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Dunkin' Donuts, Subway, and Chick-fil-A; nothing but them for a week. Yeah, I lost almost seven pounds, but let's take a close look at the numbers. On a normal day, I'm eating around 2,500 calories. An adult man should be having about 2,400 to 2,600 calories a day. But on this fast food plan, my calories plummeted. Most of these meals came in under 400 calories, and that was one of my first problems. I'd eat and just a couple hours later, I was starving. And I had days when I didn't eat more than 1,000 calories. Now, some of these meals were really good. My favorite was this grilled chicken market salad from Chick-fil-A. It had blueberries, strawberries, apples; it was delicious and it was actually healthy. However, a lot of the other salads from Burger King, McDonald's, and Wendy's were loaded with salt, often more than 50% of what I needed for the entire day, from a salad. In fact, excess salt was a problem the entire week. I thought I had hit the jackpot with Taco Bell's al Fresco menu. They take off all the cheese and mayo-based sauces and replace it with lettuce and pico de gallo. One night I got tacos, another night I got a power cantina burrito, and these were meals with more protein than usual. So, I felt like I was getting enough food. They were good, too good. It was all salt. In fact, just one burrito had almost as much salt as I needed in just one day. The American Heart Association says we should limit our sodium to about 2,300 milligrams a day, but the ideal is closer to 1,500 milligrams a day, especially for a person like me with high blood pressure. But if you look at my sodium intake, it was high every day, yet I was barely getting the calories I needed. If I wanted to keep the sodium down, I was starving. If I wanted to feel full, salt through the roof. You see, that's an issue in the fast food industry. Wendy's even acknowledges on their website that there's going to be a trade-off between salt and flavor. It was weird. I didn't feel healthy at all throughout the week, even though I was eating healthy foods and losing weight. And on the last day, I had this massive headache that was just infuriating. These places, they're supposed to be tasty, cheap, and convenient. But it wasn't cheap. Every healthy option was expensive, but left me hungry. For eight grilled nuggets and this tiny kale salad at Chick-fil-A, $12. For the power Mediterranean salad at Wendy's, it was almost $8, yet I could get a cheeseburger, nuggets, fries, and a soda for only $4. That brings me to another problem. Walk into McDonald's and you get hit with that sweet, sweet french fry smell, and I had to get a salad. Would I recommend this to anyone? Nope, unless you're stuck on the road with no other options. Though there was a bright spot: breakfast at Subway. They have these egg-white-and-cheese sandwiches, which I got covered in spinach and peppers. And let me tell you, it was good. But after all this, I just want a cheeseburger.

Having lived in America and now living in Japan, it's interesting to see how very different these two food environments are. I've seen comments on another one of my videos about low carb saying something like "Oh sure, you can lose weight on low carb, which is why all the rice eating Japanese people are so thin, right?" products you won't purchase when you find out how it's made Subscribe to our channel: For copyright matters please contact us at: We’re back yet again with another video detailing all sorts of products you love and the disgusting things hidden away inside. Many of these products are known to be bad for you, but ignorance is bliss. That is, if you don’t know specifically what’s in it, then it’s not ‘really’ that bad. Other products here are a bit more shocking because they are assumed to be pure and healthy but contain a rather surprising ingredient. Ahead we’ll start you off with an easy one – cigarettes. Yes, you know they are horrible for your health but do you know exactly what sorts of “ingredients” are in them? Then there’s Casu Marzu, a Mediterranean cheese that is illegal in most parts of the world because it contains maggots. Oh, you read that right. Ever noticed all that canned meat on the grocery shelves? Someone’s eating that, otherwise they wouldn’t stock it. We’ll show you what’s inside. When you head out for a burger or fries it’s often fun to order a milkshake. Unfortunately we have a pretty long list of things that are in that shake that may make you think twice. Processed Cheese is a staple of the American diet. Surprisingly it contains a lot less “cheese” than you might think. If you enjoy that natural vibrant pink color of the salmon you’re about to eat, look more closely. If it’s farm-raised that color is not natural. As kids many of us enjoyed a golden and delicious Twinkie. Sure, we know they aren’t good for you but just wait until you see what’s actually in these little snack cakes. Cereal is safe, right? Sure there’s brands with a lot of sugar or food coloring, but disturbingly many popular cereals are also testing positive for high levels of herbicides. Even orange juice isn’t without its issues. Whether Minute Maid or Tropicana, those juices fortified with vitamin D have animal products in them. Finally, we’ll end off with everyone’s favorites: Doritos and Cheetos. These orange snacks are just not good for you and what’s inside may have you questioning your grocery list the next time you head out. Everyday foods, fruit and veggies used to look totally different before we started cultivating them. But did you know they haven’t always looked like they currently do? Here are 10 fruits and veggies that looked very different before we started cultivating them! Subscribe for more! ► ◄ Stay updated ► ◄ For copyright queries or general inquiries please get in touch: Credit: Be Amazed at these 10 fruits & veggies that looked VERY different before we started cultivating them! Corn - The evolution of corn is a great example of how we can significantly change a vegetable over time. Corn actually comes from a Mexican grass called teosinte. Avocado - The millennial's favorite fruit has gone through quite a lot of change, and its all for the better. In the wild, avocados are very small and can easily fit into the center of your palm, growing to about three inches in diameter. Peach - The peach is another example of our ancestors using selective breeding to create a bigger and tastier version of a fruit. Domesticated by the Chinese around 4, 000 B.C., the original peach was very small and resembled a cherry. Eggplant - The wild variation of the eggplant is completely unrecognizable from the modern version we have today. Eggplants used to come in a variety of shapes, but most of them were round . Strawberry - Often times, as shown in this video, humans molded fruits and vegetables to make them taste better. Tomato - We have been shaping the tomato to our own taste for thousands of years. The evolution of the tomatoes happened in two stages. Carrot - Wild carrots look nothing like the orange carrots we know today. They were found in Persia around the 10th century and were either white or purple. Cucumber - You probably wouldn’t guess that the wild cucumber is actually related to the modern version of the cucumber we have nowadays. Banana - The wild banana is quite different from the yellow snack that we have today. Originally, they were stocky and hard, filled with large and tough seeds that were spread across the fruit’s interior. Watermelon - Watermelons have actually been around for millennia and they're one of the fruits that have most drastically changed in appearance over the years.

GMO: 10 Foods you didn't know were Genetically Modified Organisms! Now, you most likely keep an eye on sugar contents and other unhealthy ingredients that you need to eat in moderation, but how many of you watch out for genetically modified foods? Most probably not many of you! For most this won’t be an issue, but if you live in the U.S., there’s a good chance that at least some of your food has been genetically modified. Stay tuned to number 1 to find out which item you thought would be completely natural…is actually genetically modified! Find out which Monsanto-like biotechs the FDA has approved, and what isn't really organic! This list brought to you by Zero2Hero! Don't forget to subscribe here! Find out the Top 10 Most Famous Viral Challenges! Number 10: Canola. Developed through conventional plant breeding, Canola was developed by breeding rapeseed, which has been in use for millennia, and was even used as fuel by many ancient civilizations. The first Genetically Modified version was originally bred by University of Manitoba, Canada by Keith Downey and Baldur R. Stefansson during the 1970s. That strain was called Roundup Ready canola, developed to have a tolerance to glyphosate. This was done by introducing two genes, the first called Agrobacterium, which is a common soil bacterium, with a gene from Ochrobactiurm antroi strain LBAA… which honestly won’t mean much to most of us. Surprisingly, a whopping 90% of the U.S canola crop is genetically modified. Number 9: Potatoes. Nearly all of us will be familiar with the hardy potato that has been a stable part of diets for thousands of years, but did you know some strains have been genetically modified? The potato was first domesticated in modern-day southern Peru in between 8000 and 5000BCE. It was first introduced to Europe following the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire and since then it has been introduced to all corners of the world. An estimated 382 tons of potatoes were produced in 2014 with the People’s Republic of China producing the most at 95.5 million tons. In recent years genetic researchers have produced several genetically modified varieties of potatoes. The New Leaf potato was genetically modified to resist attacks from the Colorado potato beetle, but was unsuccessful in making a dent in the market so sales were discontinued in 2001. In more recent years, the USDA approved a modified potato, the Innate potato, which contains genetic modifications that reduced or prevented bruising. Although these have gone into circulation, the Food and Water Watch petitioned McDonald’s, a major consumer of potatoes, to not use the new strain of potato. Thankfully, McDonald’s agreed. So if you eat McDonald’s fries, at least you don’t need to worry about consuming this particular GM food! Number 8: Eggplant. Eggplant, also known as aubergine, has been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory. Strangely, the plant has also played a role in Italian and Egyptian folklore. In the 13th century Italy and 19th century Egypt, the plant was liked to cause or increased levels of insanity amongst the populace. The genetically modified version of the eggplant is also known as Bt Brinjal, and was created by inserting crystal protein gene taken from bacterium Becillus thuringiensis to make it resistant to pests. It works by enabling the plant to produce a toxin that kills the worms that devastate crops. This strain of the eggplant is only cultivated in Bangladesh, but as it is only a recent phenomenon it is too early to judge its success. Number 7: Papaya Papaya is native to Mexico and northern South America, but has since been introduced to Florida, California, Hawaii and other tropical and subtropical regions like India. It turns out that only the female plants are used for cultivation, though, as the male plants provide poorer quality fruit. In 2014 India produce 44% of the world’s total estimated at 12.7 million tons – which is a lot of papaya. But it hasn’t been an easy ride for the plant. Papaya production was hit with a deadly virus that nearly wiped out the entire world crop. The virus, known as papaya ringspot, first hit the crop in Hawaii in the 1940s and within 50 years the virus had spread to nearly every area that grew the crop. Regardless of whether you agree with the GM food industry, if it wasn’t for the Hawaiian born scientist, Dennis Gonsalves, we wouldn’t be able to feast on the delicious fruit today. His creation, known as the Rainbow papaya, was designed to be resistant to the virus, and has ensured a stable and sustainable income for the people of Hawaii and other places it’s grown. It clear that the genetically modified papaya has helped ensure its continued availability today. So…maybe not all GM foods are bad.

Top 10 Plants That Can Kill You | Interesting Facts ► Subscribe: For copyright matters please contact us at: ################################ ► Website: ► Facebook: ► Twitter: ► Google +: ################################ When people think about plants, they often think of the common trees, flowers, and bushes they see every day. Most don't realize the world has tons of crazy foliage growing all over the place, some of which have the ability to kill any living thing that gets too close. Who needs Triffids when we already have some otherworldly plants here on Earth? Hello and today we're talking about Terrifying plants that want to kill you Venus flytrap When exploring the world of creepy plants, people usually first think of the Venus flytrap, and with good reason. Native to North and South Carolina, these bizarre-looking carnivores like to sit and wait for their prey to land or crawl onto their leaves, which are actually toothy, gaping maws. Once the victim is in place, the flytraps clamp their mouths down and begin digesting their feast with enzymes strong enough to dissolve human flesh, according to carnivorous-plant enthusiast Barry Rice. Nepenthes attenboroughii Discovered in 2000, the Nepenthes attenboroughii, or Attenborough's pitcher plant, is a bit more ravenous than other carnivorous plants. While most meat-eating plants resign themselves to insects and arachnids, the pitcher plant craves mice and shrews, according to the BBC. Being a pitcher, the plant collects water during rains. Dendrocnide excelsa Dendrocnide excelsa, or the giant stinging bush, looks like any other plant, and that's where its otherworldliness comes from. It's learned how to camouflage itself so it doesn't stand out. Therein lies its treachery. This innocent-looking Australian plant actually possesses an incredibly painful, poisonous sting, which has been known to kill dogs and horses. Doll's eye The actaea pachypoda, or doll's-eyes, looks like a demon out of some Japanese horror movie, despite the fact it's an all-American plant. While a white flower bearing a single black berry looks and sounds innocent enough, having ten or more of them staring at you from their, on average, two-foot-tall blood-red stalk is enough to give anyone the heebie jeebies. When you add the fact that the plant is poisonous is enough to kill a human, it magnifies the plant's demonic nature. Drosera capensis The drosera capensis, or Cape sundew, is what you get when you cross an octopus with a plant and put its stomach on the outside. Strychnos nux-vomica It should come as no surprise that the strychnine tree is poisonous. However, most may be surprised to learn just how toxic the strychnos nux-vomica is. It actually contains two poisons. Christmas Rose According to legend, the Helleborus niger—or Christmas rose—came into being a very long time ago, after a little girl cried because she had no gift to give during the Nativity.

Japanese Kobe beef is considered the tastiest beef money can buy: a single steak can cost as much as $600. But an INSIDE EDITION investigation found that while some menus advertise Kobe beef, they are actually serving up meat of lesser value. Kobe beef, which has a marbled appearance, comes from pure-bred cattle raised on a special diet in Japan. The meat can cost $55 dollars an ounce, and only 400 pounds get shipped to in the U.S. each month, according to Kobe beef distributor Brent Nakama.
