Intimate but earth-shattering loss. Alternating between slow, delicate harp-like piano passages that communicate the exquisite pain of losing something close to you, like a lover, parent or testicle, and contrasting against sections of swelling orchestral strings, large percussive batteries and atmospheric synth pads that make the loss feel more epic and global in scale. A simple, climbing melody offers a hint of hopefulness, or for those "glass-half-empty" types, a tougher, more martial-sounding drum break @2:12 suggests higher hurdles to overcome. Good for the pain of losing a spouse (or the pain of still having one), memorials, funerals and ecological disasters.

Have a serious, important and intensely personal decision to make? Like a complex relationship, pulling the plug on a loved one (who might not even be attached to a respirator) or an uncomfortable 64th-term abortion? This slower, waltz-like intricate bed of movement starts as a modern classical stately and dignified canon, with repeating processed cello ostinatos/melody and synth bass/pads that suggest sadness and emotional weight. Acoustic drums and piano enter @:56 giving the cut an Alt/Indie or Post-Rock feel, with a simple distorted baritone sax @2:21, adding to the sense of gravity and loss. Good for PSAs, sad memories, intellectual conflicts and slowly walking off into the sunset.

Powerful, attitude-laden paean to overconfidence, dominance and just broadcasting a general sense of "don't-screw-with-me." Various mixouts of the Blues/Gospel spiritual-oriented original with drums, piano, horns, synths and stomp/clapping, with both vocal and non-vocal sections. Great for dramatic sports rivalries, foreshadowing a change or just suggesting an unstoppable army of angry Gospel musicians is coming to kick your ass.

Need to suggest toughness and attitude without making your music provider work too hard? Bare bones, unyielding and a rotten conversationalist, this mid-tempo Rock track is built around a persistent stamping/thumping drum beat, a distorted bass lead and tuned/sampled crowd sounds that give the impression of a riot or the least organized choir ever. Filled with breaks and dramatic pauses, this cut is good for sports, urban grit, making an entrance or being rapped over by the famous obstetric trio "Run D&C".

Futuristic, important-sounding, foreboding, and slightly full of itself, as it's rebuffed many of my amorous advances. Two linear builds (at top and @:48) that start small, sterile and mathematical then grow into large, tonally-climbing, proud orchestral remix-like celebrations of triumph over adversity. Starting with percolating synths, low piano and a woman's vocal pad, this cut gets bigger and more propulsive with rhythmic waves of strings, low brass and drums, all growing more intense. A mix of artificial/informational and organic drama that's good for image spots and overcoming the odds.

Trying to unsuccessfully build something? World's worst burglar? 1920s Harlem Jazz + French cabaret + quirky indie film soundtracks + The Faces of Meth = this silly/happy, upbeat ditty. Pizzicato electric and acoustic guitars suggest awkward sneaking/fumbling as goofy/deranged mouth trumpets create a catchy melody while mandolin, glockenspiel, accordion, nylon guitar, toy piano and hand claps create a pulsing, hypnotic, lighthearted comic feel suggesting cartoon-like ineptitude. Warning: THIS SONG WILL STAY IN YOUR HEAD FOREVER.

After a series of short percussive/distorted electric guitar episodes against processed brass swells/sound design, the cut explodes into pounding, straightforward acoustic drum/string/brass/electric guitar-driven orchestral brashness @:14, with the percussive episodes continuing throughout. The second half builds more gradually into the orchestral section, getting fullest @:47, but stays slightly smaller, having removed the brass and adding reversed piano - overall, more background-friendly than the first half's orchestral section. Good for communicating a sense of purpose and determination. (Also: BG)

[INTENSE BATTLE MUSIC] Great for combat of any kind: wartime, political or sports (e.g. it’s perfect for football). Towering brass and heavy snares instantly say clash of two mighty forces. Changes @:52 to faster feel – same tempo though – but with superfast trumpet figure ratcheting up the drama quotient considerably. Has suspensefully held note @1:25, before finishing itself off with a self-contained ending filled with brass and snares. Sounds like John Williams, James Horner, Howard Shore or James Newton Howard.

Longer version of the nylon guitar-driven original, straddling the line between sadness and hopefulness. Great for a road trip of the world's lesser-attractive neighborhoods of moderate income, the sad realization that not every city has a Starbucks and that Brian's withdrawal from caffeine is giving him mild headaches.

Badass entrance music. Sultry, slow, seductive Blues/Soul-tinged, Brass-driven retro-modern Rock/Funk suggests steamy city streets, attitudinal strutting and my own failures to meet women, including never realizing that my local bar ("The Crowded Closet") was, in fact, a gay bar. Electric bass, electric piano, drums, spring-reverbed electric guitar and a R&B Brass section that practically drips coolness and attitude. Various sections, like the introspective-feeling solo piano break @2:06, provide alternate bravado-laden mixes, all starting small and getting more intolerably self-assured and confident, giving me the courage to try again at "Members Only," another bar in my neighborhood. Sounds fancy!

Gets slowly more aggressive and tense/suspenseful after adding electric guitar @1:19 and flailing, busy Rock drums @2:10. Not ridiculous enough? Okay, try a Pop synth lead @2:47.

Epic, epically-orchestral epicosity. (OK, can we all please stop using the word epic now?). A giant-sounding orchestral theme places meaty brass chords over swirling, urgent strings, with a huge choir soaring above it all. The CGI army stretches as far as the eye can see, and it's about to charge. If The End of the World meets the Beginning of Time and The Final Showdown for dinner, this is playing during the dessert course. Is great for imparting a cinematic sense of scope and features one of the hugest endings of all-time starting around 1:03.

Need to show fast progress or something getting more complex and threatening? Rattling metals, ticking sound design and processed strings creating a tense bed of movement that brings in more and more pounding percussion and vocal pads create an uptempo, linear build to :29. A sudden attack of chamber string-fueled dignity @:42 grows in size until it's a giant, pounding, dense onslaught @1:01, suggesting being overrun by buffalo or having the 101st Airborne invade a hot tub.

Sad but hopeful New Age-ish solo piano piece appropriate for lost pets, fond memories and reminding people that hope is everywhere - along with stupid people, ninjas and people who think cologne is a substitute for personal hygiene. Atmospheric, waterdrop-like piano starts very slow, ambient and serene, but varies in tenor and mood, getting cascading and pretty @2:03 and 2:44. A simple, echoing section @3:20 gives the impression of isolation and loneliness.

Theme from Fox's show When String Players Attack. Tense, suspenseful, fast, percussive chamber strings, found percussion and piano create a seemingly complicated, intelligent web of activity that gets slightly busier and more pissed off as it nears a climax @:29. Call/answer strings vs hits @:32 build back to a driving, almost positive section @:53 with atmospheric hits and synth pads, leading to a hit-filled ending @1:16. Waging war? Championship boxing match? Neighbor leave dog poop on your lawn again - and doesn't even have a dog? This percussion-heavy in-your-face aggressive, gritty and cinematic Industrial Rock cut uses an unrelenting mid-tempo battery of acoustic/electronic drums and grinding synth bass to provide a moving undercurrent for blaring, intimidating brass/synths that build in tenor and size until it climaxes @:29 and at the end. A bed of marching-like percussion and simple climbing synths begin @:31, suggesting tension and suspense, returning to the main, threatening mix @1:06. Smaller, pared-down version. Pretty and calm with only voices, acoustic guitar and piano. @1:58 a simple synth/chiming electric guitar melody starts, building until 2:26 when drums, more guitars and driving electric bass enter and the cut is full-on happy, bouncy Indie Rock.

Attitude + dignified pride. This slow-to-mid-tempoed, measured Indie Rock cut/power ballad works for important events, personal achievements and human triumph - or even inhuman triumph if you're a tree, because I'm not racist. Electric guitar/bass create a staccato melody against large, authoritative drums that gets larger and more full-sounding @:14, with synth pads creating a powerfully inspirational and positive wave of glory. A reflective break @:28 with pulsing synths, delayed, bell-like synths and pads provide a floaty, softer version of positivity. The guitar-driven melody returns @:57 and the full mix @1:13 - made even more uplifting by "ahh"ing vocals @1:28.

Dignified and aggressive - like an all-ballerina SWAT team. An intelligent way of suggesting time passing or simple neutral/positive suspense. Anticipatory and measured, this mid-tempo track starts with a simple marimba progression and percussion (shakers/metallics). As it progressively adds wind, string and piano arpeggios on top, the cut becomes a large, complex web of clockwork-like interwoven elements and rhythms. This bombastic cut, based on Rossini's opera "Barber of Seville", is a mix of suspenseful and frenzied comic activity, appropriate for comedies, cartoon mischief and anvil attacks (which aren't funny, but neither was Bugs Bunny after he sobered up). This cut develops in three Acts. ACT ONE, opening with the signature pulsing strings and winds, the cut suggests mischief or something dangerous approaching. @:13 conflict arrives, made obvious by a call/response between blaring brass and frantic winds/xylophone with lots of big drums and low, Batman-like hits. ACT TWO: @:52 we take a lovely stroll down the street, accompanied by light strings and glockenspiel/xylophone melody. This section is good for suggesting stereotypical Norman Rockwell-like normalcy. ACT THREE: @1:22 the tempo increases and the cut becomes a frenetic, lighthearted comic chase, with a hit-filled triumphant ending.

The Spy Who Ate Me. Spy/Action music with a wink for overweight agents, unsubtle assassinations and ejector seat mishaps. Aggessive Heavy Rock guitars start the cut with stabs growing and building in intensity until :14 when we add drums and orchestral bombast, with a hit-filled crescendo of action and exhausted brass players. The second half settles into a bed of mild espionage-like activity with revolving string pads and a four-on-the-floor kick that grows into an overwhelmingly large, tonally climbing orchestral build @1:02.

The anguish of waiting. The emotional equivalent of getting a phone message from your crying gynecologist that says "call me immediately," this dark, tense cut ratchets subtle tension into dangerous/sinister tension quickly. Starting simply with slow, simple acoustic/electronic drums, delayed shifting synth pads and low synth bass, the piece builds in tenor and foreboding @:08 until you feel like you're being stalked, hunted or the Hare Krishnas think you're interested in learning more. A ticking, suspenseful, time-is-passing bed @:32 builds into a climbing, foreboding, stuttering break @:57 leading into the main theme with pounding drums and choral voices. Fast, pulsing excitement-building positive tension in two flavors. The first: staccato strings, acoustic four-on-the-floor kick and electric bass create an expectant bed. @:11 the tension blows up into the second flavor: a proud major-key Rock-tinged celebration with anthemic electric guitars, more orchestral strings and driving drums. For those who don't like change, the second half repeats the flavors, but offers longer takes and a wider array of melodic/mix variations. Good for announcing important events, sports victories, year-end reviews and slo-motion finish line crossings.

Satanic Rock. Electric guitar-driven Death Metal that features the requisite smashing acoustic drums, chugging guitars/bass and screaming guitar leads - but also adds atmospheric human wails (@:21, :46 and 1:18) adding a demonic, evil element.
