5 Music libraries or companies that generate most of my tv and film placements. Definitely something producers (composers) & songwriters should look into (if you haven't already). Some of these libraries cost (I mention the ones that do), but most are free to join. It takes some time to reap the benefits (not an overnight cash machine). http://diymusicbiz.com

In this lesson for beginners, I will teach you how to write your first song. Learning to write music also known as music composition is a good skill to have, even as a singer or instrumentalist. I find that knowing how to play piano is the most useful since it is easy to visualize the chords and melody. After the lesson, you should check out these videos which will help you better understand chord progressions and key signatures. Get the notes and relevant videos for this lesson: https://www.pianolessonsontheweb.com/firstsong.html Before we write our song, we will review some important topics such as melody, harmony, chords, chord progressions, and some of the basic rules of writing music. There is obviously a lot more to writing music than what is covered in the lesson, but this is a great first lesson for those who have limited experience with composition. Remember that a melody is read from left to right (the part of the song you recognize and hum to yourself), and harmony is the supporting chords and is read up and down. A scale tells you all of the notes that exist in a key. You can build chords on each note of the scale, so you have 7 unique chords just like you have 7 unique notes in a scale. The combination of chords you use is known as a chord progression. One of the most common chords progressions when making a song is I, IV , V, I. Download Your Free Composing for Film, TV & Games Handbook Now: https://berkonl.in/2EpZPLz Earn Your Composing for Film, TV & Games Degree Online with Berklee: https://berkonl.in/2BYCZJ5 In this video, Berklee Online course author Ben Newhouse discusses six orchestration tips for composers. Among these tips, Newhouse says moving material around the orchestra is a great way to read the strengths of the orchestra. This creates variation and tone color in the music, which gives it forward momentum and direction. Newhouse also suggests varying the overall instrumentation, studying scores, and creating multiple orchestrations of a single musical passage. And never be afraid to ask musicians about their instruments! They are enthusiastic about their instruments and will most likely want to talk about them. ABOUT BEN NEWHOUSE: Ben Newhouse's commercial music has been used in more than 3,000 episodes of television, including projects for ABC, CBS, NBC, and most major cable networks. Newhouse's music is the soundtrack for the Disney DVD logo, several independent films, and Las Vegas stage shows. Newhouse was awarded the BMI Pete Carpenter Fellowship in 1999. The University Continuing Education Association awarded his Berklee Online Orchestration 1 course "Best New Online Course" in 2009, and Berklee awarded Newhouse a "Distinguished Faculty Award" in 2015. Download Your Free Composing for Film, TV & Games Handbook Now: https://berkonl.in/2EpZPLz Earn Your Composing for Film, TV & Games Degree Online with Berklee: https://berkonl.in/2BYCZJ5 In this video, Ben Newhouse identifies and elaborates on seven business tips for composers. The first is to identify your target client, which basically means that you need to find the type of client who would be interested in your service. The second tip is to identify your product and service and then work with the client and their presented budget. Tip number three is to circulate, which means spending time with your target client and also going to events where you can meet more prospective clients. Another tip is asking, “what music do you need for your next project?” This helps you identify a prospective client and it shifts the conversation to the most useful information for you as the composer! Tip number 5 is to get credit for the work you are doing: this is pretty self-explanatory! Tip number 6 is “make it once, sell it multiple times.” This can help you earn more money (and more exposure) because you can make one piece of music and then license it and multiple clients can use it in multiple projects. Tip number 7 is to keep your costs low. This makes sense because royalty payments can take a long time to show up for a completed project, and the industry is unpredictable. WHAT YOU DO: A composer for film or television writes each part for the pieces of music that make up a film or TV show's score, creating music that communicates the settings, actions, and emotions of different scenes. EDUCATION: A college degree - MFA is best - in music is almost always a must-have for a film or TV composer. In a music degree program you'll study music theory, composition, and performance, plus learn about conducting, scoring, music history, recording, composition software, and music business. USEFUL SKILLS: Patience, musical talent, creativity. Composers have to be able to imagine what music will complement a movie and then work out how to create it. HOW TO GET IN: After learning to play as many instruments as you can and studying music theory and composition, train under a professional composer. CAREER PATH: Spend time as an apprentice to get some experience and develop music performing and writing skills with the help of a mentor. From here you might become a copyist, arranger, or orchestrator, before finding success as a composer. PAYBACK: Median annual salary: $47,410. DOWNSIDES: Long hours spent practicing and writing. FUTURE OF JOB: The number of jobs is expected to increase 10-19% in the 2013-2023 decade, which is average. NETWORKING: The Society of Composers and Lyricists offers an apprenticeship program: http://www.thescl.com/ Video produced by students at LACES (Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies) working with Gigniks' career media program. Download Your Free Copyright Guide: https://berkonl.in/2mbtpcd In this video, Berklee Online course author E. Michael Harrington explains the difference between composition copyright and sound recording copyright. The composition goes from being what was in your head to being actual music, recorded by a band or orchestra. There’s a copyright for both the composition and how the overall sound is arranged. A song will always have two copyrights. You will get paid royalties for every use of a recording: vinyl, digital, etc. Dr. Harrington details some of the unusual specifics: If another artist covers your song and posts it online, theoretically the composer and record label will all get paid. If it’s played on FM radio, only the composer gets paid. About E. Michael Harrington: Dr. E. Michael Harrington is a professor in music copyright and intellectual property matters. He has lectured at many law schools, organizations, and music conferences throughout North America, including Harvard Law, George Washington University Law, Hollywood Bar Association, Texas Bar, Minnesota Bar, Houston Law Center, Brooklyn Law, BC Law, Loyola Law, NYU, McGill, Eastman, Emory, the Experience Music Project, Future of Music Coalition, Pop Montreal, and others. He has worked as a consultant and expert witness in hundreds of music copyright matters including efforts to return "We Shall Overcome" and "This Land Is Your Land" to the public domain, and has worked with director Steven Spielberg, producer Mark Burnett, the Dixie Chicks, Steve Perry, Busta Rhymes, Samsung, Keith Urban, HBO, T-Pain, T. I., Snoop Dogg, Collin Raye, Tupac Shakur, Lady Gaga, George Clinton, Mariah Carey, and others. He sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Popular Culture, advisory board of the Future of Music Coalition and the Creators Freedom Project, and is a member of Leadership Music. Michael has been interviewed by the New York Times, CNN, Bloomberg Law, Wall Street Journal, Time, Huffington Post, Billboard, USA Today, Rolling Stone, Money Magazine, Investor's Business Daily, People Magazine, Life Magazine, and Washington Post, in addition to BRAVO, PBS, ABC News, NBC's "Today Show," the Biography Channel, NPR, CBC and others. He teaches Music Business Capstone and Music Licensing courses at Berklee Online, and is the course author and instructor for Music Business Law, part of the curriculum for Berklee Online’s Master of Art in Music Business degree.
